This class inspects permitted sites in area of specialty to ensure permit, code, and regulatory compliance, provides compliance information to permit holder, and reports any findings with recommendations for permit hold/withdrawal. Work is performed under the general direction of a Chief Construction Supervisor.
A non-certified Construction Inspector's rate of pay is $12.49; must be able to obtain a provisional Building Inspector certification within 90 days of employment and the State certification within one year of employment.
This is a "mandatory-testing" position that requires Drug Testing.
Examples of Duties:
Inspects construction projects and properties to observe compliance with applicable construction plans, specifications, and codes; reads and interprets construction plans and specifications; resolves issues between contractors and owners by providing code explanations related to inspections and/or construction plans or drawings.
Prepares and/or completes variety of forms, lists, stop work notices, and/or other related items; disseminates information to appropriate individuals.
Receives and responds to questions and/or complaints from a variety of individuals and/or businesses regarding codes and regulations, inspection schedules, inspection results, and code compliance requirements.
Prepares and maintains construction and building inspection results by entering data into a permit tracking system, files and logs; prepares related reports.
Attends a variety of meetings related to construction projects and/or progress.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and five years of experience in the building construction field; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Valid driver's license
Standard Building Code Inspector certification is preferred

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to:
Perform a full range of inspection and evaluation of residential and non-residential buildings and structures (which may include complex structural and non-structural components, including plumbing, mechanical, and electrical and fire protection systems) for compliance with the appropriate codes, other applicable regulations, and approved plans and specifications.
Assist and advise the general public in matters relating to residential and commercial construction and code requirements
Investigate complaints and make inspections of existing buildings to determine if hazardous or illegal conditions exist relating to residential and commercial buildings and their use.
Prepare written reports; maintain records; issues notices to correct code violations and testify in court regarding violations.
Read, research, and objectively explain and interpret building code requirements along with other laws pertaining to regulation of buildings, and tactfully communicate, orally and in writing, with the general public, while maintaining effective relationships.
Independently recognize, evaluate and properly resolve unique problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.
Assist construction industry representatives and general public with permit needs.
Perform various office and other duties as assigned; conduct business license reviews.
Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor
Job Qualifications and Education
Minimum acceptable education and experience:
Any combination of education or experience normally equivalent to:
Education – A high school diploma or equivalent, preferably supplemented by additional training in building inspection, structural engineering, or a related field. An Associate Degree in engineering, architecture, building inspection or related field a plus.
Must have at least two (2) years' experience as a building inspector.
Knowledge, Abilities, and
Must possess and maintain ICC Building Code certifications including building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical.
Must have a valid Driver's License
Knowledge of construction regulations as applicable.
Works primarily in an outdoor environment which includes construction/project sites and requires moving about safely; climbing ladders, walking on uneven surfaces; stooping, crawling, working in difficult weather conditions (hot and cold), working in confined areas; and working around various construction equipment. Office duties include sitting for periods of time.
