Minimum Education and Experience:Graduation from high school or GED and completion of NC basic law enforcement training (BLET). Must meet standards set by the North Carolina Sheriff's Standards and Training Division. All applicants must successfully pass pre-employment physical fitness testing and standardized reading comprehension test as conducted by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.
Possession of a valid N.C. driver's license.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Patrols an assigned area of the County, answers complaints and requests for assistance, investigates crimes and disturbances; interviews witnesses, questions suspects, gathers and preserves evidence, makes arrests, testifies in court.
Serves various types of civil papers; explains briefly the meaning of papers being served; conducts sale of personal and real property at public auction; ensures proper amount of money is collected.
Opens and closes courts at designated times; maintains order in the courtroom; assists defendants in completing affidavits; swears defendants in; seats jury in place when selected; escorts trial jury to jury room when directed by judge; assists and escorts grand jury.
Prepares papers for and assists in the transportation of prisoners; escorts prisoners to court and maintains custody there; escorts defendants to clerk's office to pay fines; prepares the necessary papers for defendants ordered into custody by the courts, obtains release orders, searches prisoners and logs property, records arrests.
Cooperates with law enforcement personnel of other governmental agencies in making investigations and arrests.
Transports prisoners, mental patients, and intoxicated persons to institutions for confinement or treatment; provides transportation in certain emergencies.
Provides protective escort; maintains order at public gatherings.
May operate speed detection devices or breath analyzer.
Prepares and maintains daily reports concerning criminal activity; prepares related reports as requested.
Assists in the preparation of crime prevention programs; develops contacts among local community organizations and businesses; conducts seminars.
Performs related work as needed.
Deputy Sheriff Cadet - Unclassified
Candidates must possess 38 semester (57 quarter) college units at the time of application to qualify. Applications without the required number of units completed will be rejected.
Candidates that meet the employment standards will be invited to schedule the California P.O.S.T. Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) written exam.
We accept California PELLET B written exam "T-scores" from other agencies with a "T-score of 48 or higher, if the test has been taken within a year of the date you submit your job application. It is the applicant's responsibility to attach proof of the written exam results to the job application. The T-score results must be on an agency letterhead where the test was administered and list the type of test, test date and the test results.
We do not accept other test scores in lieu of the California PELLETB examination.
A Deputy Sheriff Cadet enters training to join the ranks of Deputy Sheriffs who, under supervision, perform active law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property, the investigation of crimes and apprehension of law violators, the service of civil process issued by court, and perform a variety of technical law enforcement tasks.
After passing the exam and screening processes, candidates are eligible to be hired as Deputy Sheriff Cadets and attend the Basic Peace Officer Academy training program as a trainee.
Agility Examination: Prior to appointment as a cadet, each candidate must pass an agility test as part of the examination process. The agility test consists of four timed events: solid fence climb, 99-yard obstacle course, drag a 165-lb bag for 32 feet, 500-yard run.
When hired, Deputy Sheriff Cadets enter a 26-week Basic Peace Officer Academy training program. Benefits include medical, dental, and life insurance programs. Your status as trainee pursuant to the Fair Labor Standard Act does not entitle you to overtime or holiday pay while attending the Academy.
After Academy graduation, Cadets are eligible to be sworn in as regular Deputy Sheriffs at the start of the following pay period, and be considered probationary employees of the Sheriff's Office.
A 5% salary increase is given for satisfactory job performance six months after appointment as a Deputy Sheriff at Step 1.
Newly appointed Deputy Sheriffs must successfully complete an 18-month probationary period during which they will be required to complete a training program under the supervision of a training officer. The County supplies all safety equipment, as provided by law.
Advanced in-service training is available at the department level and in cooperation with local schools, state and national agencies. Regular County policy on tuition reimbursement applies to Deputy Sheriffs.
Upon graduation from the POST Academy, it is a condition of employment that newly appointed Deputy Sheriffs must sign a payroll deduction authorization form providing for deduction of union membership dues or an equivalent service fee. A thirty (30) calendar day cancelation period is provided.

