Main Activities/Duties/Responsibilities This position is primarily accountable for providing technical support in the development of new color development, support to field, manufacturing and applications, data analysis and problem solving, DOE design, customer service, and meeting specific customer requirements. The responsibilities for the Compounding Color Chemist are: COLOR MATCH EXPERTISE • Manage the color laboratory • Provide technical support for color matching • Strong connect to compounding operations to scale up color formulations to small order manufacturing • Communicate with extrusion operators to ensure reproducible and quality controlled formulations • Apply understanding of dyes, pigments, effect pigment, resins, and additives to Eastman color matching process and production • Connect with industry to understand color technology and industry trends • Increase knowledge of polyester chemistry, processing, and testing • Assist Color Matchers to ensure color formulations are expeditious and cost effective CUSTOMER SERVICE • Interact directly with sales and customers to achieve color goals and concepts • Independently manage customer needs including color matching, blending, and master batch production • Understand customer and end-use application requirements.
Work closely with Tech Service, Application Development and Sales to ensure product meets customer requirements • Understand business strategy and ensure alignment of color matching and master batch production to business needs • Communicate with customers to provide correct formulation and color match up front • Suggest actions to reduce risks and shorten timelines especially related to color match business • Interface with Innovation and Production to ensure any changes in pigment sources or suppliers do not affect the quality of their products PROCESS IMPROVEMENT • Evaluate new technology and its potential application at Eastman • Participates in Six Sigma or lean improvements • Continually improves color lab. Make recommendations for change and champion change initiatives HSE • Contribute to a tidy work environment in the lab • Comply with all safety related rules and policies EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS • 4-year technical degree; Chemistry preferred OR 2-year technical degree with 5+ years of applicable polymer color experience EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS • Five year’s related experience as a senior color match specialist (Single pigment concentrate experience desired). Polymer experience a plus • A strong knowledge and understanding of color science, formulating, color matching, pigments, effect pigment, resins, and additives. Must have good color vision per the Munsell color test system • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, quality documents, operating instructions, and procedures • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external groups • Lean manufacturing training desired • Microsoft office skills, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint • Ability to solve problems and troubleshoot with limited information • Good prioritization skills and ability to deal with multiple customers and requests at the same time maintaining excellent customer service.
