About the Job
Position will provide engineering support toward meeting of client based delivery and development goals. CHP site engineering support, including the design, construction, and maintenance of equipment that replicates laboratory chemical process on pilot and commercial scales. Experimental skills related to chemical process development and kilo – scale synthesis of organic compounds of medicinal importance. Serve as an expert chemical engineering and pharmaceutical science resource to the chemical development group, the Cambrex High Point site, and to the larger Cambrex organization.
Knowledge and experience in technologies such as continuous processing, flow chemistry, microwave chemistry is preferred.
Knowledge of and experience with in-situ reaction monitoring technology is preferred.
Knowledge or expertise in principles of operational excellence, six-sigma, and process optimization preferred.
Application of key principles of chemical engineering to work within a matrix-based chemical development team to construct systems and design chemical processes that will efficiently support on-scale safe production of promising pharmaceutical candidates.
Collaboration with process development chemists and analytical chemists to develop safer and more robust processes for laboratory and plant production.
Development of key process improvements and strategies leading to improved yield, throughput, purity, increased efficiency, capacity enhancement, and reduced cost.
Maintain current knowledge of state-of-the-art techniques for improving engineering principles related to organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, process development techniques and cGMP regulations. Knowledge of root cause/batch failure analysis.
Knowledge of final form screening/polymorph screening/crystallization studies is preferred.
Expected to work closely with partner teams, including chemistry, analytical, and manufacturing operations to coordinate project related equipment and activities.
Actively promote the results of ongoing projects within the group and to external clients.

A B.S. degree in chemical engineering required. A minimum of 5 years' experience in the pharmaceutical or comparable chemical industry is required.
Strong skills and knowledge in organic chemistry, especially as applicable to process chemistry. Excellent verbal and written communication/interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, organizational skills, and the ability to work in a diverse team environment are essential. In this role, the Principal Chemical Engineer will be responsible for the development of online monitoring and automation technologies for optimizing downstream refinery, fuels, and petrochemical process additive programs. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Designing, developing and performing batch and continuous crystallization experiments and characterizing these processes through a variety of in-line and off-line analytical tools.
Establishing an appropriate control strategy and optimizing crystallizations to achieve product with desired form, habit, and particle size distribution. Techniques are expected to include evaluation of active control via feedback control and/or model-predictive control approaches.
Developing robust crystallization process models to understand and characterize the variables that impact crystal attributes.
Establishing an overarching strategy for design and scale up of robust continuous crystallization, with a focus toward start-up and shut-down procedures. Multiple potential designs will be interrogated, including novel approaches to integrate crystallization with wetmilling to maximize the opportunity for tuning of product attributes.
Education Minimum Requirement:
- PhD with less than 3 years of Postdoctoral Experience or achieved a Ph.d by Spring/Summer of 2018
Working knowledge of key crystallization concepts such as supersaturation, growth and nucleation kinetics, and kinetic and thermodynamic driving forces.
Demonstrated ability to develop well-controlled crystallization processes through antisolvent addition and/or temperature.
Laboratory hands-on experience.
Data interpretation, manuscript preparation, publication and presentation of results.
Proficient in process modeling software such as Matlab, gPROMs, or similar software.
Familiarity with a variety of process analytical tools, including focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM), infrared (IR), and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC).
