Brewer’S Assistant – Barrel Warehouse
Goose Island Brewer's Assistant
The Brewer's Assistant is an entry level, full time position at the Barrel Warehouse. This is a perfect position for someone that may have some formal brewing education but little or no production brewing experience who is trying to gain entry into the brewing industry. The Brewer's Assistant will report directly to the Barrel Lead.
General cleaning and sanitation of the offices and working areas.
Inventory of raw materials, barrel filling and racking as well as tanker filling and emptying.
Moderate interaction with the public and other brewery guests.
May host tours of the Barrel Warehouse and must be able to speak responsibly and knowledgably about the barrel aging process.
Ability to repeatedly lift up to 40 lbs and work in wet and dry environments in a variety of temperatures.
Skillful dexterity with tri-clamp fittings.
Ability to be on your feet for 8-10 hours a day.
Proper handling of chemicals while wearing appropriate PPE is a necessary part of this job.
Learn from current Brewer I, II, III's and the Laboratory team as the situation demands.

Straightener #2 (Third Shift)
The Straightener #2 maintains set up and operates manual Arbor presses and hydraulic presses to straighten and true metal work pieces. Uses various types of presses associated with straightening such as gun barrels, weapon components, flat and round bar stock, etc.
Works to tolerances of less than .002 TIR on finished components. Follows established company directives, policies, military specifications, quality documents and manufacturing instructions.
May place workpiece on spring loaded rest supports, rotate workpiece and use dial indicators to determine amount of warpage or out-of-round of outside and/or inside diameters. Applies hydraulic or manual pressure to workpiece at appropriate points until workpiece runs true within required specifications.
May straighten components at various stages of process operations such as before and/or after gun drilling, heat treating, milling, grinding, plating, etc.
May straighten warped plates, rods, covers, cams, castings, etc. on manual arbor presses using surface plates, shims, dial indicators, gages, etc. to confirm straightness. Files, sands, and deburrs workpiece as requires to ensure accuracy of gauging requirements.
Applies knowledge of workpiece reactions to bending and pressures to expedite straightening operations and prevent damage to costly items. May straighten hardened steel workpieces such as tank track pins, which are subject to cracking if critical elastic limits are exceeded.
May use manual arbor presses and bar leverage to straighten flat metal stock. May operate other machines in additions to straightening operations.
Straightening tasks require continual lifting of heavy workpieces such as various types of gun barrels. May at times use hoisting equipment when required by process.
Practices safety and good housekeeping policies and procedures. Perform operator TPM's according to the machine's process maintenance checklist to ensure that the machine is in proper working order, and to record information as instructed.

Machine Operator/ Composite Straightener Operator
Perform various required duties to set up and operate a Roll Mill, Bruderer Straightener and accessory equipment to straighten bi-metal coil stock and locate defective welds as well as loading, unloading and operating electric vacuum annealing furnaces following standard practices and procedures.
Check coil tags and material before annealing and again before straightening to assure proper information coil identity. Using overhead electric hoist, place racks of coils into floor level annealing furnaces. Input required data into programmed controller. Operation is automatic; furnace cycles and shuts off automatically. Monitor operation by means of temperature recording chart. Unload using overhead hoist and use Between loads, check furnace for broken elements, damaged seals, insulation, etc. Observe color and brightness of annealed stock.
Load coils of annealed stock to pay off reel and thread through rolling mill then through various guides, rollers, and wipers of Bruderer Straightener, through ultrasonic and laser inspection stations to take up reel. Select proper carbide spacers, guides and rollers. Make necessary adjustments to obtain required thickness and straightness. Adjust rollers to remove coil set and obtain desired camber. Adjust ultrasonic tester to set weld zone as directed. Cut large coils in half at take up reel.
Machine operates automatically and shuts off as defects pick up on sonic tester. View defect under microscope and mark spot with hand or hydraulic punch and grit blast. Cut large defects out with metal cutters if in excess of pre-established limits and form new coil. Cut sample strip of coil stock, use indicators and straight edge to check for straightness, bow, twist, etc. Maintain required production records indicating footage processed, type and number of defects. Enter and accumulate data in computer for production records and statistical quality control.
Loosen expandable chuck, tie coil with tie wire, remove from take up reel with electric hoist, place on skid with spacers and deliver skids to storage area. Monitor automatic operation of additional lines of straightening equipment during temporary absence of other operations.
Use chopper to dispose of scrap materials. Perform regular scheduled preventative maintenance and maintain log. Change tester transducers as required and calibrate laser gauge as necessary.
Detect and report unsafe or defective equipment of materials, unusual situations to supervisor. Maintain area and equipment in a neat and orderly manner.
Observe and obey all safety rules, regulations and practices.
Perform other similar or related duties as assigned or directed by supervisor.
Demanding, fast-paced position resulting from deadline pressures, simultaneous competing demands and changing priorities. Working is a team environment.

1.GENERAL SUMMARY (What does the position do?):
Responsible for straightening, grinding, welding, and otherwise bringing parts into spec. Also uses various dimensional tools, fixtures, and ultrasonic tools to determine the specs of a part, and make appropriate determinations as to the best way to bring the part into tolerance limits. Works closely with the salvage analyst, grinding, welding, and CMM.
2.MAJOR DUTIES (List duties in order of time spent on them, with the most first):
Be accountable for working safely by following all safety rules and safe work practices.
Always consider safety before action.
Use dimensional tools (calipers, dyers, Ultrasonic, etc.) and fixtures to determine if a part is out of spec.
Use blueprints, tech cards, and other instructions to determine the specs and tolerances of a part.
Determine the best method to rework a part and bring it back into spec without causing damage.
Straighten, heat, bend, push, pull, and otherwise move the part back into tech card and blueprint tolerances.
Use pneumatic drills to target parts for machining to blueprint specs.
Follow written and verbal instruction and work as a team member.
Work and interact in a positive and professional manner with support departments, including engineering, quality, and other manufacturing areas.
Train Straightening Mechanic as needed.
Work outside department as required.
Develop rework plans with other departments.
