The Used Fuel Management department within INL's Nuclear Science & Technology (NS&T) directorate is seeking a skilled technical professional with proven leadership ability to fill the position of Senior Spent Fuel Packaging Analyst.
The individual in this role will lead specific projects for the used fuel management program. The position requires in-depth knowledge of spent nuclear fuel and nuclear materials with a specific focus on the design and certification of packages to support transportation and storage of these materials. Project and Program management experience and strong leadership skills is highly preferred. A broad understanding of the different engineering disciplines required to certify a transportation package is required.
In addition, an understanding of spent fuel facilities (e.g., independent spent fuel storage installations, spent fuel pools, canister/cask handling procedures) and technologies (e.g., canister and cask design system design, canister and cask closure options, drying technologies, repair/mitigation alternatives) is highly desirable. The individual will be expected to contribute expertise to and lead/organize a broad range of spent fuel related projects, including but not limited to: DOE's Micro-reactor program, DOE-NE’s Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition program, DOE-EM’s Technology Development activities, and industry/vendor collaborations. Specifically, the individual will be a key contributor in the evaluation of package designs for a broad range of nuclear applications, such as Versatile Test Reactor spent fuel, fresh and operated microreactors, and high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) for a range of advanced nuclear reactors.
The selected candidate will publish work in various customer-required reports as well as peer-reviewed journal publications. In addition, involvement in the preparation, peer review, and delivery of program plans, oral presentations, and other activities related to INL spent fuel programs and projects will be expected. The candidate is expected to work effectively both independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. The individual will provide direction to and may receive direction from other team members and peers and provide input in a constructive manner, even under pressures and tight deadlines.
