Model Maker II
Designs, develops, machines and fabricates new medical devices, mechanisms and tooling in support of new product development and continuous improvement activities. Works with Physicians, Design Engineers/Teams, and independently to rapidly produce concept and functional prototypes and mechanisms.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Uses basic and advanced machine shop practices in conjunction with established engineering and machining practices to complete the required tasks.
Work with Design Teams, and priority list, to manage assigned projects, action items, scheduled labs, meetings, and project milestones.
Works with various levels of detail from concept sketch up to detailed engineering drawings.
Set-up and operate mills, lathes, grinders, welders, EDM (wire & sinker), CNC conversational mill, laser marker, laser welding, etc.
Make 3D printed models for concept development.
Works on projects of varying complexity from component design up to completed device.
Is involved in the earliest phases of new product related engineering projects, where creativity or ingenuity is normally required.
Works with Designers and Engineers to develop and manufacture new surgical instruments and tooling by fabricating prototypes, functional mechanisms and molds.
Review Drawing/Sketches to ensure functionality and manufacturability.
Maintain area equipment, gauges and tooling by execution of calibration, preventative maintenance and general housekeeping practices/procedures.
- 5 years of CNC machining/set-up/programming experience required.
Expertise with CNC machining, CAD/CAM, 3D Printing, prototype molding, orthopedics, arthroscopy, and manufacturability.
High school diploma with hands on machine shop experience.
Knowledge of basic and advanced machine shop principles.

SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS:
Performs a non-repetitive tool making and die repair operation to construct, alter, or repair tools, jigs, fixtures, dies, machine parts, and gauges. Applies knowledge of tool and die design and construction. Requires knowledge of advanced mathematics, metal properties, machine layout, and production procedures.
Follows detailed instructions and procedures, including blueprints and specification charts, to determine dimensions, operating sequences, and methods. The toolmaker must also use considerable discretion when preparing parts from verbal instructions or from used tool and die parts to determine necessary modifications.
Performs exacting set-ups of various machine shop tools, presses, and grinding machines requiring moderate difficulty.
Checks work using all types of precision measuring instruments such as Micrometers, Height Gauges, Gauge Blocks, and Dial Indicators as required. This operation requires a high degree of accuracy.
Makes sketches of parts to determine proper procedures and dimensions in building parts.
Dismantles tools and dies when necessary to make repairs and modifications.
Operates all types of shop equipment such as lathes, drill presses, milling machines, grinders, saws, etc.
Makes determinations as to the proper types of steel to be used to prepare the necessary parts.
Uses heat treating equipment to bring tools and die parts to the proper hardness levels.
Works from work orders submitted by the Production Department and assigned by Engineer.
Verifies the conformance of machine parts to required specifications.
Occasionally assists in the training and instruction of employees in the Tool and Die trainee program and in the orientation of newly hired Tool and Die makers.
Detects and reports faulty operation of equipment, defective materials, and unusual conditions to assigned supervisor.
Maintains work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
Observes prescribed safety regulations, gauging frequencies, and other standards of operation and conduct.
Performs other related duties as directed by assigned supervisor.
Performs die set-ups and all other die setter functions as is necessary when a die setter for any reason is unable to carry out his/her assigned duties.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES & AUTHORITY:
Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, tooling drawings and work in process documentation
Designs ,builds, changes, and repairs dies, forms, cutting tools, gauges, jigs and fixtures
Builds precision dies, tooling, and prototypes using conventional and numerical controlled metal-cutting and forming machines.

Effectively troubleshoot and carry out projects
Fitting, assembling, inspecting machined parts and assemblies using hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
Effectively troubleshoot and spot any flaws in the operation/or finish of machine tools or manufactured parts and take corrective action
Perform preventative maintenance and work on continuous improvement projects
Planning efficient effective sequence of events and operations from set up to completion of project or task
Act as a liaison between Production and the tool room
Informs supervisor immediately of any and all work related concerns

