Cytologist - Rockville Regional Laboratory
Description: Under indirect supervision, performs interpretative microscopic evaluation for gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens, including fine needle aspiration specimens.
Diagnosis & report final cytology interpretation of normal gynecologic specimens and prepare preliminary interpretation of abnormal gynecological as well as all non-gynecological samples for pathologist's review and final diagnosis. Records and analyzes findings, correlates data and reports results in accordance with accepted practice and compliance requirements.
Performs microscopic examination of cellular specimens to recognize, identify and screen for evidence of morphologic changes. Analyzes and classifies cellular constituents in accordance with established criteria.
Identifies questionable cellular configuration and reviews the patient clinical history to establish preliminary interpretation of abnormal morphological features based upon cellular evidence in conjunction with pertinent cognitive knowledge; reports findings and presents specimen to supervisor and/or pathologist for evaluative diagnosis.
Prepares final reports of gynecological cytology specimens which have been classified as normal or without evidence of cellular abnormalities & presents abnormal gynecological as well as all non-gynecological specimens, including fine needle aspirations to the pathologists for evaluative diagnosis.
Performs cytopreparatory techniques and staining-/ cover slipping procedures ensuring that established techniques are utilized; labels specimens and conforms to the standards of the departmental quality control program.
Enters and retrieves information using the laboratory information system(s) where required.
Performs quality control and quality assurance procedures according to established protocol.
Assures that adequate department supply levels are maintained in a cost effective manner.
Assists supervisor with the training and orientation of new employees and medical staff.
Keep abreast of changing techniques, procedures, interpretive findings associated with cytology through participation in continuing education.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:
Receives, identifies, and accesses all gynecological smears and non-gynecological specimens submitted for cytological evaluation.
Prepares smears from all non-gynecological specimens, such as urine, sputum, and fluids by any or all of the following procedures: centrifugation, filtration, placing desired specimen on glass slides using pipette or applicator stick and immersing slide into fixative or spraying slide with aerosol fixative.
Prepares slides for microscopic evaluation by immersing slides into appropriate stains, rinsing, dehydrating, and clearing agents, mounting slides with specific mounting agent and placing blank coverslip over specimen slides.
Examines all smears for evidence of cancer or other diseased conditions; classifies slides according to established classifications ranging from negative to positive for malignant cells; signs-out all normal slides; refers all abnormal cases to pathologist for further evaluation or decision as to whether biopsy or further cytological study is necessary.
Compiles listings of patients from whom a pathologist has requested follow-up specimens; maintains follow-up file on all atypical cases to determine if cell abnormalities have remained same, been eliminated or intensified; records and compares any surgical findings with cytological findings; reports findings to pathologist.
Maintains records of all work performed in cytology section; orders and maintains adequate supplies; prepares reagents and stains, as needed.
Assists with invasive procedures performed in Radiology and other locations within the hospital (e.g. FNA, FNAB).
Keeps abreast of new cytological methods, advances, and trends through periodicals, internet searches, meetings, and seminars.
Demonstrates sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of specialization.

Under the direction of the Director, the manager oversees departmental operations of the Laboratory. Performs administrative duties including oversight and compliance of point of care testing and affiliated offsite areas.
