Battery cell manufacturing process improvement for mass production lines

Analyzes and evaluate cell physical data. This may include; dimensions of jelly roll, cell and cross-sectional dimensions. From this data evaluation is needed to determine direct and interaction effects of the machinery and processes.
Line setup and evaluation of performance of manufacturing equipment.
Analyzes operating procedures and functions of equipment and machinery to reduce time and cost of assembly manufacturing processes.
Provides engineering support to cell assembly as well as electrodes production teams to resolve manufacturing process issues.
Work closely with other team members to increase understanding of failure modes, performance and life expectancy of cell products.
Collaborate with Supplier Quality team in their communication with material suppliers, related to the development and validation of detailed material specifications for new materials, and the resolution of any quality issues
Applies principles and knowledge of chemical engineering to solve environmental problems.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety: Colleagues are expected to work in a safe manner at all times and report all unsafe acts and conditions. All accidents and damage to product, equipment, and structures must be reported to the supervisor immediately. Comply with OSHA and MSDS standards. In the case of an emergency evacuation of the facility, the Yard Driver colleague must check all areas of the yard for drivers and have them assemble at the Welcome Center.
All proper PPE (personal protective equipment) necessary to perform all the above duties in compliance with company policy. This position is responsible for knowing the published Dropped Battery and Chemical Spill procedures in the case of an incident in the battery changing area. All spills must be reported to the supervisor on duty immediately. This position is responsible for monitoring the availability of all the necessary Chemical Spill equipment and materials and informing his/her supervisor if new equipment or materials are needed. All PPE, materials, and safety equipment must be maintained in a clean and working condition.
Responsible for the safe, accurate loading, unloading, storage, and retrieval of vessels while consistently maintaining productivity standards as well as safe handling of battery equipment and charge stations.
Verifies inbound and outbound shipments are accurate and free of damage.
Perform daily inspection of Yard Truck and RF equipment and audit per shift.

You will be responsible for designing battery systems for current and emerging Bose product categories. Participate in inventory of maintenance stock and parts as directed by maintenance clerk
Examine and maintains protective guards and other safety devices on all equipment and makes adjustments as necessary
Perform general maintenance of all facility equipment
Assist maintenance person or clerk as assigned, deliver parts and tools, and follow specific instructions
Ability to work at heights of at least 40ft
Perform any project work necessary
Interface with vendors as required
Operate Electrical testing equipment

High School education or equivalent
Experience in forklift maintenance, conveyor maintenance or a related field
Mechanical, Electrical or Electro mechanical aptitude
Ability to weld
Proven computer literate
Ability to perform maintenance on Industrial Batteries, including watering, washing, testing and repair
Ability to lift, push or pull items weighing 70 pounds to 100 pounds
Knowledge of hydraulics, electrical and pneumatics
Forklift certification as provided by Staples
Military or Trade school background

SR. BATTERY MANUFACTURING ENGINEER
Our aim is to design, manufacture, and validate the highest performance, lowest cost, and fundamentally safest batteries in the Aerospace Industry. We're looking for the right person to bring equal vision, leadership, and execution in the transition from proof-of-concept to rapid and scalable production. This role is embedded within Design Engineering and focuses on Manufacturing, as we believe the hardware design and manufacturing processes are inherently inseparable.
Provide leadership in the production ramp-up of new product lines. This including setting strategic goals, and executing tactical project management to meet program requirements.
Perform as a hands-on engineering liaison between design engineering and production. Move hardware designs and manufacturing process from concept, through validation, and into production.
Develop proof of concept manufacturing processes, process controls, and in situ verifications. Specify equipment, coordinate with suppliers, and demonstrate process capabilities.
Introduce robotics and automation as justified by cost and quality.
Design and produce engineering drawings for precision tooling and test fixtures. Interfaces include but not limited to mechanical, thermal, and electrical.
Support the development of SpaceX manufacturing standards.
Troubleshoot and disposition fabrication issues on prototype and production assemblies on an aggressive production schedule. Participate in failure analysis to drive to root cause and implement preventative actions.
Update and validate designs in response to manufacturing optimization, parts obsolescence, and system requirement change.
As necessary, participate in hardware validation, including the development of vacuum chambers, thermal control systems, battery cycling equipment and fatigue testers.
Bachelor of Science in electrical, mechanical, or manufacturing engineering.
5+ years of professional experience in hardware development, production or test.
Professional experience with tooling design in a manufacturing environment.
Experience transitioning products from design to manufacturing (new product introduction) as part of a cross-functional team.
Demonstrated experience implementing Design for Manufacture and Design for Test.
Working proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
Demonstrated experience with 3D CAD modeling software (e.g. NX/Unigraphics, Solidworks, Catia)
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Masters of Science in electrical, mechanical, manufacturing or materials engineering.
MFG process experience:
Experience with epoxy bonding processing including surface preparation, epoxy mixing, and automated dispensing.
Experience with resistance, ultrasonic, and laser welding.
Experience with vision recognition tools.
Basic competency with Python and SQL databases.
Experience with semi-automated manufacturing and data management including robotics.
Battery Test Experience:
Experience with lithium ion battery acceptance, qualification, and characterization test methods.
Experience with battery cycling equipment and data management.
Product Dev Testing:
Experience with vacuum chambers and thermal control systems.
Experience with accelerated lifecycle test methods and analysis, including thermal and mechanical testing.
Experience with non-destructive test techniques including modal (vibration) excitation, dye penetrant, acoustic microscopy, CT-scan, thermography, eddy current inspection, etc.
Experience with failure analysis techniques including metallographic cross sectioning.
Experience with material characterization including EDS, XRF, FTIR, DSC, DMA, TGA.
Experience using NX/Unigraphics software.
Ability to identify and analyze production process improvements for rate and quality.
Hands-on engineer with a passion for continuous improvement and building the best hardware.
Demonstrated capability solving complex problems with little to no supervision on schedule as an individual or as a member of an integrated team.
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
Experience in a fast-paced, iterative design environments within the consumer electronics, mobile handset, medical devices, aerospace, marine or automotive industries.
Able to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
