The Mechanical Department is in charge of all rolling stock, which includes 150 locomotives, 845 coach cars, 186 highliners, and 530+ fleet vehicles. The Mechanical Department ensures that rolling stock operates safely, effectively, and efficiently throughout the Metra System. Mechanical Department performs all Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) inspection, including daily, quarterly, semiannual, annual, Tri-annual, quad, etc., and provides daily cleaning services of all rolling stock. In addition, the Department purchases new equipment, rehabilitates, perform modification, maintenance, and wreck repairs, to all rolling stock to help improve state of good repair and on-time performance. Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field from a recognized college or university OR, in lieu of specified degree, any combination of education and experience may be substituted for the required degree that equals four (4) years’ experience in mechanical engineering in a manufacturing or railroad environment.
In addition to #1, must have four (4) years’ experience in a manufacturing or railroad environment as a railroad journeyman.
Must have knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
Must be able to demonstrate a "functional skill set" including knowledge of builders’ schematics / diagrams / and repairs as well as troubleshooting and maintaining rolling stock and facilities.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a demanding environment.
Ability to complete assigned projects and produce various reports to illustrate results using Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, Access, and Outlook.
Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
Ability to gain cooperation from individuals and organizations is an essential component of this position.
Must obtain 49CFR part 238 certification within 60 days of hire.

Description: Construction Inspector and Senior Inspector - immediate openings in the Richmond area for qualified transportation Construction Inspectors and Senior Inspectors, including on VDOT, locality, and Design-Build projects.
The Inspector is responsible for managing and performing daily construction management and inspection services for various types of VDOT and locality transportation projects. Must have significant experience in roadway/bridge construction, have VDOT certifications, be proficient at reading and interpreting plans, specifications, and shop drawings as well as overseeing construction document controls and enforcing contract compliance.
Duties- Duties and responsibilities may include: construction management; performing field inspection of Contractor's operations to see that they comply with contract documents; preparing daily and weekly reports on work accomplished by Contractor; performing materials testing and maintaining testing logs; reviewing periodic pay estimates for accuracy with Contractor; preparing sketches and assembling data for Engineer's use in making changes to the project; keeping diaries and making reports on work accomplished and/or noted deficiencies; performing sophisticated, complicated mathematical calculations; reviewing Contractor schedules including initial CPM and monthly updates; communicating effectively with the Engineer, Owner and Owner's operational and field staff on a regular basis, keeping them apprised of field conditions and maintaining active communications and excellent rapport with the Owner and the entire project team throughout the construction process.
