High Speed Bindery And Folder Machine Operator
Primary Purpose and Function
Effectively meet production goals to satisfy the demands of our clients and intra-company departments while upholding the highest level of quality and commitment to Qdmh.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
§ Refers to the job jacket to locate important information, such as fold specifications, on the job that is running or that will be running.
§ Sets up the machines by referring to the job jacket for the job specifications, measures & loads paper, sets the registers, zeros out the counter, resets the factor, ensures that the material is under the guide wire and makes necessary adjustments.
§ Loads the paper onto the folder and inspects the direction of the components, while the job is running, to ensure that the fold and components are correct.
§ Ensures that the component is correctly folded before running the job by having the supervisor sign-off on a folder piece.
§ Observes the job as it is running to ensure that the material is folding properly by inspecting the fold, sides & the height and by doing side by side comparison.
§ Runs samples for personalized or match mail components, records the samples in the sample log and places the sample onto the sample rack.
§ Completes the quality checklist form as directed throughout the day by filling in all required information.
§ Fills out the Printstream and production reports by entering information such as the job number, title, start & stop times, quality and item numbers.
§ Refers to job jacket for important information such as set-up specifications, the blueline, work order and special instructions.
§ Ensures the component is correctly cut and folder before running the job by comparing the folded piece to the job jacket specifications (work order, blueline and samples).
§ Blows off the machine at the end of each shift by locating the air hose, attaching the air hose the air source, squeezing the lever on the handle and blowing off dust, trash and paper.
§ Displays a strong willingness to learn and develop new skills.
§ Displays a willingness to complete any tasks that will help the bindery, MAC and Qdmh meet its goals.
§ Works safely to prevent on-the-job injuries by following all safety standards.
§ Palletization- keeps PQR lists, tray tags, bindery tags and placecards for each pallet job.
§ Follows all HIPPA regulations and requirements.
§ Disposes personalized waste into the personalized bin and blank waste into the bank bin.
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Must be able to stand, lift up to 50 lbs., reach, knell and bend for extended periods of time. Ability to read, write and communicate in clear business English is necessary. Be able to work in a team atmosphere and be held accountable for quality of work produced.

Monitor quality, output and productivity. Working knowledge of the set up, adjustment, procedures, capabilities and limitations of equipment to perform the full range of standard and specialized folding, collating, and cutting of printed materials to complete a finished product. Familiarity with different paper weights, sizes, kinds and colors so as to be able to identify paper conditions (i.e. excessive moisture or curling that frequently requires additional machine adjustment). Familiarity with basic mathematics (i.e. decimals, metric units) to understand dimensional requirements contained in job orders and to make more complicated adjustments.
Ability to use the full range of standard and specialized tools and devices to adjust and maintain the functional accuracy and operating conditions of the bindery machines. Skill in making adjustments to powered machines using handtools (i.e. wrenches, screwdrivers, punches, knives) as well as more specialized hand tools, usually furnished by the machine manufacturer. Knowledge of operating procedures for bindery equipment such as folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, binding/gluing machines.
Ability to read and interpret written work which indicates the number and sequence of machine operations required to complete the work and maintain dimensional accuracy in accordance with instructions provided. Position Overview This position is responsible for operating and maintaining the automated in-line bindery system (Gathering Machine). Uses computerized systems and mechanical ability to produce high quality bound books of various types and sizes. Operator must achieve and maintain proficiency on both standalone machine as well as in-line operation.
Operator adjusts and calibrates equipment using computerized and conventional mechanical means in order to enhance productivity and quality. Ensures that the correct work (pages, covers, etc.) are produced according to a pre-set schedule, ready to ship for on-time delivery. Maintains accurate reports to track and verify production.
Understands and uses with proficiency different types of paper stock as well as multiple job sizes and integrated processes. Provides preventive maintenance as scheduled. In all aspects of production, adheres to and achieves results in accordance with NASTA standards.
Coordinates issues involving repairs, parts, production defects, and system problems with Maintenance and Bindery Supervisor. Keeps area clean and hazard free and complies with all aspects of the plant¿s Safety program.
Qualifications High School degree or GED required. Must have at least 3 years of relevant production experience in finishing and/or light industrial maintenance.

Study sketches, machine specifications or parts to determine type and dimensions of parts needed. Dismantle machine or equipment to examine parts for defect or to remove defective parts. Replace defective part with new part or repair or reproduce part needed.
Assemble and test machine to verify correction of malfunction. Maintain and lubricate machine tools and equipment. Repair or replace faulty wiring, switches, or relays.
Replace belts, suction cups, and hoses as required. Establish and maintain a preventative maintenance program for all shop equipment. Determine when outside technicians are needed to accomplish repairs, and advise management.
Perform work in an efficient, safe and productive manner. To service machinery in order of priority. Assist in department areas as needed to maximize productivity and/or quality.
Attend classes for additional technical training when requested by management. Keep management informed as to the cooperation and efficiency of the crews on any machines that you service. Communicate any service that will result in lengthy down time. Communicate any foreseeable production problems (material or mechanical in nature).
