JOB TITLE: Assignment Editor
DEPARTMENT: News
REPORTS TO: News Director/Assignment Manager
Responsibilities
Plans, prepares, and executes the station's newsgathering functions, including both scheduled newsworthy events as well as 'spot' news and breaking stories. Helps decide and determine daily story assignments then dispatches reporters and photographers in the field.
Directs and coordinates efforts to get these stories on the air. Assists reporters with researching, developing and setting up their stories. Assists writers, producers and web staff with gathering information and updating stories.
Responsible for arranging and supervising video feeds. Scrutinizes a multitude of local resources, media and contacts for potential stories. Effectively monitors local law enforcement and public safety agencies for breaking stories.
Qualifications
College degree with several years of major market experience, preferably local. Must be decisive, forward thinking and possess excellent news judgment.
Strong organizational skills required. Should have a working knowledge of the issues, lifestyles and culture that are unique to the southern California news market. Candidates also need strong logistical skills and the ability to effectively navigate the local landscape.
Familiarity with local government, municipalities and jurisdictions is essential. Ability to effectively monitor local law enforcement agencies for breaking news is imperative. Must be able to work under pressure in a sometimes stressful work environment. Must be capable of interacting positively and productively with other employees.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Respond quickly and efficiently to breaking news; coordinate multiple live field crews and the chopper
Set up news stories by planning daily and long term coverage
Monitor websites, social media sources and post content to news website
Monitor police and fire scanners for breaking news and developing stories
Collaborate with editors to determine which news events should be covered and which correspondent should cover each event
Communicate the coverage needs of the assignment desk to crews; dispatch and coordinate photographers and field crews
Develop sources within the community, including government agencies and public relations representatives
Make beat calls to sources and other agencies
Gather accurate information from the public and public agencies
Maintain current and future files for news stories
Contribute to story ideas and advance developing stories; participate in directing coverage plans under deadline pressure
Perform other duties as assigned

THE PIX11 Assignment Editor must coordinate the gathering of news, generate story ideas, the scheduling and assignment of daily coverage, and the delivery of news material to reporters photographers and Tribune media partners.
Work with news management, producers and reporters to plan well-rounded news coverage.
Maintain extensive working files of possible stories, background information and cultivate news sources, including multiple digital platforms.
Gather information about news as it develops and communicate it effectively and accurately to the production team. Collaborate with managers and producers to select stories for coverage and to keep them up to date.
Schedule and order facilities including satellite time. Assign and coordinate the distribution of newsgathering equipment.
Work accurately under pressure. Dispatch news crews, maintain schedule logs, deal with telephone story tips, listen to police radios, read newswires and e-mail, monitor social media and stay in contact with sources in order to stay up to date with breaking news. Take an active role in planning next day coverage .

Qualifications
Associates or Bachelor's degree in Journalism or Communications preferred.
3-5 years broadcast journalism experience with 1 year minimum as an assignment editor
Must have a commitment to journalistic standards of ethics and accuracy.
Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with general knowledge and interest in local, national and world news, including knowledge of the New York Tri-state area.
Basic computer knowledge/word processing skills are preferred. Working knowledge of data mining and social media platforms.
Must have the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, overnights, weekends and holidays.

DESCRIPTION:
CBS WFOR-TV in Miami has an opening for an Assignment Editor flexible to work all shifts, the weekend and holidays who can determine news assignments as supervised by the Managing Editor; Monitor law enforcement frequencies and fire frequencies on newsroom scanners for spot news; Telephone law enforcement and fire fighting agencies to learn if spot news must be assigned; check wires for on air bulletins or special reports and new story assignments; prepare a situationer describing in detail what stories are being covered, who is covering them, and approximately how much air time is required for each story; gather information by telephone on news stories which are not assigned to reporters; participate in story meetings to inform participants of events being covered; schedule remote trucks (ENG/SNG) for live news stories or interviews; develop contacts in community and cultivate those contacts for news stories; perform other duties which may be assigned from time to time bases upon events of the day.
