The Plate Shop Second Class Mechanic performs a variety of skilled mechanical duties involving burning, cutting plates, rip-outs and installations. The Second Class Mechanic operates equipment necessary for adequate plate cutting and burning; records work performed; follows specified safety policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities & Functional
This list is representative of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of a second class burner in the Plate shop. A second class mechanic must demonstrate an intermediate knowledge of the skills, functional knowledge and abilities required to perform tasks in these and related areas of responsibility.
Intermediate knowledge means that the mechanic understands how to perform tasks in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific tasks identified below) and is able to complete them independently, without assistance. This also means that the mechanic has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment, protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks.
o Basic knowledge of burning
o Use hook up torch/light torch
o Complete basic cutting plate jobs
o Wash the weld out to reuse plates
- Cutting Plates
o Knowledge of the following types of plating material: steel, copper nickel, aluminum, stainless steel
o Knowledge of the different plate material and how to cut plates from 3/16th inch to 1 inch in thickness
o Cut straight plates
o Complete cutouts for access's
o Work with HY80 – Alloy Steel
A second class burner must pass a demonstrated burning test.
- Operate a cutting torch to dismantle railcars.
The Burner reports to the Facilities & Operations Manager. The Burner is responsible for preparing purchased scrap through use of a burning torch, while ensuring that all of his/her efforts are compliant with the company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. The Burner must possess knowledge of and be capable of wearing a respirator.
This position operates under flexible parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the position. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increase profits.
Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)
Strictly adheres to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
Provides a safe environment for all employees, customers and visitors.
Operational Performance & Best Business Practices
Examines unprepared scrap to ensure conformance with company standards. If scrap does not meet specifications, burner must cut scrap utilizing appropriate tools and equipment.
Maintains a torching environment conducive to fire control, and is able to seek additional assistance if first efforts fail.
Equipment & Maintenance
Detects faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notifies proper supervisors to ensure repair.
Consistently operates cutting torches, regulators, torch tops, cleaners, hose removal and installation tools, water hoses, and occasionally operates oxygen lances.
Internal Control Responsibilities
Supports the Company's Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business. Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
This position does not encompass any supervisory responsibilities.
Direct contact with Facilities & Operations Manager, and operations production employees. Communicates via face-to-face interaction.
This position is regularly exposed to all weather conditions. Physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt are present due to the equipment, machinery, and scrap as would be found throughout the scrap yard.
Safety shoes, hearing protection, respirators, and face shields must be worn to eliminate the risks associated with these hazards. Travel is not required for this position.
Handling multiple issues regarding safety and maintenance increases pressure. Work load may be unpredictable and pressure can be substantial during peak times.
Critical deadlines require considerable adaptability. Disturbances of work flow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Extra hours may be required, sometimes on weekends, weekdays, and holidays.
Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions
Ability to: lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally; crouch or bend at the knees occasionally to increase visibility; stoop or bend at the waist occasionally to increase visibility; reach at arms length frequently or overhead occasionally; twist and turn at the neck and trunk; walk frequently on uneven ground; handle and grasp a torch continually; communicate by speech and hearing continually. Visual acuity needed for close detail work. Mental dexterity needed as burner will work independently while demonstrating attention to detail and continuous awareness.
High School diploma or GED Certification required. Candidates with steady work/school attendance and dependability may also be considered.
Torching experience or the ability to learn the torching proficiency preferred. This position requires possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to drive an automobile.

Burner - FT 2Nd Shift 1:30Pm - 10:00Pm
The Burner is responsible for setting the direction and overall production of the SMR Department. The Burner is responsible for reading production schedules and reviewing and following all priority lists.
The Burner is responsible for pulling and maintaining the film used in the burn room and for ensuring the quality of all screens meets GSP and industry specifications prior use. The Burner is responsible for pasting up film onto the screens and burning the screen images for the Print Department. They are also responsible for reading and following all instructions on the work order including reviewing the film for text errors prior to burning.
The Burner is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the burn room and that equipment is maintained. The Burner will all assist with training and coaching of others as required.
Verify priorities on Production schedules or hot lists
Pull film into the burn room for burning
Check all screens before burning to ensure the quality of all screens meets GSP and industry specifications
Reviewing the film for text errors prior to burning
Paste up and burn film onto screen
Fill out Quality tags on every screen
Log and file all film that is burnt
Wash out all screens after burning
Put all burned/washed out screens in the proper spotting racks
Clean glass on burn table
Replenish all supplies used in the burn room area prior to the end of each shift
Communicate technical issues or problems to supervisor and or print manager
Maintain cleanliness in the burn area
Complete daily & weekly paperwork as required
Assist in other areas of SMR as required
Practical Screen printing Production Experience
Technical knowledge of burning equipment
Work well a team environment to ensure productivity and quality
Must have strong leadership skills
Must have a high standard for quality assurance.
Strong priority and time management skills
Minimum position requirements:
High School diploma or GED
Ability to communicate (read, speak, write) in English
Minimum 2 years Screen Print or SMR experience
Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs
Available for weekend work shifts and overtime
Burner Management Systems (Bms) Specialist
This person will require strong working knowledge of related NFPA and API codes and standards (NFPA 85, 86, 87; API 538, 538, 14C; ASME CSD-1; B149.3, etc.)
All applicants must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience), a minimum of 8 years of experience within the Process Safety field, with significant exposure to the design and control of Burner Management Systems. Knowledge of the operation and control of single-fuel, multiple-fuel, gas-fired, liquid-fired, coal-fired, etc. burners highly preferred.
Highly qualified applicants will be licensed Professional Engineers (P.E.s) and will be Certified Functional Safety Experts (CFSEs) or TUV Functional Safety Engineers. This position should expect 50% travel, and will require a valid Driver's License.

Burner (Industrial Oxy-Fuel Cutting Torch Operator) - 2Nd Shift
Summary: Removes excess material from castings with an oxy fuel cutting torch. Once trained, this position will work our 2nd shift, which is normally 3pm-11pm.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Uses a oxy-fuel cutting torch to remove all risers, gates, and fins safely, efficiently, and without gouging the casting, cutting up to 24" thick sections.
Communicates to supervision quality and equipment problems.
Inspects equipment daily.
Follows job work instructions and training matrix, where applicable.

Basic summary of the job: Operates CNC burning equipment to produce burned parts according to preprogrammed dimensions, meeting quality and quantity standards on a consistent basis.
Essential (primary) functions:
Gathers materials required to fill work orders, sets up burning tables with materials
Operates CNC burning equipment based on programs supplied by the Production programmer
Assures proper operation of equipment by monitoring quality of parts produced and conducting 1st Article procedures
Assures materials exiting burning machines meet drawing requirements and quality standards
Package and mark materials as necessary
May stage materials properly to assure loaders can efficiently lift and load materials
Reports accidents, injuries and incidents immediately to the supervisor
Responsible for assuring productivity standards are consistently met

Responsible for maintaining an orderly work area around utilized machines, drop areas and material staging areas
