DESCRIPTION Under direction, the Marine Technician will be expected to perform the following at sea: install our XBT data collection system, collect expendable (XBT) and expendable temperature, depth profiles and underway data from commercial container ships, bulkers and tankers; diagnose and repair any failures that arise. Board ships in U.S. or foreign ports and utilizing an automatic launching system, sample around the clock from port to port. Aid public relations efforts by describing scientific objectives to interested crew members and assist crew with computer or electronic equipment. Lend technical assistance to ancillary scientific programs - e.g. installation and maintenance of meteorological sensors, water sample collection, etc. Conduct ARGO float and surface drifter deployments. Under direction, the incumbent will be expected to perform the following while ashore: help in organizing supplies and equipment in the laboratory. Assist in keeping equipment and probe inventories and coordinate shipping and loading of XBT's and ARGO floats. Assist in quality control of XBT data and assist in archiving XBT data from cruises. Meet ships in foreign ports to assist in the logistics of ARGO float deployments. * Must be flexible and available to work variable hours 50% - 100% of the time based on department needs. * Must be able to spend long periods at sea on board ships and able to work frequent overtime. QUALIFICATIONS * Proven ability to work at sea for prolonged and frequent periods with a minimum of one year cumulative experience working at sea. * Demonstrated knowledge of electronics and electronic troubleshooting. * experience with the functioning of expendable bathythermograph systems (XBT). * Proven experience in organization of the laboratory including maintaining inventory. * Demonstrated familiarity with maintaining and upgrading MS Windows computer systems. * Excellent interpersonal skills in order to gain acceptance on board a wide variety of commercial vessels as a non-interfering member of the ship's party. * Should be familiar with shipboard work and daily routines. SPECIAL CONDITIONS * Must be willing to spend long periods at sea on board ships and able to work frequent overtime. * Must have valid Passport allowing for foreign travel.
