This is an introductory biology course designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the structure, physiology, growth, development, and reproduction of flowering plants. The gross morphology and microscopic anatomy of stems, roots, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds are discussed with the emphasis on the diversity of plants. Students will develop specific skills needed to successfully propagate and maintain healthy plants.
CBIOL 2211 Cell and Molecular Biology, Days and times TBA
In Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) students delve into the details of the fundamental, essential components of life, examining their structures, functions and interactions. Focusing on the basic unit of life, the cell, this course will reveal the microscale and nanoscale workings of organisms; students will learn how cells make proteins starting with genetic information, produce and utilize energy, import and export materials, communicate with other cells and more.
Cell and Molecular Biology entails a comprehensive view of cellular anatomy, which comprises the foundation of fields such as developmental biology, immunology, pharmacology, cancer biology, endocrinology and neuroscience?fields in which students mastering CMB concepts will readily be able to pursue studies. Through this course, students will gain familiarity with fundamental concepts in molecular cell biology that will enable them to understand and further explore a variety of recent developments and future directions in biological research, their applications and implications. By examining basic biological phenomena (e.g.
DNA replication, enzymatic catalysis, intracellular transport) at the cellular and molecular levels, students will gain a vital, fine-grained perspective of the myriad processes and interactions that comprise life. Sometimes described as the most complex object in the known universe, the human brain is incredibly unique among anatomical structures and comprised of myriad regions each with their own haracteristic capabilities that together engage in dynamic interplay that makes the richness of human experience possible. In this course, we will examine the structure and function of numerous regions comprising the human brain and the nervous system.
Beginning with a brief review of the basic unit of the nervous system, the neuron, we will delve into the details of what collections of neurons do in specific areas of the brain. Through this course, students will gain familiarity with a wide variety of neuroanatomical structures that will enable them to understand and further explore a variety of recent developments and future directions in neuroscience research, their applications and implications. By examining basic biological phenomena (e.g. action potentials, neurotransmitter binding, response to stress) at the molecular, cellular, tissue, organ and behavioral levels, diligent students will gain a framework for (1) reading a range of primary source materials in the field of neuroscience, (2) exploring and analyzing news stories about developments related to the field, (3) conversing with scientists conducting research and (4) undertaking basic research projects in the form of internships or entry-level research positions.

- Administration of the Oracle database that supports the app.
