JOB SUMMARY: Works under the direction and supervision of a licensed physical therapist to aid in the total rehabilitation of the patient via use of various modalities, therapeutic exercise, gait training, and functional activities. Treats and cares for patients of all ages.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: *Performs a physical therapy treatment program developed by the physical therapist and progresses the patient through the program in a safe and competent manner. *Prepares patient for treatment by explaining the treatment process and positioning the patient for comfort, safety, and optimal response to the treatment. *Administers various treatment modalities in a safe and appropriate manner including: cervical and lumber traction, cryotherapy (i.e. cold packs, ice massage, and ice application), electrotherapy (i.e. electrical stimulation, TENS, and neuroprobe), fluidotherapy, heat therapy (i.e. hot packs, infra-red, ultra-violet, and paraffin), hydrotherapy, intermittent compression, therapeutic massage, ultrasound, shortwave and microwave diathermy. *Utilizes appropriate active and passive therapeutic exercise programs and equipment safely and effectively such as range of motion, strengthening, stretching, and isokinetic training. *Performs gait training, transfer training, and other functional activities in a safe and effective manner. *Performs selected measurement procedures consistently and accurately such as joint range of motion, gross strength of muscle groups, length and girth of body parts, Jobst garments, and vital signs. *Fits patients for and adjusts assistive devices such as canes, walkers, crutches, and wheelchairs appropriate to the patient's diagnosis. *Instructs and trains the patient in the proper use and care of orthoses, prostheses, and assistive devices. *Modifies treatment procedures as indicated by patient response to treatment within the limits specified in the treatment plan and discusses treatment changes with the supervising physical therapist. *Provides instruction to patient and/or family specific to the patient's needs and individual treatment program. *Keeps the physical therapist aware of patient's status and any problems that may arise. *Performs discharge planning activities in a timely and effective manner as a member of the rehab team and as directed by the physical therapist. *Provides for patient equipment needs when applicable. *Instructs patient and/or family in home exercise programs, safe performance of mobility skills, and the safe use/operation of equipment as indicated. *Performs all documentation responsibilities pertinent to patient care legibly and in compliance with departmental policy. *Supervises affiliating Physical Therapist Assistant students enrolled in APTA approved curriculums and gives instructions to Physical Therapy Aides. *Interprets and follow policies and guidelines to define procedures and meet goals/deadlines. *Performs other duties as required or assigned by emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform. *Denotes essential job duties

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Graduate of an American Physical Therapy Association approved curriculum with an AS in a Physical Therapy Assistant Program required. Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the state board of Physical Therapy for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Experience treating patients of all ages for most orthopedic and neurological diagnoses preferred. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Performs medium daily work with sporadic heavy lifting, as this is a direct patient care position.
Must be able to climb (especially stairs and ramps) and guard/assist patients while climbing stairs/ramps. Other physical abilities that are imperative include balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, fingering, talking, and hearing. Must have good depth perception to adequately perform the described.
Must be able to work indoors and outdoors, in patients rooms, therapy gyms, occasionally in patients home, and in the community. Must be able to work with electrical equipment such as modality equipment. May be exposed to environmental hazards, infectious diseases, chemical agents (see MSDS), sharp objects, fluctuating noise levels, disagreeable odors, frequent interruptions, and agitated or emotionally distraught patients and families.
