General Description An Asphalt Distributor Operator is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that performs on construction projects any combination of the duties described more fully, below.

An Asphalt Distributor Operator typically performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the work flow dictates. An Asphalt Distributor Operator consists of operating an asphalt distributor by applying specialize emulsions to roadways, which are then covered by a chip spreader. The operator is responsible for setting the pace for the paving operation.

Key Duties Understand and execute paving procedures while following instructions to meet the standards of the project Commercial Driver License (CDL) A or B with N-tanker & X-hazmat endorsement as well as an acceptable driving record Drives and operates distributor truck equipped with tank to spray asphalt emulsions on road surfaces Connects hose from storage tank to truck tank and moves lever to fill pressure tank with asphalt liquid Regulate burner to heat liquid and start auxiliary pump Snap or screw on spray bars to attain required width of spray Turn valve to regulate flow of material at specified rate and adjust levers to adjust height of spray bar from road surface Monitor flow gages, tachometer and temperature gauge to insure uniform distribution Perform daily safety checks of fluid levels on oil, water, fuel and inspections for leaks and damage to machine before operation Responsible for daily maintenance of equipment to remain in proper and safe working order Responsible for notifying supervisor if equipment needs to be repaired Understand and execute different emulsions Shifts may vary according to project demands Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts Qualification Requirements General.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each Key Duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  Physical Demands.  The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an Asphalt Distributor Operator to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Constant physical effort, including standing and sitting is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day.

  Employee must be able to stand and sit for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Key Duties. Frequently walk and climb on uneven surfaces of heavy equipment. Ability to lift, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds and carry at least 30 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistance.

Manual dexterity to operate hand tools. Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the road construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment. The Operator must be able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.

Work Environment.  The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that an Asphalt Distributor Operator encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.

Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, and dust that is typically associated with road construction.  Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery. Asphalt Distributor Operator

The Asphalt Distributor Operator reports to the Job Foreman to receive daily instructions. The Asphalt Distributor Operator can expect to fill any Truck Drivers position (Support Truck, Tanker Truck, Low Boy, box truck or any truck for which they are qualified). He may also be assigned to any and all other duties that would support the crew and that he or she may be qualified to perform.

Job Functions

  • Transport and drive equipment to and from job sites in a safe and timely manner
  • Assist, load and supervise loading of truck in order to ensure proper order and weight distribution, assure safety of the cargo, equipment, and limit danger to people.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records such as, spray logs, daily logs, fuel logs, fuel receipts, delivery documentation
  • Operate spray rig to apply liquid asphalt as per job specifications
  • Obtain shipping documents and necessary signatures and return said documents to appropriate department as required
  • Inspect, monitor all gauges and equipment, provide and document proper routine maintenance of trucks/equipment in accordance with established policies; reporting concerns or problems immediately
  • Operate trucks and equipment in accordance with all DOT regulations and observe all safety regulations established by Pavement Maintenance Systems, LLC and the DMV for the safe operation of commercial vehicles
  • Maintain assigned vehicles and/or equipment to a high standard of cleanliness
  • Assist in training others to operate assigned trucks/equipment
  • Other duties as assigned by the Foreman and/or Supervisor

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must demonstrate strong teamwork skills
  • Strong basic Math skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written communication) with management, staff and outside entities as well as follow verbal and written instructions in English
  • Ability to read, follow and interpret safety documents, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Safety consciousness
  • Knowledge of construction principles, techniques and procedures strongly preferred

Experience, Education and Other Requirements

  • Previous Asphalt Distributor experience required
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work overtime, when needed
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • CDL w/ Tanker endorsement or ability to obtain one within specified time after being hired preferred

Perform support functions for Tendering Engineers including: + Buyout Request for Quotations, Est. RFEs, Budget STARS & LPS requests, Final Proposal Assembly support + Assist the AE's with pump outline drawings and other related data to support the bid requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS: + Someone going into their junior or senior year with an engineering degree, preferably mechanical or chemical.

  • Sound computer skills required. Will use Word, Excel, Power Point, AutoCAD and other industry software.

POSITION PROFILE This position is responsible for visually inspecting all raw and finished product, loaded and unloaded, on the finishing systems against established quality criteria. This is a first shift position

Required Skills

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: + High school diploma or equivalent required

TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE: + Will be required to cross train on critical finish department positions for coverage purposes + Must be able to work in a team environment and be part of the rotation of all the load and unload positions + Must pass color test + May be required to receive additional education and attend seminars for related training

INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE: + Experience in a manufacturing environment required + Working knowledge of lean manufacturing techniques, principles, and tools preferred

Required Experience

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: + Visually inspect all raw and finished product, loaded and unloaded, on the finishing systems against established quality criteria + Load and unload paint system according to paint schedules + Use designated equipment to check finished quality of painted parts against established quality criteria + Maintain accurate records of product loaded, unloaded and rejected from the paint system + Unload and present product in a manner acceptable to the trim areas + Read and understand part tags and catalog numbers + Clean and maintain load and unload areas + Transport stock to and from work area + Perform all duties within established ISO and safety policies and procedures + Performs all 5S housekeeping tasks in appropriate areas. Works to ensure work area is maintained in a clean, orderly and safe condition at all times + Participates as a member of the Finishing Team
