Battery Research Scientist
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a researcher with a strong background in advanced lithium ion batteries, materials synthesis, electrochemical cell fabrication, and battery integration. APL supports the ever-increasing power and energy demands in both national security and commercial sectors by exploring various 'out-of-the-box' and game-changing ideas and by realizing them through working prototypes.
The Research and Exploratory Development Department (REDD) at APL has an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented team player to pursue R&D efforts in advanced battery technologies under the supervision of a project manager. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record in the areas of solid state electrochemistry, Li-ion batteries, materials chemistry, or interfacial surface science, solid record of performance in externally funded projects, and experience with working closely with sponsors and contractors. The successful candidate will require exceptional communication skills and the initiative and patience to see large projects to completion.
This position will also engage in a wide spectrum of materials R&D including but not limited to the battery-related research. The candidate is expected to perform leading research by developing efficient power conversion and energy storage materials and devices based on a solid theoretical foundation and through a hypothesis-driven problem-solving approach. The successful candidate would work and communicate closely and effectively with team members to ensure all tasks are performed to extremely high standards.
- Conduct innovative R&D in power conversion and energy storage materials and devices. Duties include, but not limited to, developing high capacity electrode chemistries/materials for Li-ion batteries, electrochemical cell fabrication and test, optimizing processes, and battery prototyping (40%)
- Interact with laboratory technicians, scientists, and engineers daily to ensure statement of work tasks are completed within the agreed upon timeframe. Report work progress in both oral and written form (10%)
- Critically thinks about and provide solutions to current shortcomings associated with current technologies/approaches (10%)
- Pursue research in power and energy materials and devices under the mentorship and supervision of APL senior staff by formulating and managing large-scale projects from the proposal-writing stage through the final delivery of successful results to meet our customer needs (35%)
- Contribute to sponsor briefings, white papers and proposals, and publish original research in this area and to present the work at academic and technical conferences. (5%)

Master's Degree in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or related field.
Solid understanding of electrochemistry and synthesis/characterization of materials
3 years of laboratory experience in fabricating and testing electrochemical cells and prototyping advanced batteries including Li-ion battery pouch cells
2 years of industry, government labs, and/or academic (post graduate) experience working on externally sponsored projects
Experience with battery electrode fabrication and relevant techniques including slurry preparation, coating, calendaring, etc.
Experience with battery testing techniques and data analysis (galvanostatic charge/discharge, cycle life, rate capability, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy etc.)
Experience with electrolyte characterization (e.g. electrochemical stability window, ionic conductivity, etc.)
Experience with materials characterization tools including but not limited to optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy, etc.
Experience with active powder material synthesis and polymer electrolytes
Experience in a battery manufacturing setting and interfacing directly with sponsors

Solid State Battery Scientist
A123 Systems, LLC has an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented team player to lead R&D efforts to integrate leading emergent solid state battery technologies with A123's manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of achievement in the areas of solid state electrochemistry, Li-ion batteries, materials chemistry, or interfacial surface science. Primary job directives will include (1) developing scalable methods to incorporate high capacity anode and cathode chemistries with solid electrolyte materials, and (2) driving the minimization of anode|electrolyte and cathode|electrolyte interfacial impedance values both through internal efforts and collaboration with external electrolyte partners. The successful candidate will require exceptional communication skills and the initiative and patience to see large projects to completion.
Maximize solid state battery performance within the constraints of large-scale manufacturing processes.
Work with external collaborators to design, direct, and carry out experiments to achieve project milestones
Build small-scale prototype cells to measure key metrics and demonstrate technology developments

Specific Skills and Background
Ph.D. with 3+ years industrial experience involving applied electrochemistry.
Lithium ion battery experience strongly preferred.
Research experience with solid electrolytes is highly desired
Experience with DOE (Design of Experiments) methods and Minitab software is preferred
Knowledge of lithium-ion battery manufacture, characterization, and failure analysis is highly desired
Ability to clearly and confidently communicate through oral and written modes
Familiarity and proficiency with advanced analytical techniques
Comfortable with a "hands-on" approach to getting things done
Ability and willingness to keep meticulous written and electronic record of experimental activity

Assist with other maintenance duties. Service batteries, as needed. Perform weekly, monthly and annual services on batteries. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Must be willing to work independently and in a safe manner. Must be willing to complete assigned Battery Changer sanitation duties.
Must communicate effectively verbally and in writing to complete required documentation. Must have good organizational skills and be able to work with minimal supervision. Must have no more than 7 attendance points.
Must have not received a written warning with in the last 6 months. Must be out of probationary period. Must be on current shift for 6 months or more.
