In this role, the Associate Principal Chemist designs and conducts high level analytical testing for product/packaging development and various problem-solving requests with a focus on our Tropicana and Quaker businesses. Primary job duties include performing GCMS volatile and flavor analytical testing. The position interfaces with product, process and packaging development, quality and food safety teams, delivering input for robust experimental design and ensuring timely results and insights. The individual helps maintain instrumentation and develop methodology to achieve business priorities and helps identify new volatile measurement capability. The mission of the Office of Indiana State Chemist Pesticide Section is to protect the public and the environment by ensuring that pesticide products distributed within the state are properly formulated and labeled and that individuals who apply pesticides have met minimum competency standards, when required, and apply those pesticides without causing harm to people or property. This Analytical Chemist position supports a team of investigators by providing scientific data on pesticide related investigations.
As Analytical Chemist, you will perform chemical analysis on environmental samples (vegetation, soil, water, etc.) to determine the presence of pesticides. You will process these samples using various extraction methodologies and measure the pesticide components with various analytical instrumentations, e.g. GC/FID/ECD, GC/MS, LC/PDA, LC/MS/MS, LC-HRMS. Additionally, you will collaborate with a team of scientists in the development of new methods.

The primary responsibility of the Food Safety Quality and Regulatory (FSQR) Chemist is to ensure products meet or exceed customer requirements for quality and food safety. Work closely with Flavorists to identify needs and opportunities for natural flavors and extracts
Pro-actively develop flavor solutions that are market preferred leveraging input from bench top product development, culinary testing, technical innovation, and consumer trend analysis
Anticipate, investigate and resolve problems related to raw materials, flavor systems, finished prototypes and initial scale-up procedures
Build successful and cooperative relationships with other technical counterparts and leverage company technical resources in support of global technology implementation
Collect and analyze data from experiments and concepts to prepare summary reports and recommendations for the leadership team
Provide input to advance strategic category initiatives
MS degree and/or PhD in Food Science, Chemistry, Food Engineering, or closely related discipline
Minimum 10 years (with MS degree) OR Minimum 6 years (with PhD) of R&D experience in food, food ingredient, and/or natural product industry
Significant experience in the natural products industry gaining a solid understanding of how and where natural flavor ingredients are sourced
Significant hands-on experience with laboratory and/or pilot plant equipment
Experience with process scale-up from pilot to commercial scale manufacturing
Strong Chemistry and Mathematics skills
Strong background in analytical methods and sensory science
Experience managing large, complex projects
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to collaborate effectively across functions and levels
Excellent presentation and communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to work safely and follow Good Manufacturing Practices
Ability to periodically lift up to 30 pounds
PhD in Food Science, Food Chemistry, or a Natural Products Chemistry field
Strong background working with flavor raw materials
Demonstrated product and process development experience
Experience realizing formulas, making dilutions, and modifying usage rates

Responsibilities of this position include:
Testing both finished products and raw materials
Execute chemistry analyses based on standard operating procedures
Sample preparation, data acquisition, data interpretation and reporting in support of production.
Execute analyses under strict deadlines
Daily calibrations of analytical equipment
Perform tests on finished and raw materials and report results
Enter in results in quality module
Assist with the investigation of internal and external non-conformances
