As a Cable Splicing Technician you'll add, place, remove, reroute, set up, rack, splice, transfer, repair, rearrange, bond, pressurize, and test aerial, underground, and buried cable. You'll also mount, cut-in, and repair cable terminal and load cases. Rearrange service drops, aerial and buried jumper wire and step poles. Test, locate and repair defects in wires for copper cables and fibers for fiber optic cables, using electrical and mechanical testing apparatus.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Read and interpret engineering plans, vendor specifications for the installation and repair of optic and electronic equipment, and interacting with the Engineering Group.
Make necessary preparations required for splicing, rearranging and terminate cable conductors. Perform splicing operations in connection with the installation, rearrangement, and repair of outside plant facilities. This includes fiber/copper cable, wire, terminals, loop carrier electronics and light guide facilities and various fiber optic applications which may be aloft, underground, or buried.
Locate and clear troubles in outside plant facilities (copper and/or fiber).
Determine air flow and pressure in cables – aerial and underground. Preparing cables for pressurization and maintaining cable pressure.
Using test equipment to check for gas in manholes and may have to empty water from manholes.
Occasionally work with torches and lead sleeves and iron cases. Place and remove protective covering over sheath openings.
Work aloft; climb ladders and poles; enter tunnels, buildings, trenches, crawl spaces, manholes, and other confined spaces to accomplish job tasks.
May work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Perform light digging operations as required.
Operate and maintain necessary trucks and equipment needed to perform work operations in a safe manner. Includes operating aerial lifts (buckets) and hydraulic lift ladders mounted on trucks.
Test, locate and repair defects in wires for copper cables and fibers for fiber optic cables and digital carrier systems, using electrical and mechanical testing apparatus.
Install, repair, inspect and maintain inside cables, wires and plug-in equipment to connect telecommunication systems and equipment, including dark fiber and fiber and/or equipment including but not limited to routers, video set-top boxes and PC related hardware.
Promote the sale of services and products which the company is permitted to provide.
Contact customers face-to-face to notify them of work being performed on their lines, and when service is restored. Also communicates Company policy and bills customer when appropriate.
Read and interpret vendor specifications for optic and electronic equipment. Identifying and meeting individual customer requirements on provisioning and/or repair contacts.
Identify data base discrepancies by performing proactive preventive maintenance and providing corrected information to appropriate individuals.
Daily completion of all related administrative paperwork, time sheets, DOT log, etc.
Basic computer skills, working with customers' computer and equipment.
Perform additional duties and tasks as required by the Company.
Must meet required test results for this position in accordance with company policy.
Must meet Verizon medical standards for the job. Must meet weight restrictions to comply with OSHA/Company safety standards.
Ability to perceive differences in wire and cable colors.
Must be able to move and/or lift items such as ladders, cable and other objects weighing up to 100 pounds; wear a tool belt and work aloft.
A valid state driver's license is required. Must have ability to drive a vehicle with manual gearshift and meet applicable federal and state standards for operating the size vehicles covered by this job title. Where a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required, you must pass an alcohol and drug test. Where a CDL is required, you will receive related, company-provided Department of Transportation (D.O.T) training. Upon completion of D.O.T training, you must qualify on D.O.T's CDL written and skills qualifications tests to retain the job.
A Security background investigation may be required.
Job site visits will generally be granted only where a contractual obligation exists.

There are three (3) vacancies in Atlanta. Our Apprentice Cable Splicer (ACS) positions are based out of Atlanta, Augusta and Savannah. Your ability to work in one of these three areas could be a factor in any hiring decisions. Flexibility in desired work locations is essential for progression through the Apprentice Cable Splicer Development Program. All candidates must be available to work within a certain distance of their assigned operating headquarters (upon hire). No relocation assistance is available.
Summary of Position Duties
The ACS will assist with the construction & maintenance of the network underground systems and other hi-rely distribution systems across the state of Georgia. You will learn the construction and maintenance activities associated with our Network & Hi-rely Distribution systems, as well as operating procedures for all equipment involved in the process, including cranes, lifts, aerial devices, and cable pulling equipment. The ability to work on our system in enclosed spaces such as manholes, vaults & tunnels where entry requires access by ladders plus the ability to work at heights in lifts, buckets, scaffolds, etc. is required. The ability to work in these environments and feel comfortable doing so is critical to the success in the program. The most important thing you will learn is how to safely perform every task while providing a quality product in an efficient manner.
Training: The Apprentice Cable Splicer (ACS) position was developed as a part of the Cable Splicer Development Program (CSDP). The CSDP is an extensive training program combining skills training, classroom training, and on-the-job training. The successful completion of the 4-year CSDP program is required to become a Journeyman Cable Splicer with Georgia Power. You will receive training in the installation, splicing and terminating of various electrical cables that include, but not limited to, 3 phase Paper-Insulated Lead Cable (PILC), Cross Linked Polyethylene Cable (XLP), EPR, etc.
Education and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent is required.
Candidates must have a basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background.
Minimum of 1 year of work experience in construction, heavy industrial maintenance, utility, military and/or electrical experience is preferred.
Experience working outdoors, with heavy equipment/machinery, heavy load rigging/lifting, emergency responders, commercial truck driving, and/or farming is a plus.
Candidates who have Network or Distribution underground experience are strongly desired.
Candidates who have military experience is a plus.

Due to the physical demands of this position, candidates must be able to lift and drag equipment weighing 50-pounds or more.
Candidates must be able to frequently work in extreme weather conditions throughout the entire year. All climatic conditions will be experienced in these positions (heat, cold, rain, snow/ice, etc.).
Candidates must be available for "call out" duties which will require being available and accessible in times of Storm emergencies at least 50% of the times requested, including overnight and out of state travel. This could also include working evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

The Engineering Manager for the Cable Systems Division is responsible for the management and execution of assigned product programs in North America and also supports the effort to develop new business with assistance of the Segment & Sales Group. Will coordinate and monitor technical matters, program engineering costs, sufficient labor, timing for engineering deliverables, and the like to ensure successful development and launch of assigned products. The Engineering Manager will provide technical direction to the various engineering levels together with cross-functional departments. The Engineering Manager will have a direct responsibility to report the health of all programs from design through launch to both the Product Engineering Director and the Regional Chief Engineer.
Execute all engineering deliverables of a customer/engineering program.
Provide technical support and assistance to the Engineers and Engineering Supervisors. The Engineering Manager is to be a mentor for all assigned personnel.
Assure that the Dura APQP process is being followed by all assigned personnel.
Assure that DFA/DFM meetings are scheduled and designs adapted to meet product manufacturability.

Assist the Sales & Segment group in winning new business by:
Supplying input to define the product that will meet all customer requirements for content and performance
Supporting customer specific meetings during the RFE process
Working with other cross-functional groups to develop a cost model that supports the winning of new business.
Interface with Program Management and Sales groups to agree upon engineering resource levels required to satisfy the SOR, per the APQP process.
