The SCAN Program is looking for an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) to in its Hartford, CT location.

The Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Program (SCAN) at Connecticut Children's Medical Center is a clinical service that provides medical and psychosocial consultation regarding children/youth with suspected abuse or neglect. Both inpatient and outpatient consultations are provided at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. SCAN staff participates in the hospital Child Protection Team and regional community multidisciplinary teams. SCAN staff also provides education professionals from multiple disciplines and participates in research, quality improvement, and prevention activities.

The mission of the SCAN Program

The SCAN Program provides comprehensive expert medical evaluation and psychosocial assessment to children who may have experienced maltreatment. Program staff offer support to caregivers throughout the evaluation process. We seek to collaborate with multidisciplinary partners in the service of the child and family and strive to improve community response to child maltreatment through education, research, prevention and advocacy.

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner (APRN) is accountable for delivering comprehensive quality patient care, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions according to standards of practice to children from birth through adolescence. The practice context is a specialized, multi-disciplinary suspected child abuse evaluation team. Primary site of clinical practice is at CT Children's Medical Center as part of the SCAN (suspected child abuse and neglect) team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities:

  • Performs medical evaluations and recommends management on children and adolescents who are affected by suspected child abuse or neglect. This may include suspected physical abuse, emotional abuse, medical child abuse, sexual abuse, and/or neglect.

  • Provides inpatient and outpatient consultation for patients at CT Children's Medical Center with suspected abuse or neglect.

  • Performs comprehensive genital evaluations with colposcopy or similar documentation including testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.

  • Answers and returns telephone calls to patient families, physicians, and other providers or agencies. May provide phone guidance on management and triage of patients with suspected maltreatment.

  • Performs case reviews/record reviews on cases referred to the SCAN Program.

  • Provides testimony regarding child abuse cases as requested by courts and other official entities.

Community Resource Development and Collaboration:

  • Participates in training and education of students, residents, and other health care providers involved in evaluating children and adolescents affected by suspected child abuse.

  • Participates in multidisciplinary evaluations, management and team discussions of child abuse cases.

  • Consults with attending and/or referring physicians to decide patient triage to child abuse team

  • Participates in on-call coverage

  • Incorporates preventive health care through patient and family education and child health advocacy.

  • Provides professional support to regional health care providers who are involved with the evaluation and treatment of child abuse and neglect cases.

  • Provides clinical training about child abuse and neglect both in house and within the community.

  • Works to establish best practices regarding child abuse medical evaluation and treatment in the region.

Program Development:

  • Participates in special programs and services as assigned.

  • Participates in research activities.

  • Participates in regular case review and quality assurance activities regarding medical evaluations in the program.

  • Participates in peer review.

  • Works on compliance of parent organizations regarding child abuse standards and regulations.

Additional Skills Required:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the population-specific differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families and co-workers.
