Georgia Power's Network Underground Services (NUS) plays an integral part in Georgia's economy. NUS provides construction & maintenance services for the network underground electrical systems located in Metro Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah, Macon, Columbus, Athens, Valdosta and other spot Network Systems throughout Georgia. We provide a highly reliable electric service to High Profile Customers such as high-rise buildings, hospitals, government agencies, large businesses, etc. that are located within our service territory across the state. There are three (3) vacancies in Atlanta. Our Apprentice Cable Splicer (ACS) positions are based out of Atlanta, Augusta and Savannah. Your ability to work in one of these three areas could be a factor in any hiring decisions. Flexibility in desired work locations is essential for progression through the Apprentice Cable Splicer Development Program. All candidates must be available to work within a certain distance of their assigned operating headquarters (upon hire). No relocation assistance is available.
Summary of Position Duties
The ACS will assist with the construction & maintenance of the network underground systems and other hi-rely distribution systems across the state of Georgia. You will learn the construction and maintenance activities associated with our Network & Hi-rely Distribution systems, as well as operating procedures for all equipment involved in the process, including cranes, lifts, aerial devices, and cable pulling equipment. The ability to work on our system in enclosed spaces such as manholes, vaults & tunnels where entry requires access by ladders plus the ability to work at heights in lifts, buckets, scaffolds, etc. is required. The ability to work in these environments and feel comfortable doing so is critical to the success in the program. The most important thing you will learn is how to safely perform every task while providing a quality product in an efficient manner.
Training: The Apprentice Cable Splicer (ACS) position was developed as a part of the Cable Splicer Development Program (CSDP). The CSDP is an extensive training program combining skills training, classroom training, and on-the-job training. The successful completion of the 4-year CSDP program is required to become a Journeyman Cable Splicer with Georgia Power. You will receive training in the installation, splicing and terminating of various electrical cables that include, but not limited to, 3 phase Paper-Insulated Lead Cable (PILC), Cross Linked Polyethylene Cable (XLP), EPR, etc.
Education and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent is required.
Candidates must have a basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background.
Minimum of 1 year of work experience in construction, heavy industrial maintenance, utility, military and/or electrical experience is preferred.
Experience working outdoors, with heavy equipment/machinery, heavy load rigging/lifting, emergency responders, commercial truck driving, and/or farming is a plus.
Candidates who have Network or Distribution underground experience are strongly desired.
Candidates who have military experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Basic mechanical aptitude and knowledge of hand tools.
Proven ability to read, understand & follow procedures, rules, and regulations.
Demonstrated strong customer service skills.
Candidate must be able to work in enclosed spaces such as manholes, vaults & tunnels where entry requires access by ladders plus the ability to work at heights in lifts, buckets, scaffolds, etc. is required.
Ability to take instruction, direction and translate into actions.
Able to perform physically demanding activities while working outside in all weather conditions and elements.
Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a team environment.

Prior to being invited to an interview, candidates must pass a pre-employment written exam (CAST Test). The CAST test includes Graphic Arithmetic, Mathematical usage, Mechanical Concepts and Reading Comprehension. In addition, candidates must pass a Physical Abilities Test (PAT). The PAT includes (but not limited to): manually digging a hole, carrying a ladder, climbing a pole, raising a weight, and driving a pencil bar. If invited, these events will require candidates to travel to a designated location in Georgia (most likely in the Atlanta area). Candidates will not be paid for time or travel to complete these pre-employment tests.
Because of the nature of our work and weight restrictions on our equipment a candidate must CURRENTLY weigh (and maintain their body weight) AT or BELOW 270 pounds -fully dressed including steel-toed work boots and hardhat.
Due to the physical demands of this position, candidates must be able to lift and drag equipment weighing 50-pounds or more.
Candidates must be able to frequently work in extreme weather conditions throughout the entire year. All climatic conditions will be experienced in these positions (heat, cold, rain, snow/ice, etc.).
Candidates must be available for "call out" duties which will require being available and accessible in times of Storm emergencies at least 50% of the times requested, including overnight and out of state travel. This could also include working evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
A thorough background check and DOT drug screen (including nicotine) will be conducted prior to employment (after a job offer is extended). In addition, you must successfully meet requirements for a Pre-Employment (DOT) physical exam approved by our company physician.
Pay: This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between GPC and IBEW Local 84. Union membership is optional. Current starting pay for ALL NEW HIRES is $4,783/month or approximately $27.59/hour. Apprentice Cable Splicer candidates who receive job offers will be hired at this rate, regardless of experience/skills. This rate is non-negotiable.

