The Process Control & Combustion Engineer will report to the Group Engineering Manager Titanium Segment and will be responsible for the design, development, execution, and data analysis of all furnace temperature uniformity surveys, system accuracy tests, and gas analysis at the ATEP Niles location. The process control & combustion engineer will provide direct supervision to the process control technician responsible for coordinating furnace testing & results as well as provide technical guidance to the electricians performing the testing. This position will provide technical leadership in the adherence to all heat treat specifications and NADCAP requirements and be an engineering liaison to the Quality department. This position will provide process control & engineering leadership of data acquisition and analysis of various operating equipment throughout the Niles facility, concentrating on heat treat processes and other equipment used in the production of titanium mill products. This position will also be responsible as the Single Point of Authority for Combustion Safety for all furnaces, boilers, and air heaters in the ATEP Niles & Canton facilities. A broad knowledge of engineering principles, practices, and procedures will be applied to process improvement initiatives focused on heat treatment of titanium mill products and other processes across the titanium manufacturing landscape.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Provide engineering leadership in support of heat treat process compliance; lead process control improvement & automation initiatives for heat treat processes as well as other metal manufacturing process throughout the facility;
Provide direct support to operations & maintenance to diagnose/troubleshoot controls system hardware/software & equipment problems and integration issues, and develop & coach resources to address existing needs and ongoing growth requirements;
Provide technical leadership in the development of new process control & automation (PC&A) strategies in support of business unit goals. Establish and ensure appropriate process control standards and specifications are being met;
Serve as the Single Point of Authority for Combustion Safety for all furnaces, boilers, and air heaters with a gross energy input greater than or equal to 150,000 BYU per hour, in the ATEP Niles & Canton facilities;
Ensure appropriate interface and migration of corporate IT functionality relative to PC&A, as well as network, security, and back up requirements are satisfied;
Provide leadership in the migration of outsourced service activity to internal control of PC&A functions while positioning internal capabilities to support business growth;
Provide engineering expertise, guidance, and direction in the functional design and implementation of process control improvements and OEE initiatives;

You will spend the first few months of your career with us at our World Headquarters in Perrysburg, OH, undergoing extensive training within our state of the art Innovation Center under the direction of the R&D pilot team. JOB SUMMARY Position is accountable for the operations and learnings of an experimental pilot furnace in collaboration with R&D staff. Given the novel and experimental nature of the furnace, the role has primary responsibility in safety using this technology to produce high quality glass in initial process development trials and for later container manufacturing experiments and commercial ware production. Relieves other department supervisors as required.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES (All other duties as assigned)
Checks regularly all furnace operating conditions and ensures safe operation of the furnace system, including glass conditioning system.
Analyze data and takes corrective action or makes recommendations to supervisor as to further action required.
Responsible for start-up and shutdown safety checkoff lists.
Maintains furnace safety improvement program.
Executes furnace experiments as required
Directs maintenance of various electric motors, gear reduction equipment, environmental control systems, water jackets, batch screw, feeders, etc. Take appropriate correction action.
Checks regularly the furnace melting quality. Takes bottle samples and, as required, sends to R&D and Engineering for analysis. Receives instructions from Glass Engineering relative to adjustments in batch, temperatures, etc. Also takes a daily bottle sample from each furnace, checks light transmission quality against customer standards and advises supervisor to adjust coloring.
Prepares regular and special reports, charts, and tables relative to furnace operations. Includes daily furnace load report, which is used to establish load limits designed to properly balance maximum pull and maximum furnace life. Sets limits in conjunction with supervisor.
Responsible for assisting in department preventative maintenance and safety programs. Makes regular inspections; receives notice of problems from other department personnel; issues necessary work orders; follows up to insure completion.
Consults with supervisor, advises and makes recommendations to supervisor concerning methods, procedures, personnel and equipment.
Directs activities and conducts training of the furnace tenders and the hot repair crew.
Communicates and directs the application of prescribed safety and environmental regulations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in Ceramic, Chemical, Materials Science or related Engineering field preferred + 1-5 years of experience in the Batch & Furnace area of a glass manufacturing facility or related field
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS This position reports to the Batch and Furnace Manager. Position will be under direct supervision of R&D Pilot Team Lead throughout initial development/trialing and commercialization of the new furnace.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS There will be travel associated with this position for training and/or project work. First 3-6 months will
require extended stays at the company’s Innovation Center, located in Perrysburg, OH.Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations. HANDS ON ENGINEER
Working in a multi-disciplinary team, responsible for designing and developing
components and complete assemblies related to the Appliance and HVAC industry.
Including some experience with injection molded parts, Sheet metal, and cast components.
