This position will perform maintenance, installation, repair, and troubleshooting work involved with electrical distribution systems in relationship to the level of Apprentice training. Electrical work may be performed in a number of areas including heating, refrigeration, motors, fire alarms, and generator equipment. Work involves technical application of electrical principles. Work will be on various military installations.
Installs, services, and repairs lighting fixtures, electrical panels, outlets, and wiring.
Operates power hand tools and other specialized electrical equipment.
Installs, repairs, and services specialized electrical equipment and machinery.
Constructs and maintains service equipment.
Reads electrical circuit diagrams.
Transfers primary power from one power source to another.
Installs conductors, splices cable, builds terminations, and does necessary hook-ups for primary power lines.
Sets poles, strings overhead lines, and does overhead line maintenance.
Lays underground conduit for electrical lines and installs low voltage electric lines and conduits for telephone systems.
Performs other related work as required.
There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this position.
Education and/or Experience:
- Apprentice level wireman in a commercial, industrial, or facilities operating setting required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of electrical theory and methods, materials, tools, equipment, and systems used in the electrical trade required.
Thorough knowledge of NEC 2008 and regulations pertaining to the electrical trade required.
Inspection of, identification, and knowledge of all electrical distribution systems (24-12K volts) required.
Knowledge of methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment required.
Knowledge of safety precautions to be observed in the maintenance and installation of electronic and mechanical equipment required.
Ability to complete forklift operation, lock out tag out, fall arrest, confined space, MSDS, asbestos and lead identification, ladder safety, emergency evacuation, OSHA, and respirator training and certifications required.
Must demonstrate a good attitude and ability to work as a member of a team.
Position requires self-motivation and the ability to work effectively under a minimum of supervision.
Must be able to multi-task efficiently, work in a fast paced environment on multiple projects, and have a strong attention for detail.
Must be able to pass a background check to get on a military base.

WGBH's Physical Plant Department is responsible for providing a physical environment that is conducive to the varied needs of the Foundation's staff and the diverse products they produce. Our primary responsibilities are the allocation, maintenance and upkeep of WGBH's physical space. Physical Plant also provides security, parking, mailroom, office services, and self-performs some construction projects as well as an onsite cafeteria.
The Electrician Apprentice will spend 90% of the time working under the supervision of the licensed electrician which includes the following line voltage items: wiring new equipment, replacing electric motors, replacing frequency drives, installing outlets, replacing lighting transformers, wiring cubicles.
Other low voltage work will be: maintaining/repairing the fire alarm system, installing and pushing down data connections, wiring building controls, installing fiber optic cable, install coaxial cable, installing electric door locks, installing security equipment.
The other 10% of the time will be performing building related duties:
To perform incidental building maintenance, including set up for events, small department moves, reconfiguring cubicles.
Work together in small groups to complete small tenant improvements projects.
Respond to emergency calls during non-working hours, snow removal, equipment failure, power failures,
Will be require to work flexible hours for: quarterly fire alarm testing, annual elevator testing, events
Other duties as assigned.

The Apprentice Electrician works directly under the supervision of and assists a qualified Journeyman Electrician and will be responsible for electrical repairs, and maintaining electrical systems at aggregate and asphalt plants. As a result of participation in this apprenticeship program the individual will become familiar with motor control, NEC Code, PLC's, and gain experience with low and medium voltage.
The individual will gain knowledge of electronics and strong knowledge of Federal, state, and local electrical codes, electrical theory, motor control. This individual must be mechanically inclined and have the ability to trouble shoot electrical problems.
Tasks associated with the job include but are not limited the following:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform highly diversified duties to install and maintain production machines and plant facility's electrical equipment.
Plan, layout, install and repair a wide variety of complex electrical equipment including automatic machine and process controls, control centers and panels, relays, circuit breakers, electronic controls, tape actuated controls and other equipment involving tube or transistor circuits.
Diagnose problems, replace or repair parts, detect and replace defective control modules, test and make adjustments.
Perform regular preventive maintenance on machines and plant facilities including air compressors, nitrogen lines, and lighting systems.
Perform a variety of plumbing maintenance and carpentry functions including building of carts and layout boards without prints.
Use a variety of hand and power tools, electric meters and materials handling equipment in performing duties.
Must be capable of wiring new offices.
Detect faulty operations, defective material and report these and any unusual situations to proper supervision.
Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit, using tools, such as hacksaw, pipe threader, and conduit bender.
Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
Applicants must be physically able to perform the work of the trade. Lifting: raising or lowering an object from one level to another 25-50 lbs (objects may weigh up to 100lbs)
Climbing: ascending or descending objects usually with hands/feet; e.g. stairs, ladders, using a man lift.
Subject to varying and unpredictable situations, such as working at elevation and confined spaces, temperature changes – variations in temperature from extremes of heat and cold weather.
Must be a high school graduate or the equivalent.
One full year (2 semesters) of high school algebra with a minimum grade of "C," or the equivalent or one semester of college algebra with a minimum grade of "C" or the equivalent is preferred but not required for the position.
Applicant must have a valid California Driver's License and may be required to drive a Company service truck. Air and ground travel will be required to all West Region locations for daily site visits or for extended periods generally less than one week and occasionally to other Vulcan divisions.
Applicant must be able to travel approximately 50% of the time.The apprentice will be required to attend and successfully complete a five year apprenticeship program that includes a classroom setting during the week on their own time.
