- Certification. Candidates must have either (1) or (2) below:
(1) Candidates must currently possess the appropriate certification as a MT, MLS, or CLS given by the ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT.
(2) For positions up to the full performance level, candidates must currently possess the categorical or specialist technologist level certification from the certification agencies listed above, such as, but not limited to, chemistry (C/SC), hematology (H/SH), microbiology (M/SM), molecular

Preferred Experience: A MT at this level carries out the day-to-day operations in the laboratory.
This would include routine testing, quality control, routine maintenance of instrumentation and troubleshooting. The MT develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates and validates
the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results ensuring all laboratory regulatory requirements are met. Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques, following practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace.
These require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, including organizing and setting priorities with minimal technical supervision. The work performed is in a variety of laboratory disciplines, such as chemistry, microbiology, immunology, hematology, and Immunochemistry. Such positions include requirements to monitor quality control systems and measures; collaborate in the diagnosis and treatment of patients; and provide education for laboratory healthcare professionals and the public in a professional, courteous and effective manner.

Blood Bank Supervisor/Bacteriologist III
The Blood Bank Supervisor provides administrative leadership and technical support in the Blood Bank Department (Transfusion Medicine). Evaluates and recommends new instrumentation/methodologies to insure quality improvement in services. Assists in coordinating workload, staffing, reporting, technical oversight and client services within the clinical laboratory. Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) policies and applicable Federal and State regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
Performs patient testing and provides supervision primarily in Transfusion Medicine, but may also perform testing as needed in Chemistry, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and, Hematology/Coagulation using standard laboratory equipment, i.e. automated analyzers, microscopes, incubators, centrifuges, computers, cell washers, spectrophotometers.
Determines proper procedure/methodology collecting and analyzing laboratory specimens and recommends modifications as needed to insure accuracy and quality of test results; provides in-service to appropriate laboratory, medical and nursing staff related to these modifications. Contacts reference laboratories for such issues as special sample handling, test results and transportation of specimens. Confers with reference laboratory with issues such as test or methodology validation, new testing procedure requests from medical staff.
Advises physicians and nurses regarding appropriate tests to enhance the quality of patient care, as well as informs the medical staff of the significance of test results. Maintains required records for quality control, instrument maintenance, refrigerator temperatures, proficiency testing and any other required documentation for regulatory agencies.
Provides feedback to Clinical Lab. Director and staff (thru in-service education) for PI outliers. Complies data for CAP survey reports and insures that reports are filed timely.
Complies statistical data for reference (send out) lab testing. Manages the operational and capital budget for the Blood Bank. Compiles statistics for monthly test volumes, inventory, budget needs, quality control/linearity data and other information needed to ensure uninterrupted services to the hospital. Facilitates quarterly Blood Utilization Committee meetings, preparing statistical reports for review by the Clinical Lab.
LSH takes pride in helping people recover from illnesses and conditions that are often underserved or difficult to manage in other health care settings. The Hospital serves populations that are mostly indigent, often in the care and custody of state agencies, and present with clinical issues that arise from mental illness, homelessness, and substance abuse.

Performs Laboratory testing on patient and control samples, and/or prepares blood components for transfusion. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge includes clinical correlation of test results, quality control requirements, and preventative maintenance.
Maintains department readiness for regulatory inspections and compliance requirements. Maintains department policy and procedure manuals in accordance with hospital policy. Is responsible for department quality control records, instrument maintenance, regulatory agency compliance, and supply process.
Participates in the continuous quality improvement process through professional development, continuing education, data collection and evaluation, and quality assurance. Develops and maintains orientation, training and competency tools and ensures compliance. Assists the Manager in evaluating and documenting employee performance.
Assists Manager in the recruitment, hiring, termination and retention of employees. Coordinates staff development activities of section including education, competency completion, validation, and orientation. Participates in data collection and analysis as requested by management.
Maximizes efficiency in section operations. Exhibits willingness to resolve problems as they arise. Knows FDA, CLIA, CAP, AABB requirements.
Earned a doctoral or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
Six years experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in an acute care laboratory with minimum 6 months blood bank experience. Four years supervisory experience preferred.
Current State of California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License
American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) registration preferred

Position Responsibilities Include:
Perform laboratory testing while ensuring quality patient care.
Creates constructive relationships to achieve mutually positive clinical or service outcomes with peers, management, customers, and other RUMC departments.
Reports accurate results. Correlates intra-laboratory results with each other and other clinical information. Suggests and performs follow-up where appropriate.
Has a positive effect on others including the ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships.
Acts as a resource person to coworkers and customers for technical questions. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the technical tasks associated with the assigned area of responsibility.
Performs basic troubleshooting of equipment and processes with minimal assistance, documents action and notifies appropriate personnel, for example, supervisors, of problems all of the time.
Performs required QC procedures and preventive maintenance, including corrective action and documentation, for all procedures and instrumentation. Recognizes QC problems or discrepancies and attempts to determine the cause of problem. Notifies appropriate supervisor regarding QC problems or discrepancies according to the established procedure.
Acts as "tech-in-charge" for specified periods of time.
Position Qualifications Include:
Bachelor of Science degree in relevant science required.
Current professional laboratory certification OR certification eligible from nationally recognized certifying agency preferred.
Previous laboratory experience preferred.
Able to work in fast pace, often stressful, computerized environment required.
Able to lift 10 lbs. and perform repetitive motions.
Works in laboratory with exposure to potentially infectious materials.
Must be able to effectively interact with peers, internal and external customers.
