General Job Description:
Removes asbestos containing materials (ACM) from, but not limited to, boilers, pipes, tanks, vessels, exchangers, columns, floor tiles and proofing; Must have completed a certified asbestos removal class and have current certificate and a current state card from the division of air quality.
Covers, boilers, pipes, tanks and refrigeration units with insulating materials, such as fiberglass, cork, plastic and magnesia to reduce loss or absorption of heat, prevent moisture condensation and to deaden sound.
Removes asbestos from ceilings, walls, beams, boilers, and other structures, following company operating procedures; Assembles scaffolding and seals off work area; Positions mobile decontamination unit or portable showers at entrance of work area; Positions portable air evacuation and filtration system inside work area; Sprays chemical solution over asbestos covered surfaces, using tank with attached hose and nozzle, to soften asbestos; Cuts and scrapes asbestos from surfaces, using knife and scraper; Shovels asbestos into disposal container; Cleans work area of loose asbestos, using vacuum, broom, and dust pan and into disposal bags and seals bags, using duct tape; Dismantles scaffolding and temporary walkway, using hand tools, and places plastic sheeting and disposal bags into transport bags.

Our client is seeking a State of California Certified Asbestos Consultant and Certified Lead Inspector/Assessor to join our team at NASA Ames Research Center. The company supports the Safety, Environmental, and Medical Support Services (SEMSS) program at NASA Ames. The lead & asbestos program specialist will be responsible for managing the company's lead and asbestos task order under the SEMSS program. The essential functions of this position are to:
Provide all employees with annual asbestos awareness notification required by AB 3713 Connelly Act.
Provide and maintain required warning signs on buildings containing asbestos or lead.
Conduct facility audits and provide specific corrective action recommendations and follow-up.
Provide support to close internal and external audit lead/asbestos findings.
Develop, implement, and maintain asbestos and lead databases to document projects completed, known locations of these materials in buildings, and to make this information available to workers.
Provide asbestos and lead work oversight and report on controls on disturbance of asbestos and lead.
Review all new projects and existing facilities for asbestos and lead concerns, recommend appropriate controls, and advise NASA management and/or program management for resolution.
Ensure that all asbestos and lead work is conducted with appropriately trained and certified personnel.
Ensure regulators are provided with all notifications of planned work, as specifically required by regulation.
Conduct worksite inspections daily for all asbestos and lead work.
Collect assays and samples of suspect hazardous building materials, obtain laboratory analysis, interpret results and provide a survey report for project controls.
- 4+ years of progressively responsible experience working in hazardous building materials consulting and/or a facility Environmental Health & Safety program with an emphasis on asbestos and lead management.
- Must be proficient in the use of instrumentation including: XRF instruments, asbestos and lead sampling techniques, and air sampling equipment.
- Must be familiar with Federal and State regulations governing asbestos and lead in construction, public health, and environmental.
