Description/Job SummaryJob Overview The General Maintenance Worker Apprentice will fix and maintain machines, mechanical equipment, and buildings. This individual will paint, repair flooring, and work on plumbing, electrical, and air-conditioning and heating systems. In the event of an emergency he/she may be called to support necessary tasks in association with that emergency. The successful candidate shall assist in lay-out, installation, assembly and erection of steel components in accordance with plans, specifications, codes and industry standards. Work in other crafts at levels appropriate to training and skills as requested by project supervisor
Use appropriate hand (i.e. hammer, wrench, socket-wrench) and power tools (i.e. cutting torch, air- trigger) to assist ironworker to properly measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble and erect steel and help install all other related items in accordance with the applicable plans and specifications.
Assist in shakeout of steel into erectable sequence; rig steel members for crane hoisting. Develop thorough knowledge of crane signals; help connect steel members, bolt up connectors, rack structure, plumb and square; torque bolts as directed by ironworker. Assist in guiding members into position using tag lines; help verify vertical and horizontal alignment of member using plumb bob and level; assist in cutting and welding members for alterations.
Education, Experience or Formal Training: Learn and develop knowledge of structural welding, use of cutting torches and working knowledge of all aspects of the ironworkers craft. Ability to understand and follow directions.
Working Environment & Physical Demands: Ability to work in conditions common to a construction site including but not limited to rain, sleet, snow, dust, mud, heat, sun, cold, noise. Ability to work irregular hours, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to work up to a 12-hour shift. Ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds. Climb and maintain balance on formwork, steel framework, stairs, ladders and scaffolds.
Move in and around confined and cluttered places, and uneven areas. Possess full range of motion and flexibility.
