Essential Functions + Assists other crafts on shutdowns involving heating and cooling, and power supply for refrigerated system.

  • Does chemical treatment of water on the heating and cooling loop to prevent corrosion and scale formation. Makes necessary test to determine quality of water in the system.

  • Does preventive maintenance work on HVAC equipment in accordance with the correct procedures and recommends changes in existing equipment and conditions for better operating efficiency.

  • Installs new air conditioning units and systems, connecting the systems to required services and testing for proper operation.

  • Installs, calibrates, and maintains manual, automatic pneumatic and electronic controls on all HVAC equipment. Obtains assistance when necessary on complicated electronics or pneumatic controls.

Duties As an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic


, your duties may include the following: * Makes minor repairs and replaces major portions of refrigeration systems.

  • Maintains and repairs cooling towers, condensing units, air washing units, air handing units, heat wheels and filtering systems.

  • Document work performed through a work order process.

  • Installs, repairs and maintains piping, valves and fittings in systems by welding, brazing, soldering and flaring.

  • Perform testing and balancing of both air and hot/chilled water flow systems.

  • Plan, coordinate, and schedule equipment shutdown for prescribed tasks.

  • Required to drive vehicles up to 1-ton service trucks, operate aerial elevating platform vehicles and to have local drivers license.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 11 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is Ability to do the job of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision.

Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc. (Includes blueprinting). 4. Knowledge of materials 5. Troubleshooting.

Probationary Period: This position requires completion of an initial one (1) - year probationary period, if not already served. PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: The mechanic may be required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, under buildings, small, tight places, manholes, and where the systems and equipment are in hard to reach places.

This requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods. He frequently handles, lifts, carries and sets up parts with excessive weights. He/She must be able to maintain intense concentration for longer periods of time.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is done in all areas of the facilities throughout the organization inside and outside, and is subject to dirty, dusty and greasy conditions.

The mechanic is sometimes required to make installations and repairs in bad smelling, damp, cold and hot places. He is frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns and infections. Various protective devices such as hart hats, gloves, safety shoes, and glasses are used.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: Proficiency in the English language is required for direct patient care positions. (P.L. 95-201). DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE: The VA has established a Drug-Free Federal Workplace Policy.
