Job Responsibilities (May include, but not limited to the following)
Inspect, service, repair and maintain vehicles, trailers, aerials and power operated equipment. Work may be performed primarily in company service garages as well as occasional job site field work. Individual(s) selected must be able to work in a team environment as well as independently. Individual must be highly motivated, customer service driven, detail oriented and quality focused. Position will involve frequent lifting in excess of 50 lbs as well as prolonged standing. The ability to inspect, service and diagnose as well as properly make minor and major repairs to electrical, hydraulic, air conditioning, gasoline and diesel systems are key success factors for this position.
High school diploma or GED
A two year technical, vocational or trade school diploma in automotive, truck, and/or heavy equipment service repair and maintenance with a minimum of two (2) years verifiable experience in these defined fields is required, five (5) years' experience is preferred.
Successful applicant must meet all requirements of FMCSR Parts 382 and 391 including the possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL Class A), or obtain the license within six (6) months' of employment.
The individual must either currently have or be able to obtain a Minnesota annual vehicle inspectors certification
Applicant must have the ability to read/write and understand the English language, perform basic mathematics and possess basic computer skills
Successful applicant must furnish standard and metric tools in accordance with the Fleet department's required tool list
A high level of safety awareness with a demonstrated commitment to working safely at all times is required
Ability to lift 50 or more pounds routinely
Fluid Power Society and/or ASE certifications desired.

Incumbent must meet specified levels on annual physical fitness tests, and pass periodic medical exams for wildland fire personnel, commensurate with current incident management qualifications.
This position may require regular and recurring overtime and shift work during fire season.
Government facilities are required to provide a smoke free environment for their employees. Smoking will be permitted only in designated areas.
You must be 18 years of age or older to be assigned to a hazardous position.
Dependent on the Duty Location, this may be a Bargaining Unit position.
You must be able to obtain and maintain a valid automobile driver's license.
THIS IS A DRUG TESTING DESIGNATED POSITION in accordance with Executive Order 12564, and under the Department's Drug Free Workplace Program. Applicant(s) tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use and to pass the test prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
All applicants must be aware that Federal employees must obtain and maintain a favorable background investigation. A background investigation will be conducted by the employing office following acceptance of the position. Failure to obtain a favorable determination of the background investigation will result in the cancellation of the offer or will be grounds for termination.
Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.

If the position is filled at a lower grade level, subsequent promotion to the next grade level will be processed without further competition dependent upon administrative approval and the continuing need for an actual assignment and performance of higher-level duties.
This position has been identified as one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard. This position has been categorized as a Senior Firefighter, and requires selectee to meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.
To qualify for the GS-05 grade level, 1 year (12 months) of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04 is required. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to:
Serving as a crewmember on an engine or hand crew; utilizing a variety of specialized tools, equipment, and techniques while actively suppressing wildfires. Perform basic fireline activities such as line construction, hose layout, operations of pumps and accessories, lopping and scattering of fuels using hand tools.
To qualify for the GS-06 grade level, 1 year (12 months) of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05 is required. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to:
Serving as a senior crewmember of an engine or hand crew; performing all aspects of wildland and fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop-up; and performing fire engine operations including starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustments.
Substitution of Education for Experience:
For the GS-05: Successful completion of a full 4-year (120 semester hours) course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.
For the GS-06: 18 semester hours of graduate education which is DIRECTLY related to work of the position.
Specialized experience and substitution of education for experience may be combined to meet the qualification requirement.
Selective Placement Factor(s): This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified.
Selective Placement Factor #1: This position is a Primary Firefighter position and is subject to a maximum entry age (MEA). The MEA is the date immediately preceding your 37th birthday. Applicants must not have reached age 37 at the time of appointment, unless proof is provided of prior Federal service in another primary covered position, or you are a preference eligible veteran.
Selective Placement Factor (s) #2: To meet IFPM requirements for this position, you must have possessed all of the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications and training requirements to be considered eligible for this position (currency not required):
A) Firefighter, Type 1 (FFT1), AND
B) Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290).
You must meet all IFPM qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
Physical Demands: Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance, and superior
conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and
carrying of heavy items.
Work Environment: Work is primarily performed in forest and range environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be
extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, and in smoky conditions.
This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements.
The MEA for this position shall not exceed age 37; unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday.
You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide this documentation with your application will result in loss of eligibility to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement.
