To include the understanding, principles and applications of basic Blanking Tools, Forming Tools and Assembly Tools. Assists Journeyman & Master Toolmakers with steel tooling component preparations.
High school diploma or equivalent.

Has a good applicable understanding of basic shop math including fractions and decimal equivalents
Understands general shop and equipment application for basic machining operations.
Able to effectively drill/tap and ream die blocks.
Includes some assembly and mounting of basic single operation tooling
Learn the procedures for threading on a Lathe
Able to validate machined component accuracies using digitizer and/or optical comparator.
Able to produce simple tools (pointed and three sided) using tool/cutter grinder.

Hoffer Plastics is seeking a Tool & Die Maker Apprentice who is looking for a growth oriented opportunity! The Tool & Die Maker Apprentice will have the opportunity to further their hands-on training and education in the trade as part of a DOL Tool and Die Apprentice program. They will work and gain necessary skills required to perform mold repair and modifications as directed to meet customer specifications.

Learn and stay current with modern advances in technology pertinent to the tool and mold trade.
Assist with mold repair and modification
Learn to analyze mold modifications to achieve customer demand or productivity demands to include original designs and ideas to be built and installed in the mold.
Assist in planning repair procedures material selection.
Learn to develop shrinkage and temperature allowances so that very delicate mechanisms function and maintain relative position between different sections and halves of the mold under high temperature molding conditions.
Ability to grind complex forms to very close tolerances.
Assist with mold set up in the molding plant
Ability to complete jobs quickly and efficiently with minimal errors.
Maintain safe work area in neat and orderly manner
High school degree or equivalent required, college level classes in tool, die and or mold making or related field is preferred.
2+ years of experience required, including basic knowledge of tool, die and/or mold function and repair
Prior experience with two or more tool room functions including but not limited to CNC, EDM, jig grinding, machining, basic blueprint reading etc.
Must be able to lift 55 lbs and stand/walk for entire shift (10 hours)
Proficient in Microsoft Office Products. Experience with CAD; Solidworks and/or Autocad experience is preferred.

All hands on training will be provided by a certified Journeyman.
All Apprentice candidates may be required to pass an ACCUPLACER Exam (Math and Reading/English).
This examination will be given and administered by Gaston College.
The applicants that score a minimum 75 (Math score) and a minimum 166 (Reading/English score) will receive an interview from the Joint Apprenticeship Committee.
Will be required to attend formal class room training in tool & die related skills. All educational requirements must be completed within a four year, 8000 hour apprenticeship period.
All employees in this program will be on probation for a period of 2000 hours. Performance will be reviewed by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee.
Operate all Tool & Die Equipment
Duties will include maintaining, repair and build dies, jigs, fixtures and detailed tooling components.
Install and repair die tooling, working with Progressive Stamping Presses
A high school diploma (or equivalent) required

Ability to trouble-shoot probable causes of defective parts pertaining to tool & die repairs

Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance
Troubleshooting – determining causes of operating errors and deciding the resolution

Responsibilities & Qualifications
The Tool & Die Maker will be responsible for all aspects of die maintenance, including training, quality, safety and service. The Tool and Die Maker will be responsible for servicing, troubleshooting and problem-solving tooling issues. This candidate needs to be able to surface grind and perform machine set-up to maintain tooling. They may be assigned to a specific shift or group of employees, as well as, a specific process or group of processes within their department.
Primary contact for the assigned team/process for basic technical or routine questions providing technical assistance and/or training when necessary.
Provides training to personnel regarding standard operating procedures and processing techniques.
Ensures job order and appropriate production process is being followed.
Assists in resource allocation with management and other members of the leadership team.
Assists in the resolution of production process issues (work flow, rework, first piece inspection, etc.)
Initiates, implements and leads process improvement projects within team.

This is 2nd Shift position and requires a Journeyman's Card. Plan, layout and perform required bench and machine operations to construct, alter and repair intricately designed and constructed tools, dies, fixtures, cavity mold dies, gauges where a high degree of skill and extensive knowledge of plastic mold tooling practice and metal tooling practice application is required. Work from complicated drawings, specifications or concepts.
Use a wide variety of precision instruments for exacting measurements. Lay out work and plan machining and bench procedures. Perform difficult machining operations requiring complicated setups which may involve improvising of tooling and machines for adaptations beyond the normal range in capacities of available equipment.
Sets up, program, and operates a variety of CNC mills, CNC EDM's and related CAD equipment machine tools to perform precision machining operations. Perform critical bench and assembly operations to fit, align, calibrate, adjust, assemble and finish work. Assume responsibility for quality workmanship and dimensional accuracy of assigned work.

Tool & Die Maker Journeyman
Plan and construct a wide variety of tools, dies, fixtures and gauges to very close tolerances, or construct more complex units where design is available.
Perform development work, layout and difficult tool room machine operations, fitting, timing and adjusting, e.g. combination dies for parts or irregular contour, box type drill jigs with difficult locating or nesting features, ordinary index milling fixtures.
Dismantles and repairs or replaces parts of damaged dies and fixtures, fits and assembles parts, and tests repaired dies for proper operation.
Operates cranes safely to remove and/or relocate dies to specific work stations/equipment.
