SUMMARY: The Cytogenetics Technologist performs medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analysis of patient biological specimens of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease in the Cytogenetics Laboratory.
RESPONSIBILITIES: * Perform routine procedures including recording sample and patient information.
Performs proper specimen labeling, handling, processing, and storage of specimens.
Sets up cultures and harvests biological specimens including but not limited to leukemic blood and bone marrow.
Prepares fixative for harvesting, prepares slides for analysis, cover slip and stains.
Prepares solutions and media necessary to perform analysis.
Scans slides and counts chromosome and karyotypes cells at the microscopic level.
Captures images on a computerized system and prepares karyotypes for final report.
Prepares final chromosome analysis from culture initiation to final analysis of karyotypes.
Conduct analysis of specimens to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components in accordance with licensure and within state and federal guidelines.
Calibrates, operates and maintains all instrumentation and equipment with departmental policy.
Evaluates the validity of laboratory patient data according to the principles of accuracy, precision, methodology and Quality Control comparison.
Records results accurately and timely.
Maintains laboratory equipment and documents routine maintenance performed.
Communicates results to the other technicians, laboratory supervisor and director as directed.
Required: * Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or Natural Sciences including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.
Considerable knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation and terminology used in the clinical laboratory.
Certification as a Medical Technologist by a nationally recognized board/agency. (Technologist) * Thorough knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices including standard precautions and hazardous chemical handing.
Preferred: * NCA or American Society for Clinical Pathology certification or BOC technologist certification in cytogenetics.

Sr Cytogenetic Technologist
Assist manager/supervisor in training new technologists.
Assist manager/supervisor with the teaching and training of students (both undergraduate and graduate) and various hospital professionals.
Closely monitor specimen turnaround time and coordinates daily workload and staffing requirements.
Create patient reports including interpretation.
Ensure and maintain quality control and quality assurance measures in the laboratory.
Follow mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
Participate in the organization and direction of ancillary work performed by support and service personnel and volunteers.
Perform all duties of a cytogenetic technologist when needed.
Perform various additional testing such as specialized banding techniques and determine when specialized techniques are necessary based on analysis.
Review cases and discuss abnormal findings with laboratory manager/supervisor. Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Medical Technology, Biology or Chemistry required + 5 years experience in a cytogenetic laboratory required
Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Cytogenetics [CLSp(CG)] by the National Association for Medical Laboratory Personnel Technologist in Cytogenetics through examination by the American Society for Clinical Pathology [CG(ASCP)]
Maintenance of Certification
Analytical skills necessary to interpret test results and make appropriate recommendations for further testing
Analytical ability to perform advanced genetic tests, interpret and analyze test results noting abnormalities and discrepancies including determination of causality and troubleshoot and maintain instruments

The Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory offers metaphase and interphase chromosome analysis. The laboratory aids in the diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of hematologic disorders and solid tumors. Services available are tissue culture, metaphase analysis, special stains (GTG, C, Q, NOR) and FISH (fluorescence
hybridization). Our staff includes a assistant professor faculty member, laboratory manager, six laboratory supervisors, 11 senior technologists, 24 experienced certified cytogenetic technologists and five technicians.
Technical Skills •Performs accurate cytogenetic analysis of metaphase or interphase cells, with accurate karyograms and ISCN nomenclature and utilizes knowledge of patient diagnosis relating to cytogenetics. •Able to review previous cytogenetic results and correlate them with current findings, demonstrates knowledge of normal differential values for bone marrow and peripheral blood. •Evaluates specimen integrity and independently performs tissue culture, harvesting, banding, routine analysis, FISH procedures and solid tumor processes as applicable. •Maintains proficiency in all computer functions. •Attends/participates in sectional and team in-services and meetings.

The Cytogenetics Lab located at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is seeking a
Cytogenetic Technologist , performing state of the art molecular technologies to discover novel genetic and clinically useful molecular biomarkers. The
Cytogenetic Technologist will be part of the Microarray Team, responsible for performing several microarray testing protocols on various tumor sample types. The position requires wet-bench lab experience and understanding of molecular cytogenetics, as well as microarray data analysis and subsequent interpretation of copy number and allelic imbalances.
Perform SNP-array testing and analysis using Cytoscan and Oncoscan platforms (Affymetrix) as well as aCGH (Agilent).
Analyze microarray data using CHAS and Nexus software and report clinically significant findings.
Triage cases for which array testing had been requested and communicate with Laboratory Directors and clinicians when necessary.
Be proficient in operating and maintaining microarray hardware and analysis software.
Work with a team of microarray technologists as well as collaborate with the main Cytogenetics laboratory to ensure accurate and timely reporting of array results.
Review all test requests thoroughly for errors, omissions, clarity, and potential problems.
Must follow unidirectional flow of specimen handling to avoid contamination.
Help maintain commonly used equipment. Resolve minor equipment problems and operate equipment carefully and according to procedures.
Perform necessary equipment checks, performance testing, preventive maintenance, and quality control on equipment per laboratory guidelines, as assigned. Assure equipment and instruments meet performance standards and record results.
Comply with clinical genetic testing regulatory agencies and proficiency programs (CAP, CLIA, NYS Department of Health).
Education and Experience
