Responsible for applying general scientific understanding of quality assurance and food/feed safety technology and processes across a location in the following areas of focus: testing and auditing process documentation, data collection and analysis, and facilitating knowledge transfer. With direction from more senior team members this role ensures products meet or exceed customer requirements for food/feed safety and quality. Monitor plant operations for compliance to behavioral standards related to food/feed safety and quality. Escalate issues of non-compliance to more senior team members.
Reports any possible concerns of non-compliance or non-conformance to food safety/quality standards.
30% Develop, Implement and Assess Process and Systems
Assists more senior team members with assessment of quality assurance systems, equipment and parameters (e.g., calibration, oversight of testing performed, procedures, instrumentation, etc.).
Assists more senior team members with routine to complex maintenance and calibration on laboratory and testing equipment and independently performs general upkeep of laboratory and testing areas.
With some oversight, manages inventory control and purchasing of laboratory and testing supplies to assure all items required for testing and are available.
30% Collect and Analyze Data, Document Results
With frequent supervision documents testing results and conducts routine analysis. Identifies possible trends and provides input to more senior team members on next steps to address trends. Documents and shares best practices across team and occasionally, with a cross-functional audience.
Document audit and test data and results accurately and appropriately in the correct information management system(s).
Organizes and maintains accurate and pertinent data (e.g., spreadsheets, graphs, reports, etc.) to assure that processes and products, and any changes, are controlled. Maintains systems/techniques for reporting data across functional areas.
Assists more senior team members with internal presentations related to the locations quality and food/feed safety policies, practices, procedures and results/ measures.
10% Shape Food/Feed Safety, Quality and Regulatory Culture
Assists in the delivery of training materials for internal employees at various levels in the organization related to food/feed safety and quality issues, practices and risks. Promotes the development of food/feed safety and quality culture.
With guidance from more senior team members, improves professional competency related to food/feed safety and/or quality specialty area. Transfer knowledge to cross-functional teams (operations, FSQR, technology) across location.

The 450 acre Hopewell Plant is the world's largest caprolactam plant, producing millions of pounds of finished products per day. Products include the nylon feedstock caprolactam, ammonium sulfate fertilizers, ammonia, cyclohexanone, and specialty chemicals. The plant contains virtually every chemical engineering unit operation and every class and size of operating equipment in the various stages of manufacture. The site is located on the James River near the city of Richmond and is convenient to Virginia and North Carolina beaches, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley and the DC Metro area.
The Analytical Chemist job primarily consists of: (1) Supervising laboratory technicians performing analytical testing, ensuring their compliance with all safety procedures, and validating their results. As Analytical Chemist, you will perform chemical analysis on environmental samples (vegetation, soil, water, etc.) to determine the presence of pesticides. You will process these samples using various extraction methodologies and measure the pesticide components with various analytical instrumentations, e.g. GC/FID/ECD, GC/MS, LC/PDA, LC/MS/MS, LC-HRMS. Additionally, you will collaborate with a team of scientists in the development of new methods.

Responsible for performing chemical sample preparation, analytical method development, and sample analysis in support of advanced engineering activities, including operation of TD GC-MS, Portable GC-MS, Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy, ICP-MS and other analytical instruments, preparing reports, providing data and interacting/consulting with product development communities, performing analytical equipment maintenance.
Approximately 90% of role will be servicing workflow requests from product development engineers for sample preparation and analysis on instruments within your area. Maintain overall lab capabilities in a high state of readiness by performing regular instrument calibrations, preparing standards from reagents, adhering to and developing advanced test procedures. Contribute to analytical development projects.
5~7 years GC-MS experience with minimum of bachelor degree.
Hands on experience with operation of TD GC-MS, TDS, ICP-MS.
Good analytical equipment maintenance/troubleshooting skills.