Cable Splicers are responsible for splicing high voltage and secondary network systems (power cables used in underground distribution) and street lighting systems. This position installs, maintains and repairs electrical wiring systems. The work requires an expert knowledge of electricity and electrical theory, the methods and tools used in cable splicing, and safety rules and procedures. The ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematic drawings and to use specialized hand and power tools is also required.
This position will report to the Network Crew Chief/Supervisor and will report out of the North Service Center.
Splices, maintains and terminates all types of high and low voltage power cables (lead-covered, gas-filled, oil-filled, etc.).
Pulls, racks and secures high and low voltage cables in manholes, conduit, tunnels, vaults and other installations.
Installs, maintains, repairs and removes high and low voltage conductors, transformers, network protectors, relays, switches, junction boxes and related electrical equipment.
Installs, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs electrical equipment required for spot network distribution systems in high-rise buildings.
Locates and repairs electrical faults in underground network distribution systems, substations and other distribution systems.
Installs, reroutes, maintains and repairs street lighting systems and equipment.
Bends, installs, maintains and repairs all types of conduits.
Works with distribution system maps, feeder maps, and cut sheets to perform switching and tagging for power dispatchers to de-energize lines.
Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs protection systems, such as fire, anti-corrosion, and cathodic protection systems.
Performs high voltage D.C. tests on power cables and equipment.
Inspects work done by private contractors.
Performs other duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Demand:
Works outdoors in all types of weather.
Works with energized equipment and cables in confined areas, at heights, and in heavy traffic.
Works with toxic/hazardous substances and molten lead and insulating compounds heated to 700º F.
Work requires extended periods of physical exertion, including lifting and manipulating objects that weigh more than 50 pounds.
May work nights, weekends and holidays.
Education: Successful completion of a cable splicer or relevant electrical trades apprenticeship program.
Experience: Requires three years of experience in the electrical trades working under the supervision of a journey level Cable Splicer with at least one year on a cable splicing crew (or a combination of education and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Certification/License: Current Washington State driver's license.
4 years or more of journey level Cable Splicer experience.

To be successful in this role you must have the ability to work ANY SHIFT anywhere within FPL’s service territory in Florida. MAJOR FUNCTION Install and maintain electric underground distribution circuits requiring the skill of lead cable splicing. Also performs overhead line work and work associated with transmission and distribution substations as required. Receives work direction and review from Substation Foreman, Line Supervisors and Substation and Underground Supervisor.
Must have a high school diploma or GED.
Must be a Journeyman Lineman.
Must successfully complete the Lead Cable Splicer Training Program and become certified with eighteen (18) months.
Must have a Class A CDL.
This position will require a post offer, pre-placement physical capacity screening, conducted by a licensed physical therapist, to assure the candidate meets the physical demands of the job. The screening will assess only the identified physical demands of the job being applied for. This may not be required for internal applicants who have completed a physical capacity screening meeting the same criteria.
Physical Demands The job duties of Lineman require lifting in excess of 75 lbs from floor to waist and waist to overhead, carrying in excess of 75 lbs with both hands, and pushing and pulling in excess of 100 lbs of exertional force. Job duties of the Lineman require sustained, awkward positions/postures including bending and twisting at the waist and neck; reaching forward, to the side, across the body and overhead. Additional requirements of the Lineman position include forceful grip and pinch; manipulation of small objects; balancing on one or both legs during dynamic activities; manipulation of large objects during activities requiring balance and sustained awkward postures.

A Coax Fiber Splicer is responsible for splicing new build and/or upgrade coaxial cable plant. This position requires frequent travel in which the employee would be away from home.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Place and install coaxial cable
Install passive/active devices, pedestals, vaults or coax splice cases
Splice active and passive CATV equipment
Rough balance and troubleshoot coaxial cable plant
Read blueprints, CATV design maps and basic electronic designs
Operate aerial lift and other related equipment to perform job functions
Frequently communicate with management on workload status
May occasionally perform routine construction work such as pulling rope/cables, climbing ladders, using hand tools, digging with a shovel, etc.
Accurately complete all required company documentation for each assignment according to established company standards and procedures (ie timesheet, truck report, expense report)
Responsible for assigned company vehicle, tools, materials and equipment
Perform work in a safe manner and comply with all established company safety policies and procedures
Perform other duties and tasks as assigned in order to help team complete a project
Required Education and Experience
Minimum of 2 years' experience splicing aerial and underground coaxial cable
High school diploma or GED
Experience working in a bucket truck at heights in excess of 30-40 ft.
Proficiency using related splicing equipment
Experience reading system design maps, fiber schematics, blueprints and basic electronic designs
Have a general understanding of RF and Fiber-Optic technologies
Ability to distinguish between colors
Must possess exceptional organizational skills and be detailed oriented
Must be able to occasionally move materials/equipment weighing up to 80 pounds
Ability to maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic that can provide high productivity with minimal supervision
Preferred Education and Experience
- 4+ years of experience splicing Coaxial Cable
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Ability to pass a criminal background screen and drug test
While performing this job, the employee will be stand, walk, handle or operate objects, tools or controls
Work will be performed in an outdoor environment
Often work will be performed near busy highways and streets
