The Integrated Engineering and Design Group (IE&DG) in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has multiple openings for highly qualified Mechanical Designers. The design/drafting group within IE&DG provides a "central drafting" function supporting a wide variety of customers and projects. Primary support would be in the Space Science and Security Program within the Global Security Directorate. Secondary support would include Physical and Life Science, (PLS), Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI), Global Security (GS), accelerator technologies, high-energy physics, Energy, National Ignition Facility (NIF), and others . Under minimal supervision, the designer will provide advanced drafting and design support for mechanical apparatus, equipment, assemblies, components, facilities, utilities and systems. You will work from and contribute to design concepts. You will develop, interpret, and translate concepts into design layouts while solving complex technical problems and exercising regular decision-making skills to establish techniques and procedures. Because of the vast and varying types of work we are involved with, this position will require the Mechanical Designer to have the ability to be flexible, working with various groups/projects that require design assistance.
This position may require the successful candidate have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.
Conceptualize, develop, and complete detailed designs of hardware for spacecraft and for other various mechanical applications that address requirements and constraints; translate these solutions into detailed layout, fabrication, and assembly drawings.
Incorporate advanced knowledge of 3D CAD modeling of design concepts using SolidWorks CAD software.
Develop detailed fabrication, specifications, and documentation for all designs.
Contribute to innovative design concepts for a variety of mechanical components and systems.
Work independently on small projects and/or contribute to large projects as a team member.
Perform basic calculations; analyze cost effectiveness of design, schedule, and materials.
Work with physicists, engineers, and other designers to understand multiple project requirements; identify and independently or jointly resolve problems and assure completion of design/drafting responsibilities on schedule.
Interact productively with vendors, customers, and other associates outside the work unit.
Maintain documentation in a configuration management system.
Provide regular progress report to lead.

Controls Design Drafter
The Controls Designer/Drafter (CD) is responsible for the design, layout, and subsequent drafting packages for combustion control systems with an emphasis on electrical/instrumentation design. Duties include participating in turnover meetings, coordination and discussion with Controls Engineers/Project Engineers, efficient schedule management of tasking, and delivering finished control system packages for engineering review.
The Rapid Execution group specializes in delivering quality OEM equipment packages to both domestic and international customers in short lead times. Project portfolios can include various complex systems that must be delivered in critical windows to keep customers operational. Order complexity and available delivery varies, as well as day to day operations during execution. The CD will interact closely with internal Project, Controls, and Applications engineering teams during the project lifecycle. Once an order is released to the execution team, the CD will take the job turnover package with relevant notes from Project Engineering and Controls Engineering to generate an initial draft of the combustion control system. Tasking will be given directly from Controls Engineers as well as the Controls Engineering Manager; Project Engineering may be involved in various tasking dependent on scheduling and complexity of efforts. Once design is complete and finalized for release, additional work may be required throughout project lifecycle based on various factors including scope creep, change orders, standardization, etc.
Our customers rely on proactive efforts and communication as most often they are dealing with equipment requirements that are a critical path with direct impact to their revenue stream. This position enables the CD to function in a role that is professionally fulfilling and keeps them engaged in execution throughout the project lifecycle. Design Drafter Intern
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION:
The Design Drafter Intern is responsible for assisting on an implementation project for transferring over Engineering Design documentation. The documentation includes drawings from 2D and 3D CAD software, and paperwork generated through various other computer programs. The Drafter will create, revise, and/or maintain designs, layouts, drawings, and documentation required for product lines associated with the implementation project. Product lines contain both standard and custom designs with high engineering content.
Major Areas of Accountability
Must be an enthusiastic self starter, able to organize and pursue broad objectives, and have the ability to manage multiple, changing priorities.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, on technical and issues. Demonstrated sense of urgency.
Computer literate, with knowledge of current operating systems and software.
Determine project schedules to complete projects in required time.
Perform other activities related to the ones above as required by the Leader, Manager of Engineering or Director of Engineering
Create and maintain standards, designs, drawings, and specifications for quotations, products, and aftermarket. Responsible for record keeping of same. Resolve production problems and render technical and process assistance to shop.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Academic progress towards 2 years technical college degree, 2 years college pre-engineering degree, Drafting Certificate or equivalent
0 - 7 years experience building upon the Detail and Layout Drafter
Knowledge and understanding of engineering operating systems within the department and understanding of how engineering interfaces with other departments.
Necessary present knowledge of current operating systems and software common to business applications (SolidWorks 2016, AutoCAD 2012, Microsoft Office Products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project).
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing both internally & with customers
