Postdoctoral Researcher – Wind Energy Computational Fluid Dynamics – Mesoscale-Microscale Coupling
Posting Title Postdoctoral Researcher – Wind Energy Computational Fluid Dynamics – Mesoscale-Microscale Coupling .
Location CO - Boulder .
Position Type Postdoc (Fixed Term) .
Hours Per Week 40 .
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. Within the National Wind Technology Center (NWTC), NREL actively studies wind-plant performance topics using high-fidelity methods including computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This research program has an opening for one postdoctoral researcher with an emphasis on developing CFD methods to model the influence of regional-scale (mesoscale) weather on the wind-plant-scale (microscale) flow.
In this application, the microscale flow field is simulated with large-eddy simulation (LES). The ultimate goal of this work is to be able to simulate wind-plant behavior using the most realistic inflow possible under the full range of atmospheric conditions. The applications of such simulations range from better understanding basic wind-plant physics to designing novel wind-plant control systems, all with the goal of reducing the cost of wind energy. The postdoctoral researcher will work within an inter-disciplinary, inter-laboratory team developing and applying state-of-the-art wind-plant simulation codes.
Job duties and responsibilities of the position: The postdoctoral researcher will work within a team to further develop existing methods and/or create new methods for coupling mesoscale weather forcing to microscale wind-plant LES for cases ranging from simple to complex terrain. Specific topics of interest include:
how to initiate turbulence in the LES domain from the RANS-like mesoscale weather model output;
definition of appropriate boundary conditions and internal forcings to incorporate mesoscale effects on the microscale wind-plant flow;
modeling of surface fluxes and stresses;
and, definition of benchmark cases, validation quantities of interest, and rigorous validation processes to test the performance of new meso-to-microscale coupling methods, using field data when available. The postdoctoral researcher may also collaborate with other teams applying high-fidelity wind-plant simulation tools to applications including wind-plant/wind-turbine control and optimization, reduced-order modeling, etc. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and present results at conferences.
Additional Basic Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The position requires experience in engineering or science with a strong background in computational fluid dynamics, specifically large-eddy simulation, and a strong grasp of turbulence and turbulence modeling. Knowledge of the object-oriented C++ programming language is required. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. . Required Education, Experience, and Skills Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years. .
Preferred Qualifications .
Submission Guidelines Please note that in order to be considered an applicant for any position at NREL you must submit an application form for each position for which you believe you are qualified. Applications are not kept on file for future positions. Please include a cover letter and resume with each position application. .
