To produce quality stitched shoe uppers that are used to help develop, confirm and commercialize new product in the most cost efficient manner possible. Provide suggestion for alternative construction methods to improve costing and assembly of prototypes. Create quality uppers the most effective way possible, to be utilized in the manufacturing process in order to streamline or reduce the length of the development process.
Work closely with the pattern maker, material cutter, and shoemakers to determine best process and sequence of assembly for each shoe upper design.
Pre-fit cut upper parts by marking, skiving, splitting, perforating, etc. so as to produce cut upper parts that are ready to be assembled into a finished stitched upper ready for lasting.
Assemble individual pre-fit cut parts in the proper sequence and following the provided specifications for the stitching details to produce a quality finished upper.
Through the above process, produce quality pairs of matched upper ready for lasting and remaining shoe making steps.
Operate all necessary machinery required to pre-fit and produce uppers: i.e., splitter, skiver, and various stitching machines.
Provide a technical review of each project with the designer or developer with suggestions on how to improve it, if possible.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Strong experience stitching footwear uppers and creating footwear prototypes
Ability to operate all machinery required for pre-fitting and stitching shoes.
Ability to learn to operate the auto cutting machinery.
A strong understanding of materials used in prototyping.
Be capable of thinking through sequence of operations on uppers and make improvement suggestion to pattern engineers to improve the prototypes.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Complete all projects within the established timelines.

Job Duties include but are not limited to:
Operate machine effectively and safely according to standards to ensure a quality product
Perform and document preventative and routine maintenance as needed or assigned
Make-ready the stacker, tiers, mail head, mail control.
Make-ready and run all aspects of the saddle stitcher (pockets, gatherer, stitcher heads, in feed, trimmer, mail table and mail head, etc…)
Make-ready and run demographic and inkjet.
Fill in for other master operators when needed
Assist other master operators with start-ups as possible when own line is down
Support material handlers during continuous and self-supported running (including mail-sacking, skid stacking, pocket filling, cover filling, etc.) and give work direction during downtime and clean-up
Read and understand binding instructions, mailing instructions, and support the BCS system
Ensure proper functioning of safety devices (i.e. guards, stop buttons)
Maintain a safe and clean work environment

Working knowledge of the set up, adjustment, procedures, capabilities and limitations of equipment to perform the full range of stitching and collating of printed materials to complete a finished product. Familiarity with different paper weights, sizes, kinds and colors so as to be able to identify paper conditions (i.e. excessive moisture or curling that frequently requires additional machine adjustment). Familiarity with basic mathematics (i.e. decimals, metric units) to understand dimensional requirements contained in job orders and to make more complicated adjustments. Ability to use the full range of standard and specialized tools and devices to adjust and maintain the functional accuracy and operating conditions of the bindery machines. Skill in making adjustments to powered machines using hand tools (i.e. wrenches, screwdrivers, punches, knives) as well as more specialized hand tools, usually furnished by the machine manufacturer. Knowledge of operating procedures for bindery equipment. Ability to read and interpret written work which indicates the number and sequence of machine operations required to complete the work and maintain dimensional accuracy in accordance with instructions provided.
