POSITION SUMMARY: The skilled Cytologist examines human cell samples under the microscope looking for early signs of cancer and other diseases.# The Cytologist processes and examines Cytologic smears for malignant cells, normal cells and micro organisms, and issues the final report on specimens that contain normal cells.# When abnormal cells are present, the Cytologist works with a Pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis.# The Cytologist works with little supervision.# # EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION Must have a Bachelors degree with a strong science/math/computer science background; as well as successful completion of 12 month CAHEA accredited Cytotechnolgy program.# Must be American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASC) registered.# # COMPETENCIES This work requires the incumbent have relatively good eyesight for looking through the microscope to determine results.# Must be able to work independently while still maintaining a high level of accuracy of findings. - Screens and diagnoses gynecologic cytology smears (Pap smears) according to established criteria. Is responsible for final diagnosis of negative cases. 2.
Screens and diagnoses, and refers to the supervisor and the pathologist, nongynecologic and atypical gynecologic cytology smears according to established criteria. 3. Assists the pathologist at fine needle aspirations in the Radiology Suite by preparing and staining slides for rapid interpretation. 4. Is familiar with pathology and hospital computer systems, and all record keeping, accessioning, and reporting tasks as defined in the procedure manual. 5.
Analyzes sperm morphology in semen samples and enters and verifies results in patient computer records. 6. Is familiar with various methods of cytopreparation, staining, and coverslipping for all cytologic specimens and troubleshoots same. 7. Is familiar with specimen rejection policies as well as collection and transportation policies. 8.
Cares for and maintains equipment, particularly microscopes and work area, and reports problems with equipment to the supervisor. 9. Plans own daily work in accordance with posted job rotation and daily staffing, and prioritizes duties to accomplish daily objectives of the Laboratory. 10. Keeps the supervisor informed of activities, and refers needs, problems, and unusual cases to the supervisor. 11.
Maintains professional growth and development through attendance at continuing education sessions within the Laboratory, and at seminars, workshops, conferences, or professional meetings outside the hospital. 12. Understands the overall system and work flow of the Cytology Laboratory and can assist with problem solving when necessary. 13. Complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies, established hospital and department policies and objectives. 14. Performs other similar or related duties as required or as directed.
1.Must be qualified according to CLIA '88 FINAL RULES. CT-ASCP certified or eligible. 2. Up-to-date knowledge of the field of cytotechnology. This can be acquired through recent completion of an ASCP-approved training program or through recent cytology work experience and attendance at continuing education seminars and workshops. 3. Extended periods of visual acuity and mental concentration in a small room in order to interpret cellular changes and render accurate diagnoses of patient samples.

Under indirect supervision, performs variety of duties pertaining to detection of evidence of cancer or other pathological conditions by studying cells.
Required Knowledge, Abilities, Licensing:
Bachelor's degree in health science (Biology, Zoology, Medical Technology)
One year of cytology program from approved school
Valid California Cytotechnologist License
Certified Cytotechnologist (CT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
Current Gynecological Cytology Profiency Testing Certification
5 years of cytology experience preferred
Working knowledge of laboratory information systems
Working knowledge of quality assurance/performance improvement programs

