This position will work in Crating. Crating is responsible for building the wooden or aluminum crates for displays to ship in.
- Learn Daktronics products systems and processes and assemble product in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
- Learn the modular and technical construction of displays and interpret technical drawings.
- Safely operate power tools such as nail guns, staple guns and saws. As well as material moving equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, power lifts, ladders and truck driving.
- Document weights, crated weights and dimensions of equipment. Label crates with proper required details. List component and unit serial numbers for all pertinent items and displays.
- Learn how to read and follow effective loading diagrams. Gather and file all pertinent documentation pertaining to each contract per Sarbanes-Oxley protocol.
- Become certified to operate cranes and other lifting equipment.
- Work safely and effectively. Must be able to follow instructions. Need to be able to work in a team atmosphere as well as individually.
- Must be flexible to help in other areas of the factory including Inventory as well as manufacturing if needed.
- Learn and follow company policies and procedures.
- Regularly and reliably work the scheduled hours. Ability to work overtime when workload requires.
- Wear all proper protective equipment as required in work area in accordance with Daktronics Safety Policy and OSHA standards. Measures and cuts wood to build crates for shipping non-standard materials such as vault doors, small generators, communications equipment, etc.
Determines the appropriate packing materials for crating.
Prepares appropriate shipping documentation and labeling as required for surface and/or air transportation as appropriate. Assists senior craters in the most complex crating activities that require non-standard/custom crates.
Assists with blocking, bracing, and cushioning for delicate/fragile materials.

Fabricates shipping containers and packaging to protect electronics and mechanical hardware from the environmental conditions encountered during transportation and long term storage. Such containers shall meet the packaging requirements noted in the applicable contract, or in the case of hazardous materials, the applicable federal or international regulation.
Interpret process plans and drawings provided by packaging engineering and coordinate fabrication and packing inspection points with Quality Assurance, to ensure contractual and regulatory compliance. May also be required to periodically fabricate tool storage containers, tool cabinets, and wood holding devices. Interprets blueprints, specifications, process plans and work orders.
Determines size and type of crate, dimensions, kinds and sizes of wood and other materials used in fabrication of non-standard and special shipping crates and boxes when such information is not specified. Lays out work and marks or scribes trim and cutting lines for cutting to length, ripping to width, cutting ends as angles and for making cut-outs by taking measurements directly from items to be shipped or by making reference to blueprints and sketches for exact dimension. Directs, performs and determine methods for the operation of blocking, padding securing, and bracing loads on trailers, flat cars and box cars.
Fabricates domestic and overseas shipping containers for large irregularly shaped items, which require deviation from standard practice. Applies protective preservation coating to items susceptible to corrosion. Implement special handling and packaging techniques necessary to assure the safety of personnel and hardware (i.e.
ESD, Clean Room, material Handling, Ordnance, and Hazardous Material and Waste practices). Perform marking, labeling and bar coding in accordance with MIL-STD-129 and applicable hazardous material regulations. Perform heat seal seam test (pull and bubble tests)on MIL Spec bagging material, when required by contract. Build prototype containers to support the Performance Oriented Package Testing Laboratory when requested.
Monitor the stock of packing materials, lumber, and fasteners in the Shipping area. Inform supervision of shortages. Upon receipt and inspection of procured material, stock in approved areas.
Basic Qualifications Ability to identify and fabricate the appropriate shipping containers and packaging to protect electronics and mechanical hardware. Ability to interpret packing instructions such as blueprints, sketches, specifications, process plans and work orders provided by Packaging Engineering or Program. Knowledgeable with the safe operations of various tools such as table saws, radial arm saws, band saws, nail and staple guns, hammers, drills and circular saws and other cutting tools.
Familiar with material handling equipment. Ability to work without supervision and possess general computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office suite applications and other web based applications. Must be able to obtain and maintain all certifications required.
Desired skills Knowledge of Mil STD 129 marking and Mil Spec container fabrication, SAP systems and Inventory management skills.
