The Tool and Die Maker constructs and repairs jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies or molds used in shaping or forming metal or nonmetallic material (e.g., plastic, plaster, rubber, glass). Work typically involves: planning and laying out work according to models, blueprints, drawings, or other written or oral specifications, understanding the working properties of common metals and alloys, selecting appropriate materials, tools, and processes required to complete task, making necessary shop computations, and setting up and operating various machine tools and related equipment. Work for someone in this position also involves using various Tool and Die Maker's hand tools and precision measuring instrument, working to very close tolerances, heat-treating metal parts and finished tools and dies to achieve required qualities, and fitting and assembling parts to prescribed tolerances and allowances. In general, the Tool and Die Maker's work requires rounded training in machine shop and tool room practice usually acquired through formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
Experience in modifying, editing, and troubleshooting CNC programs in GIBBS CAM software is required
Previous experience in machine shop environment working with 2, 3, and 5 axis milling machines or waterjet machines.
Laying out work according to models, blueprints, drawings, or other written or oral specifications.

The incumbent provides specific diversified components, tooling, and assemblies to meet engineering and testing requirements by planning and performing various complex and technical machine tool functions with limited supervision.
KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The position requires sufficient professional Tool Room experience of all machinery such that skills can be employed to perform complex layouts and machine tool setups for the purpose of producing, adjusting, repairing, heat-treating tools, dies, fixtures, gauges, and machine components of very tight tolerances. The incumbent must have an aptitude to learn Numeric Control (NC/CNC) or similar programming of complex machinery for the purpose of producing machined parts.
The position will primarily be responsible for test group machining support with limited supervision. Responsibilities include the ability to produce make-to-print items, assemble various tooling projects and electro-mechanical assemblies, and perform design/development on the fly without the aid of prints. The Test Group is a service organization; therefore, the incumbent must be able to setup and operate all Tool Room equipment with minimal (if any) assistance, must have a high level of communication to insure critical jobs are done as expected by the customer, and will be required to contribute to process/capital/tooling improvements necessary to maintain a viable Tool Room service.
Plans the correct material, equipment, tooling, and processes to produce make-to-print items.
Performs work required to produce/fit/repair items utilizing Tool Room equipment and processes.
Performs setup, operation, and troubleshooting of all Tool Room equipment with minimal limited supervision or guidance.
Determines parts and tools needed in order to achieve manufacturing goals with maximum efficiency.
Performs work that involves a high mental application and close visual attention for extended periods of time with the possibility of exposure to hazardous conditions.
Possesses an understanding of complex engineering product and assembly prints, mathematics up to and including advanced trigonometry, and basic electricity/electrical circuitry.
Possesses and utilizes strong methodical problem solving skills to drive to the root cause of issues and implementation of corrective actions (i.e., strong troubleshooting aptitude).
Communicates effectively with all stakeholders including plant personnel, engineers, maintenance, electricians, and machine builders.
Willing to travel within and outside the United States to perform said duties. Assists with everyday manufacturing support issues
Assist maintenance and engineering troubleshooting complex equipment. Provide training to maintenance and operators on equipment operation.
Create work instructions and training material for use by operators and maintenance.
Assist maintenance with predictive maintenance measures to improve equipment reliability.
Safety and Health – Responsible for completing required safety training, reporting and correcting any unsafe practices as appropriate, completing work activities in a safe manner, and complying with safety and health requirements for respective position.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Minimum Qualifications)
High School diploma or equivalent
4 years of extensive/specific skills training in the tool and die making field
8 years of Tool Room experience
Journeyman Trade Certificate through a qualified apprenticeship program is preferred
NC programming preferred
Prior experience in the automotive industry is preferred

Mold Maker - 1St Shift
Job Description: Summary

This position is responsible for supporting the Molding operation. Must have a basic knowledge of what a mold is and how it functions. This individual will collaborate and organize internal resources to complete mold maintenance work across business units in a timely and cost effective manner. Must have a big picture view of the molding operation to determine the urgency of work, understand a PM system and the ability to document and record critical data; must have a proven strong mechanical and technical background and the ability to troubleshoot and problem solve.
Must have the ability to run machine tools in the shop, (mills, lathes, grinders, torches, heat treat, saws, and CNC equipment) as well as thorough knowledge of steels and applications as well as a basic concept of electrical
Disassemble molds and determine parts needing to be repaired or replaced.
Clean mold plates and all components.
Check for proper gating, venting and cooling of mold.
Record and maintain all maintenance documentation as required.
Polish cavities and cores to specified finishes.
Must be able to troubleshoot and analyze problems with molds.
Read and understand blueprints, sketches, and schematics relating to molds.
Have the ability to use all measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, indicators, travel dials, and their applications) to measure and determine proper mold and component fits and tolerances within .0002" to .0005".
Wire molds and read an OHM meter to understand basic electrical issues in diagnosing heater and thermal couple failures.
Construct or rebuild mold components per prints, using any or all machine tools available in Mold Repair area as well as the Tool Room.
Assemble mold and components maintaining proper dimensional tolerances.
Maintains an extremely clean and safe work area with an emphasis on 5"s.
Participate in continuous improvement activities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education and Experience:
High School Diploma
With 2-3 years in a mold repair or mold making environment.
Associate's Degree in Machining Technology or Mold Making
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities (KSA's):
Demonstrate mechanical aptitude necessary to troubleshoot and repair equipment
Machine modifications and process improvements on equipment in a manufacturing environment
Read mold drawings
Use of micrometers, indicators, height gauges, etc.
Ability to operate machine tools
Molding, mold design, material flow and mold steels and their applications
Troubleshooting skills to be used for continuous process improvement
Minimum Physical Requirements or Demands:
Use of forklift, gauge, hazardous chemicals, and microscope

The FRAM Group-Autolite facility in Spartanburg, SC, is looking for an experienced Tool & Die Maker for the various aspects of manufacturing. Work with tools, dies, prototypes and/or models to repair tooling. Operate CNCs, read gauges, and test completed projects for close tolerances.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications of tools, dies, prototypes or models
Provide close production support, such as troubleshooting and repair of production machines
Compute dimensions and tolerances and set up machine tools
Set up, operate and maintain a variety of conventional and (CNC) machine tools to cut, turn, mill, drill, bore, grind or otherwise shape work piece to prescribed dimensions and finish
Verify machined parts for conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), vernier calipers, micrometers, and electronic measuring devices
Fit and assemble or disassemble parts using hand tools
Test completed tools, dies, jigs or fixtures for proper operation
Able to work within close tolerances +/- .0005
Action oriented with proven track record for resolving tool/die issues in a demanding manufacturing environment
