The Department of Waste Resources has an opportunity for an Equipment Operator II! The Equipment Operator II will be tasked to skillfully operate motorized construction and maintenance heavy equipment in support of landfill site operations.
The Equipment Operator II responsibilities require advanced training and complex forms of manipulation of heavy equipment such as tracked Bulldozers, Compactors, Scrapers, Motor Graders, Excavators, and Trucks with an attached trailer. The selected candidate will use equipment to push, compact and cover municipal solid waste. Additionally, the incumbent will operate the water truck for dust control, as well as loaders, backhoes, and other equipment for road maintenance/grading work.
The most competitive candidates will have extensive experience operating a D8, D9 or D10 or comparable size bulldozer in a landfill setting. The incumbent will work a 9/80 schedule Monday through Saturday (Rotating shifts as needed) and will support the Engineering Operations Section out of Lamb Canyon in Beaumont.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:• Operates tracked and/or wheeled motorized construction equipment such as loaders, excavators, motor graders, scrapers, refuse compactors, oil mixers and dozers within required tolerance in the maintenance and construction of roads, landfills, flood control channels and other public work facilities.
Prepares, grades, and shapes new county roads, landfills, flood control channels; checks and sets grades.
Works from survey reference marks, plans, and specifications; clears roads, channels and other facilities of storm debris and damage; constructs and repairs storm drains, culverts, catch basins, and concrete gutters.
Services and maintains assigned equipment; may operate low-bed or trucks with trailers in hauling equipment or materials.
Uses a variety of hand and power tools in performing work.
RECRUITING GUIDELINES:Experience: Two years experience in the maintenance or construction of public work facilities such as roads, airports, landfills, or flood control channels which included one year operating tracked and/or wheeled motorized construction equipment as a primary duty.
Knowledge of: The tools, materials, and equipment commonly used in public works construction and maintenance; the operation and maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered construction and maintenance equipment.
Ability to: Perform a variety of skilled maintenance and construction tasks, including working to grade; safely operate tracked and/or wheeled motorized equipment; read plans and specifications relating to construction and field maintenance work; perform lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 75 pounds with assistance; follow oral and written directions.

Normal Minimum Requirements:
Must have a valid Class A CDL Driver's License
Must have ability to obtain Crane Institute Certification (CIC)
Must have an Operating Engineer Journeyman Card, or equivalent certification
Available to work overtime

Physically able to bend, stoop, and lift for extended periods of time
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Crane Certification is preferred

In order to qualify for this position, you will have to progress through two different exams. The first will be a written test that must be passed with a score of 85% or better. Upon successful completion of the first exam, you will then move into the physical skills stage and progress to the interview. Each step of the process must be passed in order to progress to the next step.

The interview is a behavioral based interview incorporating our Core Competencies. In this process we believe that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior and more recent behavior is a better predictor of future behavior than older behavior, and that long-standing trends are better predictors of behavior than isolated incidents. The interview questions are designed to solicit behavior patterns that indicate predictability whether the candidate can perform the job as required.

This job classification shall possess the ability to learn the required duties necessary to use all tools and equipment relative to the work group and to obtain and maintain the necessary licenses to perform all the duties of this classification. He/she must be able to complete the task sign offs in twelve (12) months.
Essential Functions: (As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, these include the following responsibilities, minimum job knowledge, skills, and abilities. This is not necessarily an all-inclusive listing.)
Familiar with the Company's Safety Manual, Traffic Control Manual, Standards, accounting procedures, rigging procedures, heavy lifting procedures, and other procedures and applicable rules and regulations.
Successfully pass all training requirements (task sign offs). Inspect and maintain equipment as required
Load and secure loads on all equipment
Operate and drive equipment up to and including vehicles with more than 44,000 lbs/GVR and powered by engines of 200 or more horsepower with a standard transmission with at least two ranges and a combination of both mechanical and air controls
Responsible for loading and over-the road transport. Some of the materials and equipment may be designed as hazardous and some will be liquids or dry materials which may be flammable.
Specific examples of duties will include, but are not limited to:
Pole hauling and removal
Bulldozer and grader service
Other tasks and assignments as directed
Perform assigned work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with Company practices and procedures
This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
