Examines and accurately reports on Gynecologic and Non-gynecologic Cytology specimens. This should not exceed state / federal mandated levels. Must be able to interrupt both conventional and liquid based specimens.
Updates and maintains cytology report and slide files.
Assists personnel in Cytology FNA procedures
Has working knowledge of Cytology Information System.
Participates in QA program including but not limited to review of non-correlating cases as well as previously diagnosed cases.
Graduate of approved CT training program
Strong analytical, computer, and communication skills
- ASCP Certified or eligible or New York State Licensure as Cytotechnologist

POSITION SUMMARY: Cytological screening of Non-GYN and GYN cases.
Cytologist will also be present in the operating room to provide onsite adequacy of FNA's, EBUS, and EUS procedures when needed. Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs instruments and lab equipment if possible. Verifies orders from scripts and orders procedures in HIS and LIS.
Assists in clerical duties as needed. Assists in the training of new employees and students. Segregates laboratory wastes according to established policies. Works on special projects as requested by Director.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in Cytotechnology or equivalent
Graduate from an approved School of Cytotechnology
C T certification from ASC P
Five years working experience preferred

The Cytotechnologist performs tests and associated supporting work in the Cytology laboratory for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Hours: Full-time; 8:30am-5pm Monday-Friday with flexibility to cover evenings and occasional weekends.
Successful completion of a 12 month accredited Cytotechnologist program as defined by CLIA 88.
Current Cytotechnologist Certification/Licensure through ASCP or other recognized licensing agency
Gyne screening experience
Demonstrates basic keyboard and computer skills to operate industry specific software used in Anatomic Pathology, Outlook (e-mail and calendar) and MS Word

Clinical Laboratory - Cytology
8:00 am till 4:30 pm
Primarily responsible for microscopic screening for detection of abnormal human cells and organisms, assisting with cytopreparations and Fine Needle Aspiration collections as needed, and computer result/data entry related to test orders and reporting. Will maintain a thorough knowledge of conditions appropriate to laboratory test performance, including specimen collection, transport preservation, processing, staining, screening, computer proficiency, specimen storage/disposal, and filing of slides/requisitions/QA materials.
Will develop and maintain a high standard of operation and will act a resource person for new employees. The Cytotechnologist will report directly to the Cytology Supervisor and Pathologist in charge of the Cytology Division.
Must meet the Cytotechnologist requirements defined by DHHS in the Clinical Laboratory improvements Amendments of 1988 and any subsequent requirements
Must possess ASCP (CT) certification or be eligible to sit for the exam

2+ years of experience in Cytology Lab setting
Stains, mounts, and studies human body cells to detect evidence of cancer and other pathological conditions, following established standards and practices.
Receives cytology specimens sent to the laboratory and plans the optimum method of preparation to process specimens.
Assists physicians with sampling/preparation of fine needle aspirations.
Records all test results in the laboratory log book or record.
Stains and cover slips slides and examines human body cells to detect evidence of cancer or other disease conditions.
Classifies slides, records classification, and presents slides with unusual cell structures to pathologist for further examination. Compiles listing of patients for follow up analysis of specimens.
Participates in tumor cell research.
Maintains required records, reports, and statistics as directed.
Maintains good relations with medical staff, and other departments, as well as clients that use cytology services; notifies laboratory director of problems encountered in dealing with physicians, nurses, clients, or other personnel.
To effectively fulfill the requirements of this position a candidate must have:
Post-high school vocational/specialized training in an approved school of Cytotechnology. (Bachelor's degree preferred).
Candidate must be CT(ASCP, HEW) registered.
State of Florida license required.

JOB FUNCTIONS (INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO)
Receives and processes specimens such as cervical and vaginal smears, sputum, body cavity effusions, peritoneal exudates, bronchial, esophageal, gastric, duodenal and colonic brushings and washings
Performs advanced technical procedures such as density gradient preparations for purification of cell populations, preparation for immunocytochemistry staining and special stains for pneumocystic organisms
Stains aspiration preparations rapidly and triage specimens procured by fine needle aspirations
Screens and analyzes all specimen preparations including those procured by fine needle aspiration making decisions on which cases are negative, suspicious or cancerous and are to be reviewed by the pathologist
Bachelor's Degree in a basic science
Graduate from a school of Exfoliative Cytology approved by the CAHEA (Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation)
Cytotechnologists registered before August 1988 did not need a Bachelor's Degree, only needed two years of college level courses with emphasis in basic sciences
Registry-eligible Cytotechnologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP)
Performs routine and specialized cytology procedures for the diagnosis of disease. Incumbent performs standard cytology procedures and specialized procedures such as fine needle aspirate immediate examinations, instructs and coordinates training of personnel, provides work direction and coordination of technical activities, including cytopreparation, quality assurance activities, and maintaining state-of-the-art cytology expertise and procedures.
A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent is required. Current CA license and ASCP Cytotechnologist certification.
YEARS OF RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE
Experience in preparation and evaluation of both gynecological and non- gynecological specimens. Experience in assisting in Fine Needle Aspiration including preparation of slides, evaluation of cells, and specimen adequacy.
