#2 Shift Manufacturing Specialist - Carbon Composites

The Carbon Pattern Manufacturing Specialist coordinates, plans and organizes the manufacture of carbon composite brake patterns to contractual specifications with optimum use of available resources and achieving Company objectives.
The incumbent is responsible for the quality and quality of work produced in the area of a 24/7 operation. This role is specifically to support #2 shift on Tue-Wed-Thu-Fri-Sat. Additionally, responsible for maintaining tools, equipment and facilities to the level required for safe and efficient operation, and ensuring the general work area is kept clean and safe at all times. They are also responsible for personnel issues of subordinates (absenteeism, conflict resolution, performance appraisals, etc), participating in the development of plans to meet department goals, improving work methods, motivating employees, training employees and properly assigning resources for optimum efficiency.
This position requires knowledge of carbon processing procedures, inspection standards, processing equipment, tools, facilities and computer systems/software.
Job Core Responsibilities
Organize personnel to maximize all available resources to keep manufacturing cost low while maintaining superior quality and delivery.
Achieve all production objectives through proper planning and resource assignment.
Maintain a safe and clean working environment that will ensure the safety and general welfare of the employees.
Manage production in order to provide high quality products that meet or exceed specifications.
Work with other Manufacturing Specialists to efficiently plan resources (equipment, manpower and information) for 24/7 operations.
Foster sound labor relations needed to achieve the goals and objectives of the Company.
Ensure all operating supplies are readily available in order to meet production requirements. This includes thermocouples, lampblack, rigid graphite felt, process gasses, furnace filters, etc.
Create, compile and organize processing data within computer systems and hard copy files.
Manage and coordinate shipping and receiving of raw materials, supplies and finiahsed products into and out of the plant.
Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.
Regular, consistent and punctual attendance is required. May need to work variable schedule(s) and additional hours as necessary.
Other responsibilities as assigned.
Education : Post-Secondary degree (Associate degree) in Technology, Manufacturing Management or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience that will allow successful performance of job expectation. For example, significant experience in manufacturing technology, CNC machining, testing/development laboratory or heat treat/processing of carbon composite materials.
Years Experience : Minimum of 3 years manufacturing supervisory experience and/or experience in the manufacture of carbon composites.
Solid experience in production support, leading a team of staff members
Ability to plan, set priorities for the team and direct technical efforts to meet targets
Strong leadership and effective interpersonal skills
Able to use judgment to identify and resolve day-to-day technical and operational problems
Effective oral and written communication and attention to detail
Proficient in Microsoft Windows software applications
Experience in Lean/Continuous Improvement

Under general supervision and working in a loud environment with a variety of epoxy agents, this position performs a variety of non-routine and non-repetitive procedures and assists in the fabrication, curing, build-up and assembly of various types of composite materials where required information is readily available, methods and sequences have been pre-determined and tooling is provided. Works to blueprints, templates, sample parts, process sheets and other authorized information.
Build to specific dimensions and application of ply's, carbon pre-pregs
Build up free from wrinkles, air pockets, and voids
Use hand tools, such as rollers, paper cutters, scissors, x-acto knives, electric heat gun and fixtures such as molds and mandrels.
Use shop tools such as band saws, disk sanders, drill press, wood lathe, etc.
Perform material/part inspection
Generate non-conformance, material rejections, and corrective action reports
Check expiration dates of materials prior to use
Communicates material shortages and escalates, as required
Fit and smooth successive layers of materials as necessary following ply directives
Conduct Pre-and Post-Lamination check-list
Participate in weekly audits of quality systems and assist with new product introductions
Participate in AS 9100 Audits - answer auditors' questions
Provide sound technical input to technicians and engineering when issues arise
Participate in problem solving with Six Sigma Tools (DMAIC, SQDEC and LEAP boards)
Minimum 4+ years' recent related work experience
High School Diploma
May require respirator certification.
Ability to work 2ND or 3RD SHIFT
Must be able to work in a loud environment; work extended hours as required; and be able to lift assemblies weighing up to 50 lbs.
Capability of conducting mathematical calculations (MSP dimensions, Blue Print, Engineering Drawings)
Ability to use measuring instruments such as scales and calipers
Detailed experience with Blue Print reading
Experience working with graphite tools

Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities and duties:
Develop a research program meeting the following annual metrics:
3-5 external proposals as PI or Co-PI, and
1-2 peer reviewed journal or conference papers, and
2-5 graduate students advised, and
Active grants management
Serve as the manager for the Materials Characterization Lab (MCL) and the Environmental Analytical Research Lab (EARL). This role includes operating, maintaining and supervising advanced analytical equipment for teaching, research and contract activities. Current equipment in the lab includes flame AA, graphite furnace AA, total organic carbon analyzer for liquid and solid samples, ion chromatograph, XRF, core NMR, Nanoindentor, gamma ray logger, vitrinite reflectance, XRD, and SEM.
Train and supervise laboratory users. This includes assisting in the teaching courses on using the laboratory equipment, such as Geol 540: Water Sampling and Analysis , Geol 318: Mineralogy, Geol 320: Petrology, and PTRE 511: Advanced Petroleum Engineering Labs.
Supervise undergraduate and graduate research including serving as advisor on graduate student committees.
Provide support to Institute for Energy Studies researchers and other CEM faculty colleagues in writing high quality research grant proposals to attract and complete contract work.
BS or MS in Chemical Engineering / PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related field
Experience in operating at least 70% of the following equipment (flame AA, graphite furnace AA, total organic carbon analyzer for liquid and solid samples, ion chromatograph, XRF, NMR, gamma ray logger, vitrinite reflectance, XRD, and SEM)
Demonstrated experience in proposal writing and managing research grants

• Erodex is an independent family-owned precision engineering company with over 40 years of experience in the precision graphite tooling sector. The role is to be a founding member of a new precision manufacturing subsidiary, producing graphite and carbon parts for the aerospace industry and other sectors. You will work with class-leading CNC milling equipment to the very tightest tolerances, and support our key Rolls Royce account, and potentially other customers in the US.
• Specifically, the successful applicant will be a part of a new team of three engineers with responsibility for all machining; workflow and machining decisions within the cell.
