Powerhouse Technician/Ammonia & Refrigeration
Power House Engineers provide quality problem-solving skills and execute the upkeep and repairs that pertain to the plant’s utilizes and operating equipment. They coordinate preventative maintenance and assess emergency maintenance as needed. Maintenance employees must involve themselves in the identification of defects while partnering with production line management in rectifying potential problems as they arise. They must be able to openly communicate potential problems to the Maintenance and Production Line Management whenever they are unable to prevent or correct difficulties in the plant utilities and/or machinery. Power House Engineers could perform, but not limited to, one or more of the following duties:
Keep area clean and orderly.
Coordinate all procedures related to a shutdown of the plant or emergency shutdown of individual pieces of facility equipment or machinery.
Provide quality troubleshooting and coordinate repairs as needed.
Provide upkeep and preventative maintenance to utilities, plant facility, and machinery as needed.
Organize and coordinate work and demonstrate control of ammonia, steam, glycol, air, and water systems.
Perform maintenance to refrigeration system in accordance with Process Safety Management guidelines.
Maintain records on the preventative maintenance program for all systems.
Perform necessary line changeovers, start-ups, and shutdowns.
Perform job in a safe and efficient manner as directed by company procedures.
Keep and maintain any record or statistical data as needed.
Perform any other duties as assigned by Maintenance Management. Powerhouse Position Description:
Safely and efficiently operates, repairs, and maintains equipment associated with the powerhouse operations in a complex manufacturing facility.
- Promotes safety and housekeeping throughout the facility.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Operates and maintains boilers, boiler controls and boiler drying and air filtration equipment, and moisture separators and their drain systems.
Lubricates compressed air systems.
Performs laboratory water tests and other water chemistry tests as necessary.
Safely and efficiently operates the powerhouse equipment. Such as heat transfer and combustion systems to meet OSHA and other safety requirements.
Operates equipment to meet EPA and other environmental regulations.
Enters test results and equipment operational data into spreadsheets and data collection systems and analyze the data for trends and report out as needed.

Strong knowledge of electrical theory, medium voltage switchgear and have extensive medium voltage experience is a mandatory requirement. DUTIES (Including but not limited to):
Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, design, installation, and configuration of electrical power systems:
Correctly identify voltages up to 35KV.
Maintain configuration management to ensure compliance of the system
Redline drawings, engineering documentation and other technical specifications
As necessary, provide input and support for the design, installation, and upgrade of the medium voltage electrical control systems.
Execute assignments to support Facilities, and/or Engineering projects.
Develop and/or revise job plans while looking for ways to improve equipment reliability and troubleshooting is performed in an attempt to make those practices more efficient.
Provide support and training to peers to improve their abilities and increase their technical knowledge
Maintain medium voltage switchgear, breakers, transfer switches, air & line switches and tools.
Perform equipment inspection prior to and upon return to service switchgear, breakers, transfer switches and review associated documentation.
Attend and actively participates in initiatives to support the business.
Prepares and assists other technicians, managers and planner/schedulers in preparing labor/material estimates.
Assists supervision with the assigning, scheduling and prioritization of work order requests using maintenance management systems.
Makes recommendations and prepares orders for spare parts, additional stock room items, tools, etc.
Consults with supervision and engineers on problem resolution/troubleshooting. Keeps supervision informed of problem issues. Education:
Associate’s Degree or higher – OR – Journeyman electrician, certification card from an accredited apprenticeship program and a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a medium voltage 35KV environment with hands on experience – OR – Military, with electrical M.O.S with medium voltage up to 35KV as the main job function Required:
Minimum 5 years’ full-time experience (10,000 hours) industrial or military experience as an Electrical Technician MUST be experienced in medium voltages up to 35KV
Training in OSHA 1910-269 with a strong background in Medium voltages up to 35KV
Experience with hand and power tools, ability to identify and properly use the correct tools and demonstrate extensive knowledge of Arc Flash safety and category of protective clothing is required for each job task up to 35KV. Willing and able to perform general tasks assigned and use multi-meters, high and medium voltage test equipment
Hands-on experience and knowledge of the safe usage of Hot Sticks, Shepard hooks and ground application tools
Willing and able to read and understand single line drawings, technical manuals and perform necessary operations for the installation and/or repair of medium voltage equipment
Experience with Hazardous Energy Control a must. Knowledge and adherence to Merck & Co., Inc. safety Procedure 37 is a requirement
