Electron Beam Furnace Operator
Operate and maintain TIMET's high productivity vacuum induction furnaces located in Vallejo, CA. Interpret and respond to the needs of the equipment.
40-60% of the operators' time will be spent operating the furnace; the balance will be devoted to the application of special skills.
Perform preoperative checks prior to and during pump down cycle.
Use pre-pump and start up checklist.
Set up and operate the furnace as directed for melting to include:
Material preparation and loading material.
Pumping down furnace.
Melting and casting.
Performing furnace turn-arounds.
Perform preventative maintenance.
Understand the basic chemistry specifications for common products.
Interpret and control the casting conditions of the furnace as they relate to the product being produced.
Interpret gauges, meters, etc. while operating the VIM furnace.
Maintain operating records and logs.
Maintain material and maintenance needed lists.
Clean out furnaces during maintenance cycles and replaces damaged components. Change molds, deskull and patch liner.
Operate leak detectors, pressure controllers, and metal sorting devices.
Use various hand and power tools as directed.
Perform maintenance required to ensure good operating condition of furnace and auxiliary equipment such as vacuum, hydraulic, pneumatic and cooling systems.
Correctly uses material handling equipment such as forklifts and hoists.
Perform mechanical skill functions such as flame cut, arc weld, silver solder, and soft solder.
Correctly use such tools as wrenches, drills, grinders, saws, and drill press.40-60% of the operators' time will be spent operating the furnace; the balance will be devoted to the application of special skills.
Function a viable member of the furnace team.
Work on tasks outside of this job description as directed by the supervisors for training, emergency relief purposes; generally for short periods of time.
Work in accordance with established safety rules and good housekeeping practices..

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Two years industrial mechanical experience.
The ability to stick weld mild stainless steels.
Ability to operate a gas torch.
Ability to read and interpret drawings and blue prints.

MUST be willing to work all 3 shifts and weekends
Ability to lay out own work.
Ability to MIG and TIG weld.
Pneumatic and hydraulic knowledge.

Machine Operator/ Electron Beam Welder
Perform required duties to set up, operate and maintain one or two sequential lines of equipment to deburr and ultrasonically clean a variety of sized of low carbon backing material and high speed steel wire to electron beam weld the two materials to form bi-metal coil stock.
Mount pancake or oscillating coils of backing material on appropriate play out stand using overhead electric hoist. Spark test to confirm type of material and feed ebd through deburring rolls, washer, welder, defect detector and on to take up reel. Mount high speed wire at washer and feed through welder.
Set up welder, install inner and outer locks, and replace seals at vacuum chamber. Adjust welding beam, regulate speed, and adjust voltage and amperage as required. Inspect welded material with microscope to assure proper location, shape and quality of bead.
Remove and dispose of burring shavings. Remove burring rolls, clean mounts and bearings, add lubrication, reverse or replace rollers in matching pairs. Lap rollers in automatic lapping machine, wash and inspect sharpened cutters under microscope.
Maintain ultrasonic cleaner adding caustic solution; maintain level of warm and cold water rinse. Dump and clean tanks, change seals, felt pads, fluid, air filters, etc. as required.
Monitor operation throughout. Observe welding through optical lens make necessary corrections and adjustments. Note signal light as take up coil approaches capacity, run to visual mark, cut band and start end on new reel. Wire completed coil in two places and transfer coil to annealing or temporary holding rack using tilting table and overhead hoist.
Observe and obey all safety rules, regulations and practices and employ all safety equipment and devices.
Perform other similar or related duties as assigned or directed.

Evaluates, investigates, and performs applied research and development on emerging ATP, AO, and WFC electro-optical technologies to improve performance and reduce cost for HEL products and solutions. As part of an interdisciplinary engineering and technology team, collaborates with subject matter experts in software, mechanical, power, thermal, electrical, production, and specialty engineering to support programs, pursuits, and internal R&D activities.

Assistant Beam Diagnostic Scientist
Provides the necessary design, analysis and testing of particle beam and photon beam diagnostics systems for the Advanced Photon Source accelerator systems. Provides physics support for the beam diagnostic systems for the accelerator. This work is carried out in collaboration with physicists and engineers associated with the accelerator sub-systems, under the direction of a senior staff member. Principal assignment is to support the group`s photon diagnostics for the APS storage ring and injector complex.
Good to considerable knowledge of the design, construction and operation of synchrotron light diagnostics including, IR/visible/UV diagnostics, X-ray beam diagnostics, laser technology and general accelerator beam diagnostic technology.
Ability to utilize state of the art analytic and simulation techniques in the design of accelerator diagnostics, the creation of drawings, and in the design of new beam diagnostic hardware.
Familiarity with electrical system troubleshooting techniques.
The ability to determine problem areas and recognize the need for additional expertise.
The ability to program in a high level language.
