Job Summary Oversees the Cytology Department from the collection and preparation of cytological materials to the distribution of the final report. Maintains a cooperative working relationship with intradepartmental and interdepartmental personnel and medical staff. Qualifications - Minimum Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of cytotechnology or bachelors degree with certificate from accredited school of cytotechnology. Qualifications - Preferred ASCP certification or elgible.
Physical Demands Must be able to tolerate sitting long periods of time behind a microscope.Requires occasional prolonged standing/walking, will involve some stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Hours 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Bachelor’s degree in health science (Biology, Zoology, Medical Technology)
One year of cytology program from approved school
Valid California Cytotechnologist License
Certified Cytotechnologist (CT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
Current Gynecological Cytology Profiency Testing Certification * 5 years of cytology experience preferred
Working knowledge of laboratory information systems
Working knowledge of quality assurance/performance improvement programs
Ability to work independently

Receives, identifies, and accesses all gynecological smears and non-gynecological specimens submitted for cytological evaluation.
Prepares smears from all non-gynecological specimens, such as urine, sputum, and fluids by any or all of the following procedures: centrifugation, filtration, placing desired specimen on glass slides using pipette or applicator stick and immersing slide into fixative or spraying slide with aerosol fixative.
Prepares slides for microscopic evaluation by immersing slides into appropriate stains, rinsing, dehydrating, and clearing agents, mounting slides with specific mounting agent and placing blank coverslip over specimen slides.
Examines all smears for evidence of cancer or other diseased conditions; classifies slides according to established classifications ranging from negative to positive for malignant cells; signs-out all normal slides; refers all abnormal cases to pathologist for further evaluation or decision as to whether biopsy or further cytological study is necessary.
Compiles listings of patients from whom a pathologist has requested follow-up specimens; maintains follow-up file on all atypical cases to determine if cell abnormalities have remained same, been eliminated or intensified; records and compares any surgical findings with cytological findings; reports findings to pathologist.
Maintains records of all work performed in cytology section; orders and maintains adequate supplies; prepares reagents and stains, as needed.
Assists with invasive procedures performed in Radiology and other locations within the hospital (e.g. FNA, FNAB).
Keeps abreast of new cytological methods, advances, and trends through periodicals, internet searches, meetings, and seminars.
Demonstrates sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of specialization.
Performs other duties and accepts responsibility as assigned.
Maintains established departmental and hospital policies, procedures, and objectives, as needed.
Maintains compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation agencies (e.g. CAP, DHS, TJC, FDA, CLIA, HCFA and OIG Laboratory Compliance), as needed.
Models adherence to applicable policies, protocols, practices including the Standards of Conduct, and excellent customer service with patients, medical staff, patient care providers, management and other departments that use our services.
Maintains compliance with performance improvement, safety, environmental and infection control programs, as needed.
Participates in appropriate educational programs and in-service meetings.

Must be Thin Prep and SurePath certified or elgible. Assist with deparmental QA monitors and other quality improvement initiatives. Assist with provision of cytological services on EUS, EBUS, and Super Dimension Procedures. • Initial evaluation of all non-gyn specimens and abnormal gyn cases
• Renders interpretation on all negative gyn specimens
• Refers abnormal and non-gyn specimens to technical specialist (after initial screen)
• Prepares appropriate reports and records on cytology specimens reviewed
• Correlates present and previous clinical and pathological history for each case as required for quality assurance monitors/logs
• Performs all functions of specimen preparation, screening and collection, when necessary

• Assure that all remedial action is taken whenever test systems deviate from laboratory-established performance specifications
• Ensure that patient Cytology test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning
• Research and development of new procedures
• Accept and complete job related projects
• Comply with all Covenant and Laboratory policies, procedures and safety practices
• Demonstrate working knowledge of appropriate safety protocol to include universal precautions, MSDS safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and proper hand washing techniques
• Assist in the training of new employees under direct control of the General Supervisor

Baccalaureate degree in laboratory science from an accredited college/university with documentation of one year of training under a CAHEA accredited school of technology OR prior to September 1, 1992, an Associate Degree in laboratory science from an accredited college/university with documentation of one year of training under a CAHEA accredited school of technology
Demonstrates excellent customer service skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to utilize independent judgment and work autonomously
At least two years of full-time experience in high-complexity Cytology testing examining cytology slide preparations
Technical knowledge, skills and abilities as they relate to the various areas of the clinical lab

Under the direction of the Pathology Department Manager, performs technological functions to ensure optimal diagnostic quality, utilizing efficient and safe processes. Stains, mounts, and studies cells of human body to detect evidence of cancer and pre-cancerous lesions, hormonal abnormalities, organisms, and other pathological conditions. Essential Functions:
Prepares microscopic slides from specimens of blood, scrapings, or other body fluids, including Fine Needle Aspirations.
Prepares and stains slide to preserve specimen and enhance visibility of cells under microscope.
Examines slide under microscope to identify abnormalities in cell structure.
Reports negative pap smears evaluations as final diagnosis.
Reports abnormal pap smear results to Pathologist as preliminary finding.
Reports preliminary findings for all Non-GYN cytology results to Pathologist.
Coordinates activities in cytology laboratory.
Performs other related duties as necessary.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Thirty six (36) months related experience as a Cytotechnologist plus the demonstrated ability to perform all cytology procedures in accordance with specifications set by the department head.
Bachelor's degree in science or related fields or graduated from a committee on allied health education and accreditation (CAHEA) accredited school of cytotechnology or other organization approved by health and human services (HHS);
Or certified in cytotechnology by a certification agency approved by HHS; (e.g., American Society of Clinical Pathologists);
Before September 1, 1992, have successfully completed two (2) years in an accredited institution (twelve (12) hours in science, eight (8) of which are in biology) and have twelve (12) months training in an approved school of cytotechnology; or have received six (6) months formal training in an approved school and six (6) months full-time experience,
Or before September 1, 1992, have achieved a satisfactory grade in an HHS proficiency test for cytotechnologists;
Before September 1, 1994, have two (2) years full-time experience or equivalent within the preceding five (5) years examining slides under the supervision of a physician certified in pathology and before January 1, 1969, be a high school graduate with six (6) months cytotechnology training in a laboratory directed by a physician and completed two (2) years full-time supervised experience in cytotechnology before 1/1/69;
Or on or before September 1, 1994, have two (2) years full-time experience or equivalent within preceding five (5) years in the U.S. and on or before September 1, 1995, have either graduated from a CAHEA-approved school or be certified as a cytotechnologist.
Valid/Current California Cytologist license required.
Ability to accurately describe cytologic conditions and provide appropriate differential diagnoses in writing.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