Candidates must possess and clearly specify on their application the following:
Graduation from high school or possession of a General Education Development (G.E.D.) Certificate and the completion of 38 college semester units (57 quarter units) at the time of application.
Applicants who have passed their 20th birthday may submit an application but cannot be appointed until they have reached their 21st birthday.
Possession of a valid California Driver's License (indicate your expiration month/year) prior to appointment and an acceptable driving record that will qualify for a County driving permit. Must be able to pass a complete background investigation including fingerprints and a search of local, state and national files for criminal history.
Deputy Sheriffs are required to maintain a certificate of CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) and first-aid training.
Candidates eliminated on the basis of the medical or psychological examinations may not reapply for one year.

Under close supervision, attends an approved Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) basic police academy to be trained to perform law enforcement service and does other work as required.
This is an at-will position. This is a non-sworn trainee level classification in the Sheriff's Office and is distinguished from the next higher level of Deputy Sheriff by being a non-sworn position with no peace officer powers. Incumbents in this class attend a police academy for basic training. Failure to graduate or to meet the Sheriff's Office standards is cause for release from this position. Upon successful completion of the basic academy, incumbents are expected to promote to Deputy Sheriff. Compliance with Government Code:
In accordance with California Government Code, Section 1031, each employee shall meet the following minimum standards:
Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Any permanent resident alien shall be disqualified from holding a position if his or her application for citizenship is denied.
Be at least 18 years of age.
Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record. In addition, a classifiable set of fingerprints shall be furnished to the Department of Justice and to the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
Be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer. For purposes of this section, a medical examination, including psychological screening, shall be required prior to appointment.
Criminal History and Background Check:
The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors' Resolution No. 82-602, Personnel Policies and Procedures B-5, and applicable federal and state laws. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidate's ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information, the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.
The County may also conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. The background check may include personal and professional reference checks, credit history checks, Social Security Number verification, professional license/registration verification, military service information and driving history. Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection process. In obtaining such information, the County will comply with applicable consent and disclosure practices in the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act.
The background check, including Computerized Voice Stress Analyzer (CVSA) examination, and psychological and physical examinations shall be conducted according to P.O.S.T. specifications. Pursuant to CA Government Code, Section 1029, the conviction of a felony is grounds for disqualification from an appointment except if the individual has been granted a full and unconditional pardon for the felony.
Possession of a valid California driver license, Class C or higher, is required prior to appointment to this class. Failure to maintain a valid license may constitute cause for personnel action. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Employees in this class who, as a part of their regularly assigned duties are required to operate a motor vehicle may be enrolled in the DMV Pull Notice Program.

Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 20–50 pounds occasionally, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, fine dexterity and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and office equipment. Subject to standing, walking, jogging, running, sitting, repetitive motion, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, balancing, client/customer contact, squatting to perform the essential functions. Subject to stressful environments, exposure to excessive heat and cold (outdoor conditions) and client and customer contact for extended periods of time. Subject to contact with communicable diseases, radiation, hazardous waste, human fecal matter and foul odors. Job may involve danger due to contact with criminals and suspects as well as high speed driving.

SPECIAL ADA PHYSICAL STATEMENT:
Vision: Must have sufficient vision without glasses to defend self and others, and perform mandatory life safety functions. Dual vision is required. All officers are required to take and pass vision tests each year. Vision must be correctable to 20/20 or better with uncorrected vision of 20/200 or better. Corrected visual acuity should be at least 20/20 (both eyes) and 20/40 (each eye). For applicants who have completed refractive surgery to correct vision, the operating physician must complete a Corrected Vision Surgical Form.
Hearing: Must have normal hearing in both ears. Hearing sensitivity thresholds are within 25 dB measured at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000Hz and 3000Hz averaged together. Deputy Sheriff II - Extra Help (Boat Patrol Unit)
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office is conducting this recruitment to establish an extra help eligible list. Extra Help assignments will not exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year. CalPERS Retired Annuitant hours will not exceed 960 hours per fiscal year.
The current vacancy is in the Sheriff's Office Boating Unit. This is a seasonal, sworn position assigned to the El Dorado County waterways, normally from April through September each year. Incumbents will be assigned to both the West Slope and Tahoe Basin and are expected to learn and perform the full range of duties required.
The ideal candidate will possess the ability to enforce boating and other laws, ordinances, rules and regulations fairly and impartially; possess the ability to operate a power boat in a safe manner; and will be knowledgeable of boating laws and boating safety.
To evaluate applications, thorough responses to supplemental questions are required.
