The Technologist V Section Head Blood Bank under general supervision, Works closely with the Administrative Laboratory Director and Laboratory Education Manager toward the effective coordination of personnel and all other resources for the performance of workload. Supervises and assists Technicians/Technologist in the performance of section workload, quality control procedures, maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment, and investigation of abnormal results. Works closely with Laboratory Administration in preparation of staff schedules and employee evaluations. Makes recommendations for the purchase of new equipment and implementation of new test procedures. Ensures that section operates within established Hospital and Laboratory policies and procedures for specimens from patients of all age groups. Enforces standards of operation and safety. Promotes a positive working environment and maintains professional conduct in that section. Promotes a positive image for the Laboratory and the Hospital both internally and publicly with customers of all ages.
Supervises and assists technical personnel in the performance of quality control procedures. Ascertains that Q.C. records are maintained in accordance with established standards for all age groups of patients. Supervises and assists in the maintenance of equipment and supply inventory. Recommends, prepares and implements new test procedures. Maintains procedure manuals and makes changes as necessary. Makes knowledgeable recommendations for the purchase of new test procedures. Supervises general operation of the Section. Plans, organizes and delineates employee responsibilities and duties, coordinates all employee efforts toward accomplishment of section mission. Ensures that section personnel are technically competent and knowledgeable of, and adhere to, hospital and laboratory policies and procedures. Enforces hospital and accrediting agency safety and health rules and regulations. Observes established safety measures to minimize hazards to self and co-workers.
Coordinates resources, supervises and assists technicians, technologists in the timely, efficient, accurate and precise performance of procedures. Communicates with physicians regarding proper specimen collection. Ensures the accuracy of specimen identification from receipt to final disposition fulfilling all internal and external policies and regulations including medicolegal custodial responsibilities. Maintains confidentiality in the processing of all specimens and handling of all laboratory data.
Participates in preparation of section staffing schedule and makes recommendations for changes in staffing pattern and manpower acquisition.
Instructs new employees and other staff as requested. Supervises staff faculty participation in teaching and training. Coordinates and supervises section teaching program, recommends and implements changes as necessary; recommends modifications in overall teaching program of the lab. Keeps current in advances in education methods and acts as resource person to staff faculty. Keeps abreast of new theoretical knowledge and technological innovations and recommends modifications where necessary.
Disseminates pertinent departmental information. Participates in Section Head meetings and other committee meetings where necessary. Communicates with company representatives to learn of new and improved products in Histology and Cytology. Participates in nursing in-service as necessary.

Texas Ten Step Facility The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for competently performing moderate and high complexity testing in the areas of Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Immunohematology, Microbiology, Urinalysis and Serology. Analyzes, reviews, and reports test results and quality control results and takes remedial action when indicated. Ensures specimen integrity by adhering to the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing. Adheres to departmental policies and procedures including departmental programs, quality control, performance improvement, and safety. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Performs laboratory testing.
Competently performs moderate and high complexity testing in Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Microbiology and Serology.

Operates test systems proficiently.
Troubleshoots test systems and takes appropriate action according to predetermined protocols. Notifies appropriate Supervisory personnel. Ensures quality of laboratory services.

Identifies problems which may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and takes appropriate action including supervisor notification.

Operates general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computer keyboards and CRT, automated analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, manual and automated pipettes. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Required: Associate degree in a clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution, including a U.S. military program to be completed no later than 6 months from the date of hire. Blood Bank Supervisor
The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) is seeking an experienced and committed Blood Bank Supervisor/Bacteriologist III The Blood Bank Supervisor provides administrative leadership and technical support in the Blood Bank Department (Transfusion Medicine). Evaluates and recommends new instrumentation/methodologies to insure quality improvement in services. Assists in coordinating workload, staffing, reporting, technical oversight and client services within the clinical laboratory.
Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) policies and applicable Federal and State regulations. Hours to be worked: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Days Off: Saturday and Sunday Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
Performs patient testing and provides supervision primarily in Transfusion Medicine, but may also perform testing as needed in Chemistry, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and, Hematology/Coagulation using standard laboratory equipment, i.e. automated analyzers, microscopes, incubators, centrifuges, computers, cell washers, spectrophotometers. Determines proper procedure/methodology collecting and analyzing laboratory specimens and recommends modifications as needed to insure accuracy and quality of test results; provides in-service to appropriate laboratory, medical and nursing staff related to these modifications.
Contacts reference laboratories for such issues as special sample handling, test results and transportation of specimens. Confers with reference laboratory with issues such as test or methodology validation, new testing procedure requests from medical staff. Advises physicians and nurses regarding appropriate tests to enhance the quality of patient care, as well as informs the medical staff of the significance of test results.
Maintains required records for quality control, instrument maintenance, refrigerator temperatures, proficiency testing and any other required documentation for regulatory agencies. Provides feedback to Clinical Lab. Director and staff (thru in-service education) for PI outliers.
Complies data for CAP survey reports and insures that reports are filed timely. Complies statistical data for reference (send out) lab testing. Manages the operational and capital budget for the Blood Bank.
Compiles statistics for monthly test volumes, inventory, budget needs, quality control/linearity data and other information needed to ensure uninterrupted services to the hospital. Facilitates quarterly Blood Utilization Committee meetings, preparing statistical reports for review by the Clinical Lab. Hospital Mission:
