Travel: Yes, 10 % of the Time Northrop Grumman is seeking candidates for an experimental atomic physicist position in the Advanced Position, Navigation, and Timing Systems Group, located in Woodland Hills, CA. The physicist will join an active research and development group focused on applications in atomic and quantum sensing of geophysical phenomena. Sensors of interest include accelerometers, clocks, electrometers, gravity gradiometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers. The physicist will collaborate on current sensor development projects and help develop new concepts and approaches for future investigations. They will work closely with a team of engineers and technicians and coordinate their efforts to insure that the system design and implementation is appropriate for the physics of the system. The physicist will be expected to work on efforts ranging in maturity from fundamental basic research, often coordinating with a university research group, and proof of principle demonstrations through to middle and late stage research and development, and support transition to production. The physicist must work well in a team and be able to fill the principal investigator role on both internal and contract funded research efforts. They must have strong public speaking skill and be able to communicate complex technical information to both subject matter experts and laymen. They must also be prepared to train and mentor other team members in the specific technical details of new and inventive sensing systems, and translate developing sensor physics into meaningful specifications and requirements for the mechanical, electrical, and systems designs. The physicist will also attend and actively support scientific and technical conferences, symposia, workshops, working team meetings and other venues for presentations of results and development of collaborative research relationships and business development. Responsibilities include:

Team development and mentoring + Collaboration and support on related as well as outside of expertise projects + Lead both internal and contract research and development efforts + Present research and results to customers and the scientific community through conferences and journal publications.
The successful applicant shall have a demonstrated track record of innovation and accomplishment in atomic/quantum system and/or sensor development.
Ph.D. in Physics or equivalent technical field with a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience, or a M.S. in Physics or equivalent field with a minimum of 12 including substantial experience in sensor development + Knowledge of atomic sensing principles + Excellent written and oral communication skills Self-motivated, capable of working independently and leading a team.
Experience working Government-funded R&D programs + Proficiency with Mathematica, LabView, C/C , MATLAB/Simulink, VHDL + Knowledge of principles of navigation, including inertial navigation and aided navigation.
Experience with atomic clocks, magnetometers, gyroscopes, and/or accelerometers.
Experience with spin polarized atomic systems and vapor cell based sensor physics.
Experience with cold/ultra-cold (BEC) systems and atom interferometry based measurements and sensors.

Microsemi Frequency & Time Division (FTD) provides world-class timing products. The business unit located in Beverly is the world leader in commercial atomic clocks including Rb oscillators, Cs beam clocks, chip-scale atomic clocks (CSACs), and active hydrogen masers. The Research team consists of a small group of technically-skilled atomic physicists and engineers. The principal responsibility of the group is the development of next-generation atomic clock technology for eventual commercial use. Recent accomplishments resulted in the first commercial atomic clock based on the principle of coherent population trapping and the world's first commercially available chip-scale atomic clock. Microsemi is seeking an Experimental Atomic Physicist at Microsemi-FTD's facility based in Beverly, MA. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, hands-on experimentalist with a diverse range of technical skills, an intuitive understanding of atomic physics, and the ability to combine these into new and innovative technologies. The successful candidate may be a recent Ph.D. graduate (but several years of postdoctoral or commercial experience are preferred) and will join a small multi-disciplinary team investigating trapped-ion clocks as well as CPT clocks. In addition to R&D projects, the successful candidate will provide support for existing atomic clock products including cesium beam frequency standards, rubidium oscillators, and CSAC. Mechanics in this position perform various procedures to accomplish fuselage and wing joining. Assemble and install parts, structural components and sub-assemblies to build and attach major wing assemblies.
Assemble, install, connect and rework plumbing and electrical components and systems. Preform continuity checks on wire bundles and electrical components. Work is performed on composite / metal aircraft with occasional sealing.
Exposure to aluminum, titanium, steel, magnesium, exotic alloys, plastics, composites and hazardous materials. This position will require working in confined spaces of the wing fuel cells for extended periods. Employees crawl through an opening 17.75" X 10.00" in order to get inside the fuel cell.
Employment in this position also requires, standing, reaching, turning, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, crawling, pushing/pulling, working with sealants, paints and other hazardous materials and the use of personal safety gear for face, eyes, hand and ears. Locate work area using drawings which specifies airplane number, section number, and three-point location.
Set up assembly tools per tooling instructions or drawing. Locate tools and/or parts on airplane using tooling holes, pilot holes, K holes, or by hand, per drawing or tooling instructions. Align parts and secure in place using Clecos or tooling/hand clamps.
Check for good edge margins and alignment. Shim and/or trim parts as required. Drill pilot holes using drill motor and proper size drill bit(s). Drill, ream, countersink full size holes in parts/assemblies, in proper sequence and to correct size using drill motor.
Disassemble parts and deburr holes using chip chasers, deburring tools, and files to prepare for installation of fasteners. Use solvents to clean surfaces prior to sealing or assembly. Apply sealant, alodine, primer, adhesives and special finishes.
Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in approved manner. Install fasteners by correct type, size and in correct sequence per drawing, using correct tools (e.g., rivet gun and bucking bar, drill motor, power screwdriver, C-squeeze, ratchet wrench, nut runner). Obtain two way radio and confined space flag, adhering to Communications System for Confined Hazardous Areas rules, per company procedures. Operate mechanical lifts of various types to locate parts/assemblies into position or to perform assembly work.
Prepare, assemble and install tubing, standoffs, valves, regulators, compressors and ducts, using fasteners per drawing. Install pre-assembled plumbing systems (e.g., hydraulic modules; smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, air, water and fuel systems), using ground straps and wires, clamps, lubricant and hand/power tools (e.g., screwdrivers, torque wrenches, nut runners). Install wire bundles and electrical components using production illustrations and wiring diagrams. Examines defective equipment to determine cause of malfunction and reports need for repairs. Assists test department with expeditious turnaround of repairs as required. Assists engineering staff to resolve design and documentation issues. Interfaces with planning personnel in the generation of process flows, as well as with quality assurance personnel.
Analyzes work orders and blueprints to determine information such as material to be used, type of operations, and sequence of operations required. Monitors usage and supply of all production materials and tooling; reorders when necessary. Interfaces with production control to help prevent material and equipment shortages.
Formulates and recommends plans, policies, procedures and schedules for the section. Seeks methods to improve product quality, repeatability and efficiency. Schedules and coordinates work assignments. Ensures accurate time charging. Inspects work in progress and finished products.
Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance and quality of product. Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of the departments.
Implements configuration changes in the product and supports field upgrades and operations.
May interface with outside vendors and sales representatives to stay current on new products and services. May interface with customers to answer questions relating to the product.
Participates in hiring, promoting, and training subordinate employees. Assigns, directs and reviews their work.
