Editor News Job Description Sample
Who You Are:
You are an experienced and skilled writer with at least four years of editorial experience at a large-scale national publication (print or digital, or, ideally both) or a high-performing niche title of national acclaim. You are a natural and nuanced storyteller, with a keen interest in the events unfolding in the world today.
You have written and edited stories about current events at all lengths and at a high level. You must be capable of working fast and carefully (as we cover events in real time) but also able to develop more complicated narratives over longer periods of time. This is a combined writing and editing role, and as such your writing will have both voice and flair, and you will be skilled at editing tight and short pieces that positively sing.
Your Next Challenge:
FOTO covers world events but that can range from the devastation wrought by a fast-moving flood to a strange parade in Siberia to the anniversary of an iconic music festival. The editor will possess a curiosity about news, world events, history, and culture and how all of the above shapes popular thought.
We're seeking an editor who can look around corners and predict how the news will play out. You will also have an intuitive sense of what readers/searchers of current events stories will want to know about. You will have a gift for story ideation as well as the well-honed ability to write snappy, clear, effective headlines and other display type.
The ability to "own" a story – from ideation to publication—is absolutely essential. While this editor/writer will focus on current events, we are not looking for a politics editor.
What You'll Need:
Because we are a visually driven site, the editor must be visually sophisticated and have a sense of visual storytelling, and must be able to identify impactful and affecting photographs. You'll have a nuanced understanding of issue relating to church and state, of legal issues (rights of publicity, libel, etc.), as well as a sophisticated understanding of fairness, objectivity, sourcing, etc.
Our team is small and we work cooperatively in a passionate but casual environment, so you must be able to work well with others, taking and passing batons as needed. Ideally, you would have some experience managing others.