Position Duties and Responsibilities:
Receives, identifies, and accesses all gynecological smears and non-gynecological specimens submitted for cytological evaluation.
Prepares smears from all non-gynecological specimens, such as urine, sputum, and fluids by any or all of the following procedures: centrifugation, filtration, placing desired specimen on glass slides using pipette or applicator stick and immersing slide into fixative or spraying slide with aerosol fixative.
Prepares slides for microscopic evaluation by immersing slides into appropriate stains, rinsing, dehydrating, and clearing agents, mounting slides with specific mounting agent and placing blank coverslip over specimen slides.
Examines all smears for evidence of cancer or other diseased conditions; classifies slides according to established classifications ranging from negative to positive for malignant cells; signs-out all normal slides; refers all abnormal cases to pathologist for further evaluation or decision as to whether biopsy or further cytological study is necessary.
Compiles listings of patients from whom a pathologist has requested follow-up specimens; maintains follow-up file on all atypical cases to determine if cell abnormalities have remained same, been eliminated or intensified; records and compares any surgical findings with cytological findings; reports findings to pathologist.
Maintains records of all work performed in cytology section; orders and maintains adequate supplies; prepares reagents and stains, as needed.
Assists with invasive procedures performed in Radiology and other locations within the hospital (e.g. FNA, FNAB).
Keeps abreast of new cytological methods, advances, and trends through periodicals, internet searches, meetings, and seminars.
Demonstrates sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of specialization.
Performs other duties and accepts responsibility as assigned.
Maintains established departmental and hospital policies, procedures, and objectives, as needed.
Maintains compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation agencies (e.g. CAP, DHS, TJC, FDA, CLIA, HCFA and OIG Laboratory Compliance), as needed.
Models adherence to applicable policies, protocols, practices including the Standards of Conduct, and excellent customer service with patients, medical staff, patient care providers, management and other departments that use our services.
Maintains compliance with performance improvement, safety, environmental and infection control programs, as needed.
Participates in appropriate educational programs and in-service meetings.
Director Lab Services
The Director Lab Services is responsible for directing the administrative and management activities and technical activities of all laboratories in the Cleveland Clinic Akron General health system to ensure the accurate and timely completion of tests and reporting of test results to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment patients.
Directs the activities of the various laboratory departments to include the managers, supervisors, coordinators, clerks, secretaries, technologists, technicians, assistant pathology, histologists, cytologists and clerks. The director oversees the interviewing, hiring, training and disciplinary action, when needed, of all laboratory employees.
Plans and directs daily operations of the various departments within the Lab to ensure a safe environment for all medical staff, employees and visitors.
Ensures all department personnel maintain a customer-centric professional focus. Analyzes workload and productivity indices to ensure appropriate availability of services and test turnaround time.
Assumes financial responsibility for the various laboratory departments. Prepares the operating and capital budgets. Manages the supply and labor costs within established guidelines.
Ensures maximum reimbursement for services rendered. Keeps current with changes in Medicare/Medicaid and various third party payor guidelines and requirements. Responds to complaints and reports potential compliance problems related to Medicare, Medicaid
Oversees the coordination of medical center blood drives to ensure collection of sufficient units to achieve best pricing.

Cytotechnologist III - On Call
Description: Under the direction of the Pathology Department Manager, performs technological functions to ensure optimal diagnostic quality, utilizing efficient and safe processes. Stains, mounts, and studies cells of human body to detect evidence of cancer and pre-cancerous lesions, hormonal abnormalities, organisms, and other pathological conditions.
Prepares microscopic slides from specimens of blood, scrapings, or other body fluids, including Fine Needle Aspirations.
Prepares and stains slide to preserve specimen and enhance visibility of cells under microscope.
Examines slide under microscope to identify abnormalities in cell structure.
Reports negative pap smears evaluations as final diagnosis.
Reports abnormal pap smear results to Pathologist as preliminary finding.
Reports preliminary findings for all Non-GYN cytology results to Pathologist.
Coordinates activities in cytology laboratory.
Performs other related duties as necessary.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Thirty six (36) months related experience as a Cytotechnologist plus the demonstrated ability to perform all cytology procedures in accordance with specifications set by the department head.
Bachelor's degree in science or related fields or graduated from a committee on allied health education and accreditation (CAHEA) accredited school of cytotechnology or other organization approved by health and human services (HHS);
Or certified in cytotechnology by a certification agency approved by HHS; (e.g., American Society of Clinical Pathologists);

Valid/Current California Cytologist license required.
Ability to accurately describe cytologic conditions and provide appropriate differential diagnoses in writing.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
