Associate Breeder - Corn Silage Research
Description: Land O’ Lakes is a dairy farmer cooperative that is focused on delivering value to its farmer owners by investing in supporting current and future improvements in dairy operations and management. Corn silage is an important part of animal nutrition and welfare that underpins dairy sustainability. Through breeding we are improving corn varieties for key corn silage performance traits. Qualifications: Position Summary
The associate breeder will support creation, testing, selection, and advancement of corn silage germplasm.
This role will also participate in corn line development, commercial hybrid development, trait introgression, and breeder seed increase and purification.
The role will help guide process improvement and establishment of standard operating procedures in terms of electronic record management, seed lab activities, field activities, and data usage.
The associate breeder will network across business units from manufacturing to sales and will be in a position to help set strategic direction for Land O’ Lakes corn silage research and development. Job responsibilities
Lead data and record management work for global nursery and yield trial work.
Support planning, execution, and analysis of yield trial experiments and nursery fields.
Organization of breeding program inventory and maintenance of track and trace integrity and seed source quality.
Coordinate breeding program connections and key hand-offs with other business functions (e.g. manufacturing, sales, trait development).
Support Davis Excellence Through Stewardship (ETS) lead for corn in implementing program activities for managing transgenic material. Identify and plan internship opportunities and recruit and supervise interns. Lead on-site training for field work such as pollination, note taking, harvest, etc.
Lead continuous process improvement initiatives for all aspects of the breeding program.
Other key responsibilities include helping to keep spending within budget, hiring and supervising seasonal staff, calendar based activity management, advancement and deployment of germplasm. Required qualifications
Masters / Bachelors of Science in Plant Breeding, Animal Breeding, Genetics, Agronomy, Horticulture or related field.
Minimum 5 years research experience Excellent problem solving skills.
Ability to support and train others in execution of technical activities.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary research team.
Ability to work independently and contribute to operational planning and business strategy.

Responsible for all facets and operations of the corn oil skid and DDG dryers to maximize corn oil/ DDG production. This position is part of the plant’s operations team. Reports directly to the Operations Manager and will receive guidance and instruction from the Operations Manager and Plant Manager.
Essential Functions include but are not limited to: * Maintains a clean working environment at the corn oil machines, dryers and the surrounding area.
Collects daily data for metrics and trending reporting.
Performs sampling of corn oil and DDG for quality.
Maintains input inventories.
Enters all mechanical needs into MAPCON to be scheduled.
Manages all aspects of corn oil load out and dryer systems.
Ensures flow meters and other gauges are performing properly.
Pulls samples of product, coordinate/conduct tests, then record, and analyze data.
Reports operation conditions of the corn oil and dryer systems to the Operations manager.
Ensures the oil product is always within approved specs.
Ensures DDG is always within approved specs.
Works with Lead operators when changing specific parameters.
Provides daily training to the operations staff for continued improvement.
Aides in other areas of the plant when available and needed.
Continually strives to improve upon the oil production process.
Qualifications: * Ability to apply the knowledge in the areas of Start-up, Shutdown, and Emergency Procedures.
Ability to perform troubleshooting and light maintenance of the corn oil and dryer systems.
