Slowly, but surely, he began to learn how to make patterns, cut fabrics and sew pockets. Eventually, through observation and diligent study of fashion books, he learned how to make full custom suits.
By the age of 23, he became a custom designer and tailor, designing, fitting, making patterns and crafting masterpieces.
At the age of 29, Jay moved to New York with only $100 in his pocket. Jay found employment in New York at a dry cleaners as well as a sewing and manufacturing company, where he met Jackie, his current wife and mother of their three children.
One year later, Jay moved to Dallas, Texas. After another six years working in another tailor shop, Jay had saved enough to open his own business. In 1991, Jay and Jackie founded J's Tailor & Cleaners. Jackie and Jay have been together for over 30 years, and co-own J's Tailor & Cleaners.
Since the opening of J's Tailor & Cleaners, Jay has gained the loyal business of numerous individuals within the Dallas area, even including a handful of celebrities. Jay has over 40 years of experience as a tailor and cleaner, and provides his customers with unmatched expertise through each of his family-owned business's services.

Job Summary Pioneer Theatre Company in Salt Lake City seeks a Lead Tailor/Theatrical Stitcher, position available beginning August 2017.PTCis a professional theatre company working underLORTagreements withAEA,SDC, andUSAproducing a seven show mainstage season that runs from August through May. This is a full time benefited position, salary is commensurate with experience. Under the direction of the Costume Shop Manager, the Lead Tailor/Theatrical Stitcher is responsible for the manufacturing and alterations of period and contemporary menswear as well as other tailored garments and general costume construction for the Pioneer Theatre Company main stage and U of Utah Theatre Department shows.
Responsibilities Essential Functions 1.Creates individual patterns for each costume or alters existing costume patterns to fit the performer’s measurements. 2.Construction and alterations of tailored clothing. 3.Fits basted costume to the actor or actress and marks areas requiring alterations. 4.Performs hand stitching finish work on costumes. Pressing and spot-cleaning costumes as needed. 5.Performs emergency repair work needed on a costume to keep the performance running. 6.Fine hand sewing to repair antique costumes, change details such as adding trims, buttons, appliques, etc. 7.May assist in the shopping for supplies and inventory needed for a particular production. 8. Explains costume construction techniques to student workers as needed 9.Assists in cleaning of work space and restocking of supplies in order to keep work area orderly.
Minimum Qualifications Successful completion of an apprenticeship in tailoring, or the equivalency; three years of previous tailoring experience in a tailoring shop; the ability to take a rendering and produce a pattern from it; and oral and written communications skills required. The journeyman status is obtained by successful completion of a four year apprenticeship training program incorporating all aspects of garmet design, layout, cutting, sewing, and tailoring.

At Halls Kansas City, the Alterations department is known for its expert tailoring of men’s and women’s clothing. In addition, the department is responsible for working on items for the Visual Merchandising Department, Store Operations and other areas as needed. Principle accountabilities include, but are not limited to:
Performs wide variety of alterations required to fit customer requests: hand and machine work, shoulder, hem, collar, and sleeve work, sizing garments, repairs defective merchandise.
Analyzes garments to see what alterations are required, reconstructs garments as needed, has knowledge of and works with special care fabrics, prices alterations according to work performed.
Checks appointments daily and makes sure the garments are ready for the customer at the appointed time.
Works closely with others in the department to answer questions about fitting, construction, and fabric on the garments.
Remains available as needed for unscheduled fittings during the day.
- Performs other duties as assigned. Store basic hours are Mon-Sat, 10-7, Sun 12-6 with extended hours during the Holiday season. Work hours will vary within and outside of store hours and include holidays, weekends and evenings.
