R&D Aeronautical Engineer-Modeling/Simulation (Early/Mid-Career)
What Your Job Will Be Like
This position involves exciting flight test applications that require multi-disciplinary teams of Computer, Electrical and Aerospace engineers working together to produce flight-control subsystem solutions. The Navigation Guidance and Control I (NGC) department is seeking additional Aerospace Engineering technical staff members to join project teams responsible for delivering integrated flight control subsystem solutions for hypersonic flight vehicle applications. Successful candidates will provide aerospace engineering talent in the areas of navigation, guidance, and spacecraft dynamic control; and support and contribute to the development and application of six degree of freedom simulations of prototype hypersonic flight test vehicles. Primary duties of this position relate to the development of navigation, guidance, and control algorithms, and/or the development of six degree of freedom simulations for the flight body application.
Sandia develops prototype flight vehicles for various programs. These vehicles are flown periodically to provide proof of principle towards enabling future operational weapon system capabilities for the United States Military. An essential element of these flight test applications is the flight control system comprised of navigation, guidance, and control algorithms.
The NGC group develops flight control software solutions and relies heavily on high-fidelity simulation codes to design, develop, and test prototype flight software products. These simulations are used throughout the development lifecycle and ultimately provide the key enabling test methodology for verification candidate flight software is ready for actual flight testing. We are seeking additional staff that can support development of the flight algorithms, the simulation codes, or both.
The foundation of the simulation codes is element models of the environment and the flight vehicle subsystems. The Mod/Sim team in 05426 develops and maintains the element models and simulation framework which is applied at the NGC enterprise level across all flight test programs.
The successful applicant will work collaboratively with the NGC flight controls team which collectively develop and prove-out the flight control system solution for each demonstration flight as it occurs. Work is currently underway to support multiple upcoming planned flight tests which scheduled over the course of the next several years. These flight tests will require a significant level of Mod/Sim development and application, as well as development and maturation of real time flight control software. In parallel with those efforts, we are deeply integrated as National Team Members in advanced-technology spiral development activities. Most of these efforts also heavily rely on Mod/Sim to scope and analyze requirements and conceptual design solutions within this category of future challenges.
Longer term, you will grow into leadership positions in the NGC department involving similar activities for other systems and sponsored activities. We are experiencing explosive growth of interest by various new potential sponsors. Various Military organizations are seeking to demonstrate the current technologies we have already successfully demonstrated and continue to mature for our OSD customer. This interest will undoubtedly translate into a need for additional Mod/Sim codes for these system variants and a corresponding need for staff talent and leadership to meet these needs.
Qualifications We Require
Your educational credentials include an undergraduate and advanced (Master's or PhD) degree in Aerospace Engineering, or either Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or Physics with an aerospace emphasis; OR a Bachelor's in relevant discipline and 4 or more years of relevant experience.
You have demonstrated expertise in the development and application of Equations of Motion for complex dynamical systems; OR have experience with algorithm development involving inertial and GPS navigation systems, and/or guidance algorithms; and/or non-linear state-based control system implementations.
You possess proficiency in knowledge in fundamental aerodynamics
You have experience with the capabilities, use, and application of Mathworks Matlab and Simulink®
Your skillset includes a working knowledge of object-oriented programming techniques and applications experience with either C/C++, or the Java programming languages
The capability to communicate technical design and status information with high competence
The ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance

The Navigation Guidance and Control (NGC) Department 5426 provides technology solutions and support to both Offensive and Defensive Military Systems development projects within the Integrated Military Systems Program at Sandia. Hardware and software technologies are developed, integrated, and tested to provide flight control solutions for missiles and hypersonic reentry platforms. Typically, these systems support the Missile Defense Agency, Army, Navy, and other Department of Defense Agencies. Our applications cover a broad spectrum of applications; from advanced aerodynamically controlled vehicles dropped from aircraft, to maneuvering hypersonic warheads, to ballistic missile systems. Candidate will be responsible for testing and developing data structures to assure accurate testing of Design and Support of the production and flight test fluid conveyance routing and installation, Electrical Wire Harness Installation and Equipment Installation and structural design. Verify the aerosource tool will support shop floor, flight line, and off-site aircraft build and operations.
Will support validation that aerosource will allow for data management in the areas of creating layouts, creating new drawings and revising existing drawings using CATIA V5 to support aircraft fluid systems installations, harness installations and equipment installations. Will work production floor support from receipt of problem, coordination of answer to release of engineering change. Designs, develops, and tests a variety of power plants, aircraft, missiles, and parts, taking into consideration the most efficient use of the natural laws affecting flight. Establishes structural specifications, performs stress analysis, and conducts performance tests.
Prior F-16 design experience is desired but, not required. Past work experience using CATIA V4 and F-16 EBOM system (MPRSII) is highly desired.
Design expereience sought after covers systems installation and equipment installation however, airframe design experience (primary and secondary struncture) is also acceptable. Past F-22 design experience is desired.