What You Will Do:
Provides technical support for scientists, engineers and technicians in the design, processing, sheet metal fabrication, machining and repair of precision instruments and components in a research environment with minimal supervision.
Understands and utilizes formal engineering drawings, solid models, sketches, written specifications, and verbal instructions to complete fabrication assignments.
Utilizes manual rolls, brakes, punches, shears, and other sheet metal fabrication equipment required to manufacture and assemble precision sheet metal components and large assemblies for ground based and airborne instruments.
Utilizes precision measuring equipment to inspect accuracy of work. Ability to assemble, test, modify, install, and repair instruments as required.
Generates 2D geometry, i.e. circular, elliptical and multi-sided shapes, hole patterns and points, utilizing PC based CAM software. Utilizes geometry to program 2-axis CNC milling machines to fabricate flat patterns and shapes.
Performs set-ups for sheet metal fabrication. Understands setbacks (K-values) and bend allowances in sheet metal manufacturing.
Performs set-ups and operates manual and 2-axis CNC milling machines in the process of fabricating precision instrument components.
Performs set-ups and welds components to customer's specifications using MIG and TIG welding equipment. Common materials are aluminum, stainless steel, and steel.
Utilizes air-less paint gun and breathing respirator to apply primer and paint to sheet metal and machined components, assemblies, and instruments.
Consults with the Shop Supervisor to understand project requirements and to develop processing techniques for the most efficient method of sheet metal fabrication and/or machining. Reports as to project status and difficulties encountered.
Recommends new and replacement sheet metal tooling purchases to ensure maximum efficiency and maintains an adequate supply of such tooling.
Performs all duties and responsibilities in compliance with all applicable OSHA and UCAR safety regulations.

- Completion of a relevant machine trade vocational program and at least six (6) years of relevant, high precision sheet metal trade experience.

Demonstrated skills in mechanical instrument making, machine operation and selection for various fabrication requirements.

Mid-Level Machinist Skills; holds tolerances /-0.002, capable of setting up and running both manual and CNC mills, lathes, grinders, etc., repairs and replaces fixtures and components in support of production, performs tasks with minimal guidance and supervision.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Repair, build, clean and assemble all types of tools and dies and perform machining operations on tool room machines using all necessary machine attachments to make replacement parts, tools, and dies.
Operates various types of machine shop equipment (manual/CNC) to complete assignment as required. Select cutting tools, holding fixtures, machine feeds and speeds, collects and lubricants and gear ratios for all kinds of metals and pieces to be worked.
Works from and interprets blue prints and 3D models to create or modify, molds, dies, tools and fixtures.
Takes instructions for senior tool makers to create or modify, molds, dies, tools, jigs, and fixtures.
Must possess good technical judgment and able to set logical action plans for machining parts to print by determining the sequence of operations.
Regular reporting of progress to the management team, both verbally and through written reports.
Assists in the estimating, planning, and timely completion of assigned work.
Records data required to accurately track mold, die maintenance activity.
Maintains the work area through good housekeeping and safety practice in accordance to 5S standards.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
AA / Technical degree, technical apprenticeship, or 5 years' experience in a technical tool making role.
Minimum 5 years' experience setting up and operating CNC machines to hold tolerances of /-0.002 in a medical environment for mold, dies, and fixtures.
Experience with CAD programs, especially Solidworks
Familiar with CAM software for G-Code generation.
Able to read and interpret part and assembly drawing and sketch.
Excellent communications skills, both written and oral are required.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, and operating procedures. Must have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence. The ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization is required.

Plan and construct a wide variety of tools, dies, fixtures and gauges to very close tolerances, or construct more complex units where design is available.
Perform development work, layout and difficult tool room machine operations, fitting, timing and adjusting, e.g. combination dies for parts or irregular contour, box type drill jigs with difficult locating or nesting features, ordinary index milling fixtures.
Dismantles and repairs or replaces parts of damaged dies and fixtures, fits and assembles parts, and tests repaired dies for proper operation.

Estimate work hour requirements for completion of job assignments and ensure that tasks are completed effectively and on time, consistent with production schedule requirements.
Adjust priorities, and keeps others appropriately informed, to meet production schedules.
Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase the efficiency of the shop, the department, or the work crew.
Analyze and resolve work problems, or assist workers in solving work problems.
Maintain an adequate spare parts inventory
Organize, repair and maintain tools.
Ensure completion of all required production paperwork, records and documentation (time cards, quality records, etc)
Act as a technical resource to address and resolve inquiries and problems; analyze and resolve work problems, and assist operators in solving work problems.
Observe work and monitor output to ensure that operators conform to production or processing standards.
Ensure compliance with departmental housekeeping standards and all safety and work rules and regulations.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university or eight (8) years related experience and/or training in tooling design, maintenance, repair and manufacturing; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
