Supervises, evaluates, prioritizes, organizes, and completes technical and operational functions of the Cytology section including accurate and efficient readings, reporting, and referrals of cytology test results. Performs GYN and non-GYN cytology screenings accurately and efficiently, evaluates, assists, and performs preanalytic sample preparation, as needed. Acts as a resource to other cytologists and technicians to evaluate and resolve problems. Supports the improvement of the department performance, demonstrates involvement in activities that impact facility-wide success. Provides input for evaluation of staff performance, support for regulatory compliance, staff scheduling, and other assigned tasks, as needed.
3 years of hospital cytotechnologist experience required
Knowledge of CoPath, EPIC, Cerner Millennium computer software.
California State Cytotechnologist license
ASCP Cytotechnologist certification recommended

What You Will Need
- Licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist specializing in Cytologist credentialed from the New York State Education Department Office of Professions obtained prior to hire date.
- Bachelor's Degree in Cytology Required.
- Up to three (3) months experience on the job preferred.

Cytotechnologist III On-Call
Under the direction of the Pathology Department Manager, performs technological functions to ensure optimal diagnostic quality, utilizing efficient and safe processes. Stains, mounts, and studies cells of human body to detect evidence of cancer and pre-cancerous lesions, hormonal abnormalities, organisms, and other pathological conditions.
Prepares microscopic slides from specimens of blood, scrapings, or other body fluids, including Fine Needle Aspirations.
Prepares and stains slide to preserve specimen and enhance visibility of cells under microscope.
Examines slide under microscope to identify abnormalities in cell structure.
Reports negative pap smears evaluations as final diagnosis.
Reports abnormal pap smear results to Pathologist as preliminary finding.
Reports preliminary findings for all Non-GYN cytology results to Pathologist.
Coordinates activities in cytology laboratory.
Performs other related duties as necessary.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Thirty six (36) months related experience as a Cytotechnologist plus the demonstrated ability to perform all cytology procedures in accordance with specifications set by the department head.
Bachelor's degree in science or related fields or graduated from a committee on allied health education and accreditation (CAHEA) accredited school of cytotechnology or other organization approved by health and human services (HHS);
Or certified in cytotechnology by a certification agency approved by HHS; (e.g., American Society of Clinical Pathologists);
Before September 1, 1992, have successfully completed two (2) years in an accredited institution (twelve (12) hours in science, eight (8) of which are in biology) and have twelve (12) months training in an approved school of cytotechnology; or have received six (6) months formal training in an approved school and six (6) months full-time experience,
Or before September 1, 1992, have achieved a satisfactory grade in an HHS proficiency test for cytotechnologists;
Before September 1, 1994, have two (2) years full-time experience or equivalent within the preceding five (5) years examining slides under the supervision of a physician certified in pathology and before January 1, 1969, be a high school graduate with six (6) months cytotechnology training in a laboratory directed by a physician and completed two (2) years full-time supervised experience in cytotechnology before 1/1/69;
Or on or before September 1, 1994, have two (2) years full-time experience or equivalent within preceding five (5) years in the U.S. and on or before September 1, 1995, have either graduated from a CAHEA-approved school or be certified as a cytotechnologist.
Valid/Current California Cytologist license required.
Ability to accurately describe cytologic conditions and provide appropriate differential diagnoses in writing.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Prepares and stains cytologic material for routine procedures; evaluates examination results as prescribed by standard procedures.
Routes findings to Pathologist for diagnosis. Performs other related duties as required. Properly uses laboratory equipment.
Calibrates, performs preventive maintenance, and troubleshoots equipment and instrument malfunctions. Prepares reagents, stains, and solutions as needed. Assists in inventorying and ordering lab supplies.
Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services as appropriate. Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.
Maintains accurate and complete documentation of patient information, equipment, results of specimen analysis, and slide screening totals to comply with regulations. Maintains clean, orderly and safe work area. Complies with hospital and laboratory safety and infection control policies and procedures to prevent exposure to infectious materials.
May educate staff, residents, fellows, or students by demonstrating procedures and assisting in continuing education activities May prepare specimens for cytopathologic examination. Evaluates cytologic material for carcinoma or other diagnoses and completes all daily assigned screening. Reviews quality of staining and the adequacy of the specimen to support an adequate diagnosis.
Accurately reports results to appropriate individuals and notes any abnormal or unexpected examination results. Audits computer reports to ensure that requests tests have been completed. Evaluates validity of examination results.
Gathers data to monitor quality improvement standards. Performs established procedures and equipment tests to support an accurate diagnosis.
Assists the Pathologist and Radiologist on fine needle aspiration biopsy procedures and is competent in giving an adequacy assessment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor¿s degree in medical technology, clinical lab science or a chemical, physical or biological science. Other bachelor¿s degree will be accepted if graduated from an accredited school of cytology or if science and math coursework meet requirement of certifying agency.
Education Exception: Bachelor¿s degree may be waived for a cytologist who was ASCP certified in the years prior to the bachelor¿s degree requirement by ASCP and a HEW/HHS technologist certified by Health and Human Services. Experience in Gynecological, Non-gynecological and FNA cytology preferred.
Certification as CT (ASCP) or CT- eligible by the American Society for Clinical Pathology which meets Georgia's Department of Human Resources requirements. Certification must be obtained within eighteen months of employment. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
