Central Texas Veterans Health Care System is currently recruiting for a Physician, Associate Chief of Staff for Education/Designated Education Officer (ACOS/DEO). Board-certified physician with a minimum of 5 years' experience in the management of graduate and undergraduate medical educational programing. This position will be responsible for all health professions training as an education leader in providing oversight of all trainees, including graduate medical; undergraduate medical; undergraduate and graduate nursing; graduate social work, blind rehabilitation, psychology; management of all affiliation agreements with colleges, universities, and graduate schools; oversight of all educational activities at CTVHCS to include medical grand rounds, CME and CEU offerings, VHA Talent Management stem, review of all speakers and curricula of formal CTVHCS educational activities.
The ACOS/E must work closely with the Facility Director and Chief of Staff to provide guidance and counsel on incorporating education compliance activities into the day-to-day operations of the facility. Additional duties may include formal didactic sessions; educational activities; research; literature searches; assigned independent study; attendance at committee meetings (e.g., quality improvement or pharmacy committees; participation in root cause analysis teams; and scholarly activities as part of an accredited training program; and approved educational details. The ACOS/E must be able to interface in a positive and collegial manner with high ranking officials of the CTVHCS academic and clinical partners while ensuring that compliance with VA regulations and handbooks is maintained and VA interests are always primary.
The ACOS/E is expected to work closely with these partners and the local community to support community, region and statewide educational efforts that mutually benefit VA and the community. The ACOS/E also has oversight of all CTVHCS simulation activities, Veterans Health Education efforts, and processing and oversight of all students who train within CTVHCS. Currently, CTVHCS oversees over 2000 non-physician trainees and over 350 medical residents receive training at CTVHCS.
Trainees also rotate in Waco, Cedar Park, and soon in Bryan/College Station. Regular travel is required to interface with Medical Schools and oversee growing medical education programs. The ACOS/E must also meet regularly with officials of Texas A&M, Dell Medical School, and Baylor Scott and White, the major educational partner in Temple for CTVHCS.
The ACOS/E must be able to interface easily and smoothly with medical school Deans, Vice- or Associate/Assistant Deans, and department chairs. The ACOS/E if responsible for a medical resident education budget of $10M. The ACOS/E must possess academic credentials such that the incumbent can be appointed at the rank of Associate Professor/Professor or Clinical Professor/Clinical Associate Professor, depending upon the academic partner.
