Field Geological Engineer- Trainee
Description of Work
Engineer Trainees start with an entry-level rate of $48,208 and are eligible to receive salary adjustments with satisfactory work evaluations. Upon completion of the program, the trainee is eligible for transfer to a Transportation Engineer I position at a salary of $55,534.
Salary Grade: GN13 Salary Range: $48,051 - $81,686
The primary purpose of the Field Geological Engineer position is to develop geotechnical subsurface plans by evaluating and interpreting subsurface conditions on assigned tasks or routine projects. This position compiles field data on boring logs and other notes while supervising 2 to 3 engineering technicians in performing complex geotechnical testing and sampling. The Field Geological Engineer is responsible for continuous evaluation of ever changing subsurface conditions so as to ensure the proper extent of testing by field technicians and incorporating the information into concise and accurate field notes, logs, maps and sketches. The Field Geological Engineer performs quality control and quality assurance for Private Engineering Firm field data collection and geotechnical investigation practices. This position also assists with preparing Request For Proposals and in-house cost estimates.

Knowledge of the principles and methods of geology and geotechnical engineering as they pertain to subsurface investigations for highway construction and facilities.
Demonstrated ability to recognize man-made and geologic formations, including areas of special geotechnical interest during subsurface investigations, and to be able to locate and use technical reports and papers, and interpret geotechnical data.
Demonstrated ability to efficiently schedule and plan geotechnical field investigations, conduct drilling observation, field reconnaissance, and post drilling inspections.
Demonstrated ability to using programs such as gINT, Microstation, ArcGIS, Excel, and Word to create geotechnical subsurface inventory reports, prepare Requests for Proposals, In-house cost estimates and the review of consultant work and invoices
Demonstrated communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees within the office, other NCDOT employees, employees of other state agencies, and federal and local governments, consultants, contractors, and the general public.
Minimum registration as a Geologist In Training (GIT) or an Engineer Intern (EI) in the state of North Carolina is preferred.
State owned vehicles will be used in carrying out the duties of this position; therefore a valid North Carolina Driver's License is preferred.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification:
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

General Statement of Duties
The geological sciences department at Salem State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position beginning September 2019. We seek a field geologist with expertise in earth materials, mineralogy, and petrology who is committed to collaborative undergraduate teaching and research.
Our department has a strong commitment to the inclusion and engagement of our growing population of diverse students. We seek candidates who will successfully serve as mentors and role models for students belonging to groups that are traditionally underrepresented in geological sciences. Teaching assignments will include: mineralogy/petrology/earth materials for majors; summer field courses in Montana and/or New England; introductory general education courses in the geosciences; upper-level applied geoscience and major elective courses in the candidate's area of expertise; and advising senior research.

Duties and Responsibilities
Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract. Duties include teaching, advising, scholarship and contributions to continuously improve the department and university.
The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The position is subject to available funding.
An earned doctorate in geological sciences. ABD will be considered if scheduled to complete the doctorate by June 30, 2019. Demonstrated experience in field geology, tectonics, mineralogy, and igneous/metamorphic petrology; and previous teaching experience is also required.
Industry experience in the applied fields of geological sciences; the desire and ability to develop an externally funded, undergraduate-friendly research program; experience with and passion for teaching undergraduate students; experience with undergraduate research; record of scholarly research in the geological sciences; and experience and/or interest in New England geology.

Perform design and drafting services for internal and external customers focused on Engineered Wood Products (EWP) and/or Truss Design used for customer quotes, order material take offs, and manufacturing.
