Grinder - 2Nd Shift
Job Title: Metal Parts Grinder – Swing Shift
Location: San Leandro, CA
To remove gating material, blend and grind casting surfaces to meet customer specifications.
1.Finish Grinding Objective: to grind and blend gating and defect areas on metal castings, and provide surface finishing within dimensional tolerances; to remove the minimum amount of metal necessary to remain within specified tolerances.
A. Reviews technique cards and blueprints to determine grinding requirements.
B. Determines stock removal requirements and tolerances for removal of gate material or other added metal stock.
C. Determines acceptance limits for grinding and blending defects.
D. Uses counter-balanced belt grinders, fixed grinders, held-held grinders, air tools, and hand tools including files and mirrors to grind and polish casting areas.
E. Wears required protective shields, clothing, wrist supports, glasses and gloves during grinding operations.
F. Visually inspects castings during grinding operations to assure compliance with specifications.
G. Makes dimensional measurements on specified parts to assure compliance with specifications; marks undersized areas for further inspection.
2.Safety Objective: to take responsibility for and demonstrate safe work practices.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- -Plans operations by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, and specifications.
- -Performs hands on manual grinding of metal and other manual tasks to deliver a component that conforms to the quality requirements specified by standard work instructions and part router.
- -Utilizes power driven hand tools, especially angle grinders and sanders on metalic surfaces. Also uses power driven drills, forklifts, trucks, and overhead cranes.
- -Reworks cosmetic defects per released procedures.
- -Loads parts, monitors, and operates automated processes.
- -Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
- -Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; and calling for repairs.
- -Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
- -Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.
- -Performs other duties and responsibilities as needed and assigned.

Reads blueprint for product specifications such as dimensions, tolerances, and number of parts to be ground, and determines what grinding wheel to be used
Sets up machine to control length of stroke and pattern
Starts machine and activates controls to feed wheel against work piece
Performs complex dressing of grinding wheels to accomplish blueprint specifications
Education and Experience Requirements
Previous experience working in an industrial environment (preferred)
Ability to read and understand work instructions and blueprints, plus follow verbal work instructions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Examines and feels surface of work piece for defects.
Removal of defects and/or sharp edges.
Selects grade of abrasive belt, wheel, or disk according to specifications, knowledge of abrasives, and condition of metal, and attaches to grinder.
Starts grinder and moves it over surface of work piece to remove scratches, laminated metal, excess weld material, and burs.
Polishes ground areas with finer abrasive to produce smooth, unmarred surface.
Replaces worn abrasive disks, wheels, and belts.
Maintains a safe and organized workstation and follows all company policy, safety and procedures
3 months related experience and/or training;

Parts must be made to print and process specifications.
Maintain and operate filtration system.
Responsible for own set-ups, and for inspecting own parts, including in-process inspection records.
Responsible for following safety rules, producing quality workmanship, and for good housekeeping in and around the work area.

Under limited supervision, maintain the high standards associated with Oberg Industries and produce accurate high-quality components by inspecting parts before grinding to check for chips or cracks, verify the dimensions of the work piece to match with the dimensions on the blueprints, inspect parts that are received from other departments, offer input on how to improve the operations, record how much time is spent on each job, inspect blue prints for inconsistencies as well as set-up and operate manual surface grinding equipment. Must be able to fixture and design methods of manufacturing complex parts and maintain a clean and orderly work area.
Physical demands of the job include working in a standing, sitting, or bent position for 10 hours/day and must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds with control, and be able to work near moving mechanical parts that create a moderately high noise level.
