Includes the following, other duties may be assigned.
Plan sequence of steps to achieve final outcome and desired product dimensions.
Position, align and secure machine parts in machine; set up c fixtures. Work with pieces having some shoulders, steps, and/or tapers.
Select grade of abrasive wheel according to specifications, knowledge of abrasives, and condition of metal, and attach to grinder. Determine machine speeds, feeds and stops for standard operations.
Program and set up CNC OD/ID grinders according to blueprint specifications and knowledge of the grinding process.
Operate grinder; make adjustments as needed. Add a flow of coolant to process to maintain the proper temperature of the work piece.
Use indicator, micrometer, vernier calipers, and various precision measuring equipment to set up and check dimensions and contours. Examine and feel surface of work piece for defects.
Maintain equipment and machines; perform preventive maintenance as needed.
Process all necessary documentation and paperwork for parts completed.
Train and guide assisting personnel on the grinding process.
Follow all clean up and housekeeping procedures. Comply with all quality and safety regulations.
Requires one to three years of trades training or equivalent experience and two to four years of related machining experience. Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, and percent. Requires the ability to operate various equipment to include form grinders, micrometers, indicators, dressing units, diamond discs, and various other precision measuring equipment. Requires a knowledge of gear principles, tooling, material characteristics, machine shop procedures, abrasives and general machining practices. Requires ability to operator a forklift truck and the ability to lift up to 40 lbs.

Essential Job Responsibilities for Machinist/Grinder:
Set up and operate conventional grinder, including internal and outside diameter (I.D & O.D.) cylindrical, centerless, and surface grinders (i.e. Crystal Lake, Okamoto, Nippei, Harig, etc.)
Use precision measuring equipment such as internal and external micrometers, gage blocks, dial indicators, air gages and optical comparators.
Mount dress and true a suitable type, size, and grade of grinding wheel to achieve blueprint requirements.
Grind to a tolerance of ± .0001
Set-up, use tooling fixtures and arbors to run parts with minimum supervision and yield on 1st piece.
Complete all required documentation such as time cards, work orders, preventive maintenance logs, etc.
Perform other related duties as assigned or tasks for other work centers as requested in order to accommodate customer requirements and workflow within the plant.
Actively participate in work center and cross-functional process improvement teams.
Follow all work center and LMI production, administration, and safety policy procedures, including work schedule and overtime requirements.

Read and interpret information from planning documents, drawings, blueprints, sketches, specifications, charts, graphs and engineering orders to develop machining/grinding operations and tooling.
